Road legal drift car?

Hi I want to start drifting, I've always liked jap cars and I drift a lot on a simulator and I want to see if it translates to real life. So buy a car and do it... I've been looking at cheaper cars like e46's that have already been prepped and I've noticed a lot of them aren't road legal and get trailered. I'd be driving a few hours each way to most tracks so I don't want to get stranded if I can help it. I know drifting is hard on cars, what is the reliability like on an e46 how often do you break things on track. I'm not talking about crashing it into a wall just mechanical failures, wear and tear.
Also can you leave your extra wheels and jack etc out while you're on track without them getting nicked?
