Reading ratios from rusty diff tag

Had this diff in an e30 I've just bought. It's been welded, any tips on rust removal so I can read the numbers.

Might seem like a silly question, but I obviously don't want to go too harsh and grind the numbers off! was thinking perhaps of some chemical products?

Use maths?
1 turn on input = x turns on output.
turn it 10 times and divide by 10. so if output turns 35 times (or there abouts) you can assume its a 3.45 diff.
save you a few quid too.
Rust remover is expensive. lol.
