Tein HA Woes..

Ok, i got sum shiny Tein HA's on my S13, however the passenger front one has some excess play between piston and shock, basically you can move the wheel back and forth a small amount if you jack the car up. and it makes a knocking sound occasionally when you drive.

Now 1. Is this gonna cause any major problem if i continue to drive the car awhile before i send it back to Tein for Service.

2. Is it possible just to get a new HA replacment ? as i think thyre discontinued now.

Thanks
Si

It definately is the coilover, you can move it from side to side if u take the wheel off, and see the piston moving in its seat in the shock.

Albeit im sure the Driver side ball joint needs replacing too :wack:

How do you mean ? the 2 nuts that tighten togther that determine the ride height ?

If so, no thats all fine, there just seems to be play in the actual piston part going into the shock itself, if u rock it, you can clearly see it move in there :(

I think he means the colla that holds the insert in. I know exactly what you mean. Driving on it will make it worse quickly.

Had this trouble with the fronts of my buddy clubs. I'm getting fresh inserts fitted, when I find a suspention specialist. You could move my wheel back and forth by about 1/2 inch, made the handling a nightmare as it basically makes the castor/camber angles random!

Send 'em back to tein for a rebuild...

Ok, i shall send the offending Shock back to Tein in the NewYear,

Is there anyway to temporarily ease the problem as i have to drive the car in the mean time!

Can i tighten this collar that holds the insert in, to help atall ?

Thanks again
Si

tein will charge you a fortune to fix it! :smash: they tried to charge me £150 for looking at my shocks and posting them back. after they were told to "feck right off" they decided that it was only £50... go figure :wack:

Ahh..Daylight Robbery Matt!

Im guessing the problem i have is gonna actually be repairable ? New insert at a guess.

Ill get intouch with the guys at Tein as soon as their open in the new year.

Take it to a rally/ suspension specialist tell them what its for the can test you spring rates and put a new insert in AFAIK... Bilstien rally inserts are good, What they used on the Winning GP.A AE86. Won't be cheap but from what people tell me of tein they are usually less than interested, and buying a new set of coilovers just cos one is fucked is not nice... I know your pain... I'll keep you posted on finding a place to do it...

Yeah, Cheers Candy Drifter, id be interested to know if i can get it done somewhere else also, incase Tein arent gonna play ball.

Either way i guess its a servicable problem ?

Si

Yeah IMHO fitting different inserts will be more cost effective and little difference from the tein inset in terms of handling quality. I'm not sure how they are on adjustablity tho...

About 8 years ago I had to send a HR back to Tein in Japan for a rebuild, wasn't cheap but they fixed it...

You could try Nitron Racing Systems, I spoke to them a few years ago about rebuilding some HKS Diper Dampers and they were very helpfull

says it all really doesnt it  they were kind enough to offer me an upgrade to thier newest model "flex"... hmmmmmm

im running D2 now, cheaper, more ajustability and easily serviceable

Look at the immaculate roads in Japan then the shit state of the roads here... I wonder why the always break like that Hmmmm.

I spoke to Tein UK about some problems they couldn't have been more helpful, called me back on my mobile and decided that the part i needed was only £6.50  Think it was a guy called Andy i spoke to.

hahahahahahaha, spot the D2 sponsored user!

I'm running D2's too, but only because they were £500 new. one day I'll get something better

well yeah, im backed by D2 and TBH they bust tein balls. besides the fact that tein took the piss when i had a problem. by all accounts tein are very good, but... caz is right, they dont stand up to uk roads/conditions very well.

this is all in my opinion and if tein wanna give me a set-up to prove me wrong...

tough, im D2 baby :p haha

With the D2's, have you any info on setting them up? They have a top adjuster and also a long allen key jobby, which has a settings indicator on it, but can fit in any of six ways. Do you just wind it fully one way and start from the lowest setting?

mitch, righto basically put the alan key in and wind it all the way anti clockwise till it stops. this is the softest setting. take the alan key out and make the marker point to 1. ie. the softest point. its 18 point adjustable so you can turn it clockwise 3 times to reach the hardest point. im set on something like (id have to go check) 13 front and 10 rear. but i have odd spring rates too

how do you mean by top adjuster? where the shock mounts to the seat or the top locking nut?
