RB25 into S13 conversion problem

Hi everyone. Im posting this on behalf of my mate who has trouble with the internet at the moment.
He recently put an RB25 into his S13 and then he has followed this manual for the wiring conversion http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/s13faq/RB25-S13_Jan_10.pdf
Now last night he tried cranking it over but no luck  it fuels and primes the injectors but the starter is not doing anything. Checked the starter with a battery and it works fine so my guess its something to do with the wiring. However he pointed out that there are only two wires that run to it. As far as he knows the starter gets earthed by the box and the engine but to me its a bit weird as my E36 has a separate earth (big guage) that just bolts to one of the starter bolts.
We going to try that tonight and just will go through the whole wiring again to see if he missed anything. Both of us arent fond of wiring :smash: so we do need step by step instructions.
If anyone has any suggestions please help as I really wana see that beast fire up and Im sure my mate is dieing to hear that thing live.

Does the starter kick if you put a spanner across the terminals on the end of the starter

If no then you have no power to it

If yes then its a prob with the ign wire (the one that powers up when you turn the key to cranking position)

Edit: the starter will earth through the gearbox and engine block, aslong as you have a suitable earth strap or two on the engine.

Take the ign wire off of the starter and use a test light to make sure there is power to the wire, when the key is switched to the crank position

yeah exact same problem i had when i wired in my engine, got all excited about firing it up and all i got was a click.

thought about it for awhile and had forgotten a decent earth to the engine. normally one goes from gearbox bolt - chassis rail - battery negative.

Right, got that tested last night and the starter fires no bother, my mate thinks he could probably missed something or the alarm that was fitted to the s13 is playing funny buggers. So he's gona try and see if that works, if not he said he will just wire up the old start button direct to the starter to give it the pulse which it doesn't seem to get from the ignition.
Will keep posted :)

As far as I'm aware it was a manual but I will double check with my mate. The thing is, when you turn the ignition you can hear the relay click and when you try cranking it, you can hear the relay fire so it's not getting the signal somewhere down the line.

you have connected the signal wire to the starter motor haven't you?
i know it might seem like a dumb question but sometimes you'll miss the basic of things. the single pin connection.

Yea, I'm gona have to get my mate to check it but I think he was going to check that whole part of the harness just to make sure he hasn't missed anything like that. :)
