s13 versuses s14

The s14 seems to be a better drifting car, as far as i can tell, mainly coz of the viscous rear diff but there are loads of s13's out there. if you have a s13 do you have to buy an aftermarket LSD?

Facelift s13s come with a viscous lsd. S14 diff will also fit on the s13 with a bit of part swopping.

S14 Has SR (nuff said) stronger gearbox internals, better viscous diff (kouki S13 has viscous but it was barely worth having over the open diff in the zenki)

Like mitto says the S14 is easier to learn in, as everything happens a bit slower and they feel less twitchy especially compared to stripped out S13

S13 shell feels lighter and more nimble
S13 has less electronic bolox to strip out (abs airbags etc)
Also S13 has been around longer and has the Silvia variations and was marketed in many more guises and therefore there are more off the shelf parts available, but the S14 is catching up, it is even easy to get a nismo power brace for one now so I think its just a matter of personal opinion.
If you are building a drift car its what you put into it in terms of time and money and individual taste that makes it what it is i guess...

Hmm, personally I dont think theres anything different about the late S13 and S14 VLSD apart from the gearing.

S13s seem to understeer a touch more but thats easily sortable.

Both engines have their flaws. CAs are perfectly good engines but are getting old and knackered and knock out big end bearings but have a better valve train design which is more suitable for high revs than the SR.

Being old S13s are suffering from bad rust on the sills and nearly always on the hatch. S14s are getting on a bit now as well and some are getting rusty as well.

S13s have more room for tyres in the back.:D

Suspension wise they are near enough the same.

S14s have better front brakes but a fookin awful handbrake.

I second most of that... But Nissan Bible (workshop manual) seems to think S14 VLSD is improved from the S13, even tho they are nigh on identical in design... The S13 VLSD always felt shite to me tho... and the S14 one is acceptable, if not great, as they heat up a bit quick. It might just be cos I am used to Toyota plate LSD.

Despite my bitching about the CA the CA DET Head design is very nice,
But I think they do rattle out the big ends early, (usually 100-130K) even if they are seemingly well maintained. The SR works less hard though, its a lazier engine with more torque. And better big end design :D Gotta love the chain drive too but more of a pain in the ass to work on...

I bet a Tuned N/A CA (Like CA16DE/CA18DE from Sunny ZX Coupe) would go well. Can you say '4AG'? !!!

Even a standard CA16DE goes pretty well. Revvy as fook and kept up (Sunny ZX Coupe) with my mates 8V Astra GTE.

If a CA head could be glued to an SR block it would be near perfik.:)

Oh, where does it mention about the diff improvements in the manual? Ive read both S13 and S14 a fair bit but never seen anything about this.

I think its in the S14 suppliment, has a little drawing of what is inside the viscous centre etc. I'll do my own rendition when I get back home (fkn copyright) and post up what it says. I cant remember exactly but I know the differences are very small. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just a different fluid...

And yeah I used to have 1.8 zx coupe... was good engine but the car torque steer worse than anything else FWD NA I ever drove!

Have you got the diff supplement on disc? Ive got the supplement but for some reason the PD section is missing. Dont suppose you fancy emailing it me?:)

Except mine, which will be a nightmare to carry tyres in once the cage is in, In comparison to just launching them in the back like the old 200:D

Ah well, at least I got the best of both on mine

I think the S14 is easier to get the back end out (happened a few times on the road), but not too sure about drifting as I never did it in mine. I prefered the power delivery on the 14, which is why I want an SR20, unless I can get a reasonably priced "built" CA

oh yeah, I need the S14 manual back asap! people have noticed, theres a shit-fan interface!
