I thought I would migrate my experiences from drifting at the Silverstone events over to here...

The circuit...

Can people post comments on...
1. Best drifting line, turn in points.
2. Speeds and gears for each turn.
3. Advice on the transition from 2 - 3 & 4
4. Feinting down the straight between 1 & 2

Obviously people won't want to give away any secrets but it would be nice to share some of the basics.

After my first event there these are my comments.
Just thought I would add what I learnt today.

1st corner:
This corner is hard due to lack of visibility of the exit. My final run I got the confidence and entered in 3rd at about 3/4k. I used a slight flick and lifted off the throttle to start the drift. Balanced the revs until the nose was pointing where I wanted it and then eased in more power to keep the drift going. Another problem I found was when I got more confidence I was exiting faster, this mean't getting setup for turn 2 was much harder. I had to brake, change into 2nd, line up in a very short time. I noticed the more experienced feinted down this section to reduce speed, this looked much better and had the advantage of swinging into the 2nd corner.

2nd corner:
This was quite easy to drift around but to do it well became more complex the more practice I had. I found everytime I was too slow and turned either too late or too early. Turn one seemed to need an earlier turn but there was more room to correct mistakes (at my speeds) turn two however needed a much better line because there was the chance of a transition into 3.

I entered this corner in 2nd and exited in second, sometimes hitting the limiter. I think I could probably do it in 3rd but i'd need a much better line to let me take the speed through. Also leaving the turn in late gave a better chance of still being in a drift on the exit, meaning a transition into 3 was more likely.

3rd corner:
Once it was sideways, it was all about throttle. Getting into a drift was pretty easy, 3rd gear, about 3/4k and nail it with a quick flick. Once it stepped out you could just keep the throttle down and steer the nose into and out of the best line. Idealy i would've had the best line and no steering input would be needed

I ran with Goodyear Eagle F1's on the back. Pirelli P7000's on the front. The F1's had virtually no tread left and seemed great. Once I had the confidence to get into a drift the back end was quite easy to move where I wanted it. At the start I had about 2mm of tread left on both and now about 1mm. I expected much worse, I think the airfield days are far less forgiving.

Having used two different cars then that makes a massive difference to what you can do I find.

EG first bend in the S14 clutch kicking doesnt do anything, but going in on the brakes to swing the back out then powering round works rather well. Conversely the RX7 just washes out if you go in on the brakes, but a nice clutch kick works pretty well.

Turn1: Throttle, thats all I needed as long as it didnt understeer. Turn in, lift off, get it sideways, plant the throttle.

Turn2: Approach in 3rd, shift lock to 2nd, power.

Turn3: Approach in 2nd, turn in a bit earlier than it seems you should, do a funny upwards anti shiftlock :p into 3rd, power all the way round. Hard to get the line right as I tended to slide outwards but I (once) managed to drift nearly all of it with my front wheels on the rumble strip, which was nice.:D

Shiftlocking is a bit shit on your drive train though so I guess I wouldnt really recommend it but it works for me and I dont care.;)

ok so this is only when i works...

go flat out up to 3rd gear, swing wide and clutch like a mofo to step out on the highest angle i can without spinning and without loosing too much speed for the straight.

Hit the straight and let the car step as near to 90 degrees i an can, flick over and hold it on the second flick as long as i dare, right before i flick for the second corner i start braking a little. if you come up short start belting the handbrake to extend the slide. if you get it right you lock up all four wheels trying to slow down on crossover :D oh also, you have to change down to second on the 3rd flick.

use second to power out of the second corner on a low angle, let it swing wider and wider until you run out of puff, then let it step full broadside, flick back over and change to 3rd gear for the final corner. basically keep it nailed and over power to get good smoked.

then que for 3 hours to have another go...

For me its as follows:

Race towards first turn, top of 3rd/start of 4th and turn on the "Suck at Drift" device. Leave device on untill you approach Maggots, upon approaching maggots, turn the device off. Into maggots in 4th and flick into the other corner on the brakes, hit the straight and see how many 3rd gear flicks you can do before a) you hit the wall or b) the marshall bollocks you.

Wait 3 hours, have another go.

PMSL @ Paz :D
Mine changes every run  as I don't really have much of a gameplan. I've found that using more power and less clutch worked miles better for me, but getting 90 degrees is well past the point of no return for me (Matt). Will the Tein tie rods enable me to get further out, or is it my LOFT that's all wrong?

you could do with a better diff in that car mate. after going from the S14a diff in your car to nismo Gt pro in mine i will never be looking back. that will help you hold a high angle. also, just go super fast, that way you hold a lot more forwards momentum, but then, its worse when you do spin :D haha

oh yeah, tie rods will allow you to put on more lock, allowing you to travel even more sideways. that car is a bit of a git tho, its very snappy imho. i would reccomend running large offset rims and VERY streched tyres to make it handle more smoothly. i can give you a hand with getting some bits for it if ya like. pm me and i'll work out the offsets and bits for you. thats as long as you dont mind giving the arches atweak with a hammer :D

I've got tie rods to go on, but can't afford a diff at the moment. I'm running std S14 rims- what sort of offset were you thinking of and how much am I looking at? :D

bt tweak i mean "hammer the shit out of them till they can fit around about a +5 offset" :D i think with the black rims i had on would be nice. look at the spc sheet in my considering selling thread in chat. add 25mm spacers too and it should handle nicely. id go for 215/45 front and 225/45 rear tho

My feeble virginity breaking round went like this:

(After taking advice from experienced D1ers)

Turn one - third gear - turn in (not enough) after losing too much speed. Squeal all the way round with the frotn sliding. Swear a lot

Repeat for all remaining turns in various gears, angles of understeer etc.

Next time Im gonna try harder not to bottle :)
