Rollcage.

Who here has one?

if so what did it change about your car?

and if in your road car does the padding to go round the bars protect your un helmeted head enough?

finally how did it affect your insurance?

regarding insurance, its very down to the insurer, I know people who have been refused insurance because of one, and others who had no increase.

Had cages in my last three cars

Skyline and two 86's all had cages.

Skyline and 1st 86 I spent proper money on fitting FIA approved cage padding. After seeing a nasty accident at Silverstone when I was young and influencable (is that a real word?) I have decided not to scrimp on safety. Get yourself good padding, well secured harnesses, and a fire extinguisher so you don't end up like poor old Nicki Lauder!

Some people here suggested some foam from B&Q thats use for pipe insulation. Don't do it peeps!

As for insurance I went through competition car insurance. You need a racing license for this. Mine expired last year and I've not been asked for it so you may be okay with them. Limited road mileage though! Alternatively fit your cage using dzus fasteners and quickly remove it and put it in your pocket if the insurers come round!

I did, but sold the car to Genjuro

It made it look good and me feel safer:D Don't know about improvements in the car because I changed cars waaay too often last season and didn't get to know any of them properly

My cage was clear of my lid, so I had no padding on the cage at all

I had competition car insurance,TPO and it made no difference.

Sorry not to be too much help, but there ya go:)

As Mitch said i now have his old car and the cage is cool. Its a half cage, ie just in the back which i reckon works really well, i'm not sure i'd want it all in the front as well. As far as insurance goes i'm insured with Adrian Flux and its insured as a normal road car, they weren't bothered about the cage.

ah its ok, ive always fancied a cage mainyl cos ive seen a few nasty crashes involving caged up cars and they always seemed to.. well not collapse

when car is done and insurance needs to be got i shall enquire..(get the impression for only car il be laughed at though)

I've fitted a Carbing 6 point double braced single hoop to my MX5, as it kinda needed a bit more than a windscreen. I then had to fit some low profile bucket seats bolted to the floor to get my head well below the cage.

I can still get the hood up, but the seats are uncomfortable for anything more than hour. Next job is a front hoop & window top bracing to give me a full cage.

I have a traders policy so no worries about additional premiums :D

Having been party to some of the results of rollovers, I for one take safety seriously. The risk in this sport is very high so get a cage BEFORE you need one.

i know this may sound daft but it puzzles me why insurers don't like it .. for a street car it is essentially a "cosmetic" modification is it not ? doesn't make the car go faster .. perhaps it makes it stiffer (ooer:D) but other than that i can't see why it doesn't get treated the same as adding a aftermarket kit/wing/wheels etc ? ..

are they for safety or body strength or both :)
also, rougly how much is comp car insurance? what info do you tell them, number of events/practices etc

i heard insurers dont like it, because of head injuries from heads smashing off the bars

someone also mentioned to me, when a cage eventually breaks in a car its much more disastorous than in a car without a cage..? but id imagine with a decent approved cage by the time that eventually does buckle or snap an un caged car would be well and truly mullered

Maybe cos it makes you feel invulnerable and therefore drive with less care? It doesn't, BTW.

Mine was £370 last year, but no good for your car, as it's 3rd party only:( No good really for mine either anymore, as it's cost about 3 grand now, and will be a bit of a pisser if I lose that in a one-er

Fluxy were pretty good to me, i pay £450 including all mods, limited to 5k miles a year and its 3rd party fire and theft. They did make me fit an imobiliser but i wasn't that bothered about that.

more worried about wrecking the car on track, can i get it insured for the track?

On the classic policy from HIC for the FC its fully comp, also get non competitive track cover thrown in!
