tappy clakky noise S14 ... erm.. help?

ok so my engine is running, but its making a funny clackky type noise. sounds like a stuck follower, but it sound like a bottom end noise, like big ends :cry: im pretty sure its coming from the top tho. when i rev the car is smooths out, so im guessing follower? big ends obviously get worse as you rev but this improves, so i dunno. the pitch and tap increase with revs.

help me im afraid and dont want to decide what it is :cry: :cry: :cry:
 
the SXOC is awesome. done a search and i do belive it might be the VVT sprocket. anyone in the North West with a datalink thingy to check it? :wave:

you tried the good old 'using a massive screwdriver as a stethoscope' technique to work out where it's coming from?
 
Oh not Matt, hope its not bottom end. Bottom end failures can sound like they come from cylinder head, sound gets transmitted up.
 
I can post you a datalink cable if you're stuck, but it's at home now so it won't be with you till Wednesday......

Was gonna suggest vvt, think the vvt is the cause of alot of strange goings on in the s14. Which is why i think ill throw mine in the bin :)

Right i got the exact same sound about two weeks ago, Certainly intermittant.
any idea where i can get the datascan software from and a datalink.
 
it was but the sound went away. i have an R-Vit and that wasnt showing a VVT fault and i disconnected the VVT solenoid too to check. try that man :thumbs:
 
So you fixed the hydraulic lifter noise and instead put a dent in your quarter and pissed off your neighbours. :worthy: Next time my car makes a funny noise I'll make sure I don't ask you how to fix it. :wack:

i've got that problem on my sr,goes away when you rev it a bit ,Mayur said its a very common problem on s14's
someone else said it was piston slap .....can't see that myself
Mayur is sure its the hydrolic variable cam timing/pulleys .....by fitting a vernia
kit you can get rid of the slack,HKS make them does anyone else know anything about these??
