Sr20 turbo choice - new market

Hi all,

So as im sure everyone knows the market is flooded with turbo options, technology is forever developing and its just putting more and more options out there!

Im currently building a fiery DET formmy s14a and would just like some feedback on my current thoughts for the route im lookin to go!

So the cars use - its one of 3 14s i own and the planned use is a lovely usable street car that can upset newer stuff, and id also like to do a odd grip track day in it

Engine spec - fresh build
Minor head port and polish
Hks step 2 264s,
brian crower springs,
Cosworth 1.1 headgasket
Arp head bolts
86.5 wossners
Manley rods
Arp rods bolts
Acl race bearings
New oil pump
Will be on a standalone - currently leaning towards link, however a emu is an option

Goals - 400bhp anything more is a bonus, but the big thing is i want it mega responsive! The absolute minimal lag

Now my turbo thoughts!

I spoke to Wayne at auto extreme (sound guy great help) and he said the gtx3071r gen 2 was good option, however the new g25-550/660 were great but no real sr feedback!

Ive done a lot of digging and i can't seem to find a great deal of written use on these turbos, theres a review type video comparing the 550 variant to a 3071 and i know mitto runs a 660, thats it!

I did contact mitto and asked what sorta response he had but he wasnt able to give a full answer!

So i need some feedback here, anyone running a g25 and abke to let me kmow when they hit boost and engine spec would be amazing

Or if theres a better option out there!

I need to sort a turbo before i purchase a proper exhaust manifold to get the flange correct!

Cheers

GTX30 is overkill if you only want 400, can push way more.

If it's just 400 you want then the smaller Gen 2 GTX 2876R or 2860R will get you there and with better spool than a larger turbo.
Of course if you change your mind and want 450-500 or more they won't work, but you've said response is key so run the smallest turbo possible.

Sorry just thought wasnt clear im after 400 at the wheels!

I was gonna just pop the 2871r back on but know that runs out at 400ish (at the fly to i believe?)

Hence now widening my search

So are you staying with Garrett or looking at a BW EFR?
You'll need the larger exhaust housing on the G550 to get anywhere near the stated output, but they've been pretty impressive on alot of other engines.

Whats the exhaust manifold? off the shelf item or being custom made?

I'd be looking at an EFR, fastest spooling turbos out there thanks to the titanium aluminide turbine wheel. BW are the only ones who currently do turbine wheels in this material (as far as I know) - lighter than inconel so this is where their impressive spool-up characteristic comes from. Personally wouldn't bother with Garrett, they've long undersized their turbine wheels in relation to the comp wheel.

Did you ever settle on a turbo? I am going through the same decision right now with an identical engine build.

You need to be specific about your power goal.

You don't want to spec a 500bhp capable turbo, then only run it at 400.
You don't want to sped a 400bhp capable turbo when you want much more power.

I'd like to start with 400-500 to start but be able to grow if I decide to upgrade heads. Sounds like the best thing to do would be to use the best turbo for my current use case with easier access to swap it out in the future into something bigger if needed (thinking v band + top mount).

Yea there's little option for such a wide power request.

The best you could do is something like a G25-550 and change the exhaust housing.
