RX8, I did it to prove they drift.

I've always wanted a rotary.
After having some terrible luck with cars ( I broke a 1jz FFS ) I decided now was the time to take the plunge.

I wanted to go back to having a relatively inexpensive drift car. After building my 1uz Stagea and then buying a breaking a 1jz soarer, it was time to give the wallet a break.
Firstly, I'm not made of money, I earn a relatively poor wage compared to the countries average. But I paint cars, and that's kinda cool. But due to family issues I decided to go with a cheaper car, any how I digress.

I bought this RX8 after some umming and arring, debating with myself whether it would be a good idea, from a good friend of a friend, Chris.

I paid him £1200, it's done 79k miles, it has Tein Coilovers, and I'm assured a recent rebuild, but no paperwork. So it's a gamble, I'll touch back on this later.

The plan was always to keep it simple ! I promise.

One of my local tracks Buxton raceway was holding one of it's monthly drift weekenders, better get the seat in and diff welded !

What a fucking nightmare.
12 hours to remove, weld and refit the diff due to stubborn as fuck rusty shit bolts, im veering wildly off topic again.

On the plus side, with the car up on the 2 poster I could see evidence of the alleged engine rebuild; sealer oozed out around the sump pan, a few fuel hoses not clipped back in on the bulkhead etc, and a very clean looking motor ! Good news!

Unfortunately it's first day wasn't brilliant, managed a few laps until a violent spin made for Inspector gadget esq smoke clouds from both tailpipes, now following my recent form. I wrongly assumed it was terminal.
Turns out due to my over zealous maintenance I'd had the oil topped up to the full mark.
The early Renesis doesn't like this under track conditions and sucks it up into the inlet. It's a common problem known as an oil burp.
I fitted a catch tank and it has been perfect since !
One pic from it's first day

A point worth noting, the rx8 owners club is full of midlife crisis men who frown upon this sort of thing.

Fast forwards a few weeks.
Three Sisters Race Track in Wigan who hold drift days every month, and it's only 6 miles from my house.

The car was BRILLIANT.
Didn't skip a beat all day!

Worth mentioning a few mods I'd find before 3 Sisters.

I bought a big box of stuff from my Minty.Fresh buddy Jites, this included ;
Black Halo Racing Ignition coils with MSD leads
Steering wheel boss
Brand new spark plugs
RX8Performance.com solid engine mounts

All fitted just to keep things ticking along nicely.

A colleague and friend Sam Spoon Owen has started his own business venture, The Charge Garage (Oldham Manchester ) for rollcage design and building and any custom fabrication work.

Bring the RX8 down he said, we'll make you a cage he said !

What was a nice road car with full interior went to this in a few hours work

Sam knew about the troubles I was having and sorted me out a VERY good price.

I'm fussy though, I wanted the cage as close to the body as possible so it wouldn't compromise room inside the passenger cell, as my plan was to cut up and refit as much of the interior as I could.

The cage was built to full BDC/MSA Regulations, do it once do it right.

After a sketchy drive back to the bodyshop, me and my buddy Jimmy set to painting the cage and refitting the interior

Worth noting, I don't plan to compete. But with more and more tracks asking for rollcages for tandem drifting it seemed a worth while investment.

When I bought the car it was fitted with a full TOYOsport exhaust, engine to tailpipes.
It was alright, but it weren't very loud !

So I chopped out the two rear silencers, invariably making it a straight piped system.
It was actually the loudest thing I've ever heard, so for fear of going to jail I thought id best modify it to install a rear silencer.

I've never really liked twin exhausts. Seems all a bit too Audi TT for me.

Alan from Wizards of Lock sorted me out some hubs, as the stock steering lock is WOEFUL.

Then it's Buxton time again!
This time the car was much better. Running on 16s and 18s all day in 20degree weather, all engine parameters measured via the cars OBD2 port connected wirelessly to my iPhone, after some of the longer runs the temps were getting to 100ish degrees, cooling is sonething I must look at in the future !

With the fitment of the new exhaust I decided to try my hand at fabrication, I wanted to make a rear diffuser !

Not sure if I like it though. Gets battered to fuck and my car isn't even low. Which is upsetting as the Teins are on full Low.
Another thing for the future !

Videos of legit skids to come in next post !

This is about where I'm upto with it at the moment.
Here's some videos. First two are 3 Sisters with stock Toyo exhaust. Last one is Buxton with Home made exhaust taking out a child for a passenger lap because her dad has an FD3S and loves the rotary.
And I must agree, I too love this stupid triangle engine.

Comments / criticisms / ideas all welcome !

Looking good!

I'll be following this

Depending on how big your catch can is, it might not contain a full oil burp.
I've had a few on the road and it dropped the level massively!

Been running mine as a Daily/Fastroad for over two years now

3k miles into RX8 ownership
Not a single problem to report.

Debated selling this but I just couldn't.
Lip kit, skirts, wheels and a respray next on the cards !

What hp model is it?

So all it's had done is upgraded ignition & fresh plugs, engine mounts, coilovers, welded diff, modded knuckles, cage and exhaust

Interesting to hear if it has any issues in the future

always thought these cars are so cheap and look to be ready for drifting with the right small things done to the car, pretty awesome how you are actually doing it to prove it can be done.

It's a 231hp model. Although Mazda over exaggerated them massively I expect it is around 170/180hp.
Yep, even with stock knuckles it drifted perfectly well.
225/40/18s it will pull 3rd in the dry on an 18c day with 50psi.

The ignition and plugs are more a matter of reliability rather than an upgrade for performance.

I like everything about this, except the exhaust!!!

If I ever manage to scrape enough cash together, I will buy a budget RX8 for track fun. I miss having a rotary in my life :(

Yeah they are around 180ish at the wheels (for a healthy 231)

interesting about the stock knuckles, I've heard reports that the standard lock is a bit poor for drifting, I'd like more lock just for street driving tbh!

First of all let me share it with you that your not the only lunatic trying to drift an 8.

So did you try without a welded diff, I didn't have much success on my first day, but I'm unsure I'd its down to setup or inexperience.

I'm running a stock 4 port, including stock diff, was on 225/40/18s, bit felt like I was always stuck between it won't let go, or it did let go and spun instantly.

That being said I was trying to run in second gear, maybe I need to try it in third, see if that improves my success, right now just trying to figure whether to weld the diff before the next go or try without.

I agree with what you mean about rx8club, you ask a question about how to disable dsc, you just get 30 people questioning why you want to kill yourself and disable a safety feature mazda put in there for you.
