I thought I would migrate my experiences from drifting at the Silverstone events over to here...
The circuit...
Can people post comments on...
1. Best drifting line, turn in points.
2. Speeds and gears for each turn.
3. Advice on the transition from 2 - 3 & 4
4. Feinting down the straight between 1 & 2
Obviously people won't want to give away any secrets but it would be nice to share some of the basics.
After my first event there these are my comments.
Just thought I would add what I learnt today.
1st corner:
This corner is hard due to lack of visibility of the exit. My final run I got the confidence and entered in 3rd at about 3/4k. I used a slight flick and lifted off the throttle to start the drift. Balanced the revs until the nose was pointing where I wanted it and then eased in more power to keep the drift going. Another problem I found was when I got more confidence I was exiting faster, this mean't getting setup for turn 2 was much harder. I had to brake, change into 2nd, line up in a very short time. I noticed the more experienced feinted down this section to reduce speed, this looked much better and had the advantage of swinging into the 2nd corner.
2nd corner:
This was quite easy to drift around but to do it well became more complex the more practice I had. I found everytime I was too slow and turned either too late or too early. Turn one seemed to need an earlier turn but there was more room to correct mistakes (at my speeds) turn two however needed a much better line because there was the chance of a transition into 3.
I entered this corner in 2nd and exited in second, sometimes hitting the limiter. I think I could probably do it in 3rd but i'd need a much better line to let me take the speed through. Also leaving the turn in late gave a better chance of still being in a drift on the exit, meaning a transition into 3 was more likely.
3rd corner:
Once it was sideways, it was all about throttle. Getting into a drift was pretty easy, 3rd gear, about 3/4k and nail it with a quick flick. Once it stepped out you could just keep the throttle down and steer the nose into and out of the best line. Idealy i would've had the best line and no steering input would be needed
I ran with Goodyear Eagle F1's on the back. Pirelli P7000's on the front. The F1's had virtually no tread left and seemed great. Once I had the confidence to get into a drift the back end was quite easy to move where I wanted it. At the start I had about 2mm of tread left on both and now about 1mm. I expected much worse, I think the airfield days are far less forgiving.
