Anyone found a good way of firming up the 14's handbrake ? its pish even with stamping on the footbrake to chuck the weight froward :wack:

Nope, just push down the clutch and pull it hard and its pretty good. Pressing the footbrake at the same time makes it much easier to lock the rears though.

all S14 handbrakes are shit, lee if you think yours is good, you haven't driven a car with a good handbrake ;) 32gtst, S13 etc all have far superior handbrakes..

Lenagh: I've gone to the extreme of fitting a hydraulic handbrake, and have a set of rear R33GTR brakes waiting to go in..

Maybe I havnt tried a good one, but mine locks it up with very little effort so I believe it to be good. I certainly know what a poor one is like from the RX7 and the S14 one works well.

funnily enough I was about to ask what the upgrade path was for the rears :) everyone seems to just do the fronts on the SXOC which as we know isn't the whole picture !

I will just try a simple disk and pad upgrade. If there is a grippy as feck pad for the rear that might help like mintex's ? I'm on black stuff at the mo.

i thought the problem with the 200 was a springy link (or something equally techie) so no matter how hard you pull, it doesn't do much.

if the spring was bypassed, wouldn't this make things a lot better?

cavalier handbrake rocks.

Vauxhall Carlton handbrake also rocks ;)
doesn't matter how slowly you pull it, it just locks super quick and super sharp. Feels like it's electrical servo driven or something.......

the s13, senator and cavalier handbrakes all work on a seperate drum brake inside the hub, hence very "lockable". The s14, however, uses a cable to the rear calipers, hence very difficult to lock.

Maybe look into transfering the rear hubs from an s13, but keep the s14 5 stud drive flange? Would need to have a set of s13 discs drilled to 5 stud though.....

Yeah 300 zxs have the same hand brake setup as the S13,
Ive got z32 rear discs on my s13 and they need no mods at all to the handbrake system,

So that might be a solution to the s14's apparent problems, but Im sure it wouldnt be that easy otherwise someone would have done it!!!!!! :wack:

300zx wheels are a direct fitment for the s14 so the only thin I can see stopping someone is the will to do it ?

We have rear discs on the s13 for the footbrake but the handbrake utilises a small drum inside of the disc, its the same system as a 300zx,

Wow, why do you guys get drum handbrakes on your S13s, mine uses the calipers to clamp down the pads... Works alright

are you sure about that? I know we're talking 240sx's which did have some strange changes to the 200's silvias and 180's, but changing the handbrake mechanism would seem a little bizzare..

Indeed it would seem bizzare... And it seems to hold true. I know it because I had a hell of a time un-seizing the rear calipers. Every time I put on the handbrake, it would move the slider into a kind of divot and then stay wedged there.

I remeber driving home once from a not too distant place and found out when I got back that the rears were stuck on... That was not a pleasent smell at all :wack:
