Streeeeetching tyres over 17x9 rims?

I know all about what'll work with my measly 13, 14 and 15's, but have recently acquired an E34 with pimp 17x9 (rear) BBS's.

I've already killed the 265/40's (!!!) on them and want to fit as narrow (and as cheap) rubber on as possible.

So how narrow can I go on a 9J? I was thinking maybe a 235 on a 40 profile? Narrower would be better, but there ain't a lot of sidewall to stretch on a 40.

I have 235 40 on the front wheels of the RX7 and its fine. Infact I think the other rims are 10" with the same size but im sure someone will be along shortly with a proper answer.

I run 225 45 or 40's on a 9.5" rim on the back of my bmw and i have no problems

So should be fine as mine are

yup, 225/45/17's on my 17" x 9J and it's not that much of a stretch really. Could definitely get 215 if not 205's on.
We do sometimes need to use a bead blower to get them to seat properly though..... (we did for all 6 last weekend  )

Erm, no, Will's cheap would be £5 a tyre.

205, 215, 225, etc should all fit really. 225s on my 8.5s aren't really a stretch at all, I'm putting some 205s on next. :D Correct sizes for the E34 would be 235/45/17 or 225/50/17 or 205/55/17, really, so you've got plenty of sidewall to stretch. 225/45s would be near enough, common and perfect really. Loads of cheapies/freebies in 225/45 knocking about.

And you bought the E34!! Good man, that car's pimp as!! :wack:

what are tyre companies like for stretching tyres over rims like this?? i cant imagine their too happy about stretching tyres over wider rims, must be a bastard to do.....

in japan R33 GTR rims are common fitments for S13's and the like. The GTR rims are 9x17 and I've seen many cars with 215/40 or 45 tyres.

So it can be done with tyres that narrow, so anything above that should be ok

Cheers

depends if they have a bead blaster. it's easy if you have :)

Cheers boys!

Excuse my lack of experience with low profiles. I tend to be more accustomed in finding ways to utilise old Fiesta tyres on AE86's...

£70 is good for new Kumho's, but unfortunately Benjamin is correct, way out of my "budget"...

I feel a pikeying mission is imminent, in search of 225/45 17's or whatever I can get really.

Got brand new 235/45 Avons on the front on an 8J so it'd be rude not to go narrower on the 9J rears...

Hey Will
I got some 235/35/17 that you can have if you come and pick up those halfshafts! (Maybe the profile is a little low to stretch?)
Actually, a friend of mine is going Santapod on Sunday, can give it to him if you want to meet him there?

Sounds good Rikard. Those tyres sound OK too!

What's happening at Pod on Sunday then?

I ran 215's on my Skyline

215/45 mainly on my rears! It's tough getting them on. Mind due I didn't change my own tyres in those days. It's only lately Julian makes me do my own work!

I had new 225/45s put on my GTR rims for the Sileighty.

The fitter actually looked up to make sure it was OK to fit them on a 9J rim and although it wasnt "reccomended", it was "permitted", so Kumho know their stuff too :).

225 is fine. I run them all time :)

Not quite sure....

What profile, but the ORANGE runs 205 width on 10x17" Work rims on the rear. I think they are 45's but not entirely sure.

There ya go!!

See, I knew I was gonna be good at this driftin malarky !!! :D :D :D

I think you will find that the tyres will be the least of my problems once I fire up that nice hemi ;) :wack:
