Total noob question

Just fitted a welded diff to my E36. Now I was expecting 'wheel skip'. However, at slow corners (2nd gear 2.93 diff) around 75 degrees and more I ain't getting wheel skip. I'm getting whole car skip hahaa. Feels like axle tramp when you're on the verge of spinning the back tires but they bounce and grip. Same with slow manouvres, whole car is bouncing.

So. Is this normal? It's on Ebay tat coilovers if that makes a difference. I'm expecting a torrent of abuse which I'm happy to take on the chin ha.

Awesome dude cheers. What a waste of a thread ha. You're answering all my stupid questions about BMW's I appreciate your patience

Just means the back ends pretty loose. If you put solid bushes in so there was no compliance in the system then it would just slip with no bouncing. As you allow movement in the system through old worn bushes it allows everything to move around alot more. So you basically get both sides grip and then the inside one will release causing it to judder.

Ok mate cheers for that I'll get them bought. Locking collars for S-Bodies are readily available so hopefully it'll be same for the E36.

Edit: Would Polybushes do? Can't find any readily available solid ones

Yeah, the solid thing was theoretical to help visualise the situation.

It would probably be fine just to replace with stock bushes. Yours will just be loose and worn because there are 20+ years old. Soo poly bush or whatever will be more than adequate.

Cheers for that. Had a look last night after you'd said and have found Meyle bushes. What bushes would you recommend replacing, ie. what give the best results for effort. This was meant to be a cheap skidder while I built my 200sx but more and more I'm spending time on the BMW. I don't fancy dropping the full rear subframe when I still have that to do on the SX, if you get me?

The rear trailing arm bushes and the diff bushes seem to be the easiest to get to, would these suffice or is a drop the subframe jobbie?

Haha no idea mate, never owned a BMW. Before you break the wallet open have a look under the car and see if anything looks particularly perished or old and worn and go for that first. On my chaser i just replaced the rear arm set because it was cheap enough to get adjustable arms, which obviously come with fresh bushings. But youll need someone with BMW knowledge to give you a hand from here lol

Cheers for the info mate, I'll have a search on ze interwebz for similar questions. I know nothing about them as well as you can see ha.

Perhaps you can answer this ha, save me making a new thread. I previously had a LSD fitted and in the wet just blipping the throttle in 1st or 2nd on a tight roundabout would kick the back end out nicely. Since fitting the welded diff it appears I've actually got more grip? I always thought a welded diff makes for a lively back end? Or could this be another worn bush symptom?

Sounds like it's as maccy described, your subframe bushes are twisting allowing more traction.
Subframe and diff polys should sort it out.
