Chipping it off really is the best way. An old wood chisel and small hammer is good just make sure the chisel isn't razor sharp. Go and do it outside when it's really cold and the tar stuff will be quite brittle. You shouldn't have to use the hammer much. Just use the chisel like a scraper to lift the tar away from the floorpan. It should just break up as it comes off.

The alternative is to use a hot air gun and scraper but that gets very messy and you'll have to remove the last remnants with a solvent which is even worse.

yeah, stay away from heat unless you like messy jobs :( hammer and chisel is the best way, just use the chisel to hit the side of the tar rather than trying to get under it and it'll come off in big chunks, and it won't damage the floor:)

What he said, do it when its cold and it usually becomes easier. My brother recently did it that way to his FC3S. There's only a few little bits where any damage has been done where he's messed up and hit the chisel at the wrong angle.

When its out, Petrol shifts the mess left behind easily.

all of the above is spot on,i tried a short cut after the hard work took its toll, declan told me use a co2 fire ext(black one) freeze the stuff and make it easy only problem was one extinguisher only did one footwell and the local dumps supplies of them had run dry.....so had to revoke back to the hard work :(

You can get stuff in an aerosol that plumbers use to freeze pipes. I' guess that would do the same job but no idea how long it'd last. Good idea using the Co2 fire extinguisher though :smokin:

Yep C02 fire extinguisher will freeze the stuff rock hard. One big mallet & lots of little bits of rock hard tar just fall off. Just don't breathe the C02 it'll kill you !.

Alternatively get the mallet out at 6am on a frosty morning :D

it's one of those bastard jobs where there is no easy way :(
Big bags of ice can help with chipping it off  but there doesn't seem to be any quick and easy solution unfortunately.
If it helps I believe 3 days is the normal timescale for the job in full

Currently half way through doing my FC3S of this nasty task! Small chisel and cold weather does indeed help! A big fookin coat doesnt go a miss either!

Been hard at it today with the good old removal of the sound deadening! Ive found it alot easier beating the crap out of it with a rubber mallet first... it comes off in bigger pieces once you get the chisel under it! Only the front footwells to do now! wooo!

We de'tarred an s13 in a few hours, think there was 3 of us battering it with hammers, chisels, screwdrivers, whatever was lying around really. Best way is to get the chisel/screwdriver in at a very flat angle so it comes off in large chunks, the wee bits get everywhere and are generally a pain in the arse.

Its done!!

Started at 11.00am, finished about 3.30pm! not bad ay :smokin:

I found the tar in the back was pi** easy to get off, it just shattered when i hit it, the floorpan was a bit more of a pain, all i gotta do now is clean off the remnants of the tar with some petrol, and jobs a good un

If the car is quite new sometimes you can peel it off when you apply a little heat.. Sometimes it's just to brittle though..
For alot of the larger area's I used bags of ice. Took fuckin ages, I never want to have to do it again :wack:

I really need to stop mincing and sort this on the Carlton.

Amazing how some people find this so easy, and some soo hard. Guess its down to how well its stuck in each car.

Job for tomorrow methinks :D

does this mod help with handling and control? only joking, its a crappy job and there is no substitute for hard work with a scraper, finish it off with white spirit and a rag, best of luck, enjoy :D

Maybe this is a christmas job as I've just spent too many hours chipping the sound proofing crud off the floor of the car. The best technique I found was to do a bit and then find something else to do and return to the task later.
