Running a drift car on road with no mechanical knowledge

Hey all,

I’m very tempted to get some sort of tuned Japanese import (soarer, skyline, jzx90, 200sx) as a second car for use perhaps twice a month at the weekend.

The question I have is whether I’m asking for trouble if I have no clue as to how to maintain it. I live in London and apart from having to pay £12.50 ULEZ charge just to take it out, I’m wondering if there’s any other things that make this a really stupid idea?

Are there any good garages around london that specialise in 90’s Japanese turbo cars that would be a one stop shop for maintenance and sorting out any problems?

thanks!

I would hard skip this
If you can't do stuff yourself things will get very expensive very soon
Stuff will break, rust will arrise, problems will come

If you don't have any knowledge I would suggest googleling first and talk to a mate etc of yours how effort it takes to keep 1 in good running condition

Apart from the money it also takes quite a big effort to bring it to the condition you would want it

And even then if you don't have a place to work on it or can store it, but have the know how I would pass
Unless you find it really worth it

Honestly, a 350z sounds pretty ideal for you.

They're ULEZ exempt, good skidders, not a lot to go wrong with a big dumb V6 and parts and guides are readily avaliable.

Hey there,
In many ways you're actually FAR better of doing this than trying to maintain it yourself. It really all depends on how deep your pockets are. Your average driveway DIY tuner has very little actual knowledge of how to do things well or build and maintain a performance car properly. It's why a vast proportion of the jap cars in the UK are absolute abominations and deathtraps. They think they do, but the gap between a properly, professionally maintained vehicle and a home brew Colin DIY job is VAST.

I think it's a totally achievable goal. The difficulty is finding someone in the UK that's local and has the capacity, service, professionalism and experience to maintain it with you. Due to the age of these cars (and the likelihood of them being maintained on a budget) you're going to have to invest to solve the differed maintenance that's not been done on these vehicles after you've bought it. Then it;s just a case of keeping on top of what needs doing and continuing to improve/bring it up to snuff.

If you've got a decent budget, some disposable income and a passion and willingness to invest in your car then I say go for it.

Yeah look, without much experience with mechanical workings or imports in general i would advise against it unless you want to learn the hard way. Youve got to remember alot of those cars with RBs or JZ are 20-30 years old now and arent always in the best shape despite what the seller will tell you.
