s14 over heating or temp guage issue... help ?

Hi Guys,

I have built an s14 basically from scratch and it sounds and drives perfect, however when I first started it in my garage the water temp gauge would jump up and drop down rapidly it was all over the place.

By the first drive it seemed to have sorted its self out.


That’s when I noticed it had gone of the chart it was that hot…
It gets hot very quick and its seems very strange.

The fan is on a switch.


Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Fan would only kick in if you were not moving at any decent rate of knots so i doubt its that.
Most likely either the thermostat is stuck closed, the water pump isnt running or you have a collent leak and have lost it all or least some of it. If you dont have braided hoses to the turbo then it could well be one of them.

First check coolant level. If all is good run the engine and when needle gets up to half way ish feel radiator pipes, cant remember which side without seeing it, but if both are not warm, hotish, them your thermostat is not opening.
Ofcourse with it being a new build are you sure it is overheating for definate and not an electrical issue? feel the engine with your hand im sure you will know
