Triumph spitfire Tallyho skids?

Hi all. dont judge me on this one especially those who believe these cars should be left untouched, curious to see what you guys think.

Triumph spitfires.
After the cappuccino was taken away by someone utterly mental and i doubt he has had the welding done either, id certainly wont buy a rust bucket spitfire, ill make sure of that

Now they weigh a lot of feck all and i know they only have ..well probably half a donkey of power after all the years.
i know the blocks can be taken to around 100bhp with relative ease, but the arguments around 1300 or 1500 we wont get into.

parts are cheap, plentiful and the support is there.

Now its the rear end, its well..a diff on a leaf spring and the famous wibble wobble camber picture is all around the internet.

But realistically, with the right amount of DIY tuning via uprated dampers and springs up front with adjustable height and ride, lowering blocks around an inch and uprated dampers with adjustable ride on the rear. Welded diff of course

decent enough to skid? im certainly not at an ability where ill hop in and instantly go "WELL FOOKIN EEL M9 DIS LEAF SPRING GIMMIE JIP CANT SKIDS M9" .. far from it.

and who knows if it is decent enough, one day, compete....a man can dream.

id love to see one done! i looked at buying one to restore but it was pretty rusty so i didn't bother, finding one with little rust cheap will be the problem

Yea thats the thing, a quick look on the sites, with summer tax added some "restored" examples are around £3 to £5000 which is fine.

be nice to find one that is 100% solid but the paint is a bit pants for a couple of grand, that isnt a issue, i can deal with paint. just not rust..

Ebay, Gumtree etc the usual places

car and classic as well..

Oh theres owners clubs up the wazoo, id get banned from most of em as soon as i say i want to skid one lol

lol that will rip the car in two.

but anyway back to the topic

doable? or is the leaf spring rear setup really gonna be that shite ill die and cause a nuclear holocaust somehow.

also wont buy a rotoflex car as that really wont be any good, its a type of active steering like HICAS but more aids.

Jesus thats brave lol id rather keep with the standard block and maybe go to a GT6 straight 6 in the future.

but thats because i love carbs etc.

You say no leaf springs but is that because you can already drift and it will hold you back.
or do you say no leaf springs because ill end up dead regardless

Fuck all wrong with leak springs normally. That's not an issue.

That transverse leaf oddness a spitfire has would just make it camber in more as it squats, which wont be a big deal I doubt. Fuck all traction will help you tbf.

Sub 800kg, so even with the wanky engines it wont be much/any less underpowered than a 1.6 MX5.

IMO, welder, bucket, stiffer suspension, 60psi in the rear tyres, and it would drift as well as most light low power stuff.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Will look to see if one i purchase has a swing spring or the wibbly wobbly older setup, though if i am going for a 1500 mkiv it should theoretically be a swing spring setup.

One good thing about the spit, around £300 for a set of gaz fully adjustable shocks n front springs
everything is so cheap for the car its great and readily available.

wonder how far these could be taken competition wise, hell, nutters make race cars out of em after all

ive seen kits that convert the rear to shocks and springs.

oh really? well i dont think the leaf springs will be too much of an issue for me at some stage.

maybe after it shoots down a load of germans (bmws) in competition then a conversion might be necessary

there are a few cheap looking around, you wont know if its too cheap until you're standing next to it. if you want one id go take a look, if it does have a few issues they shouldnt be too expensive to put right unless its lots of welding.

My dad had a look at the link, these were his bread n butter when working as a mechanic and he instantly said it would need welding done.

it seems the cars fall into two categories, MKIV wise anyway

sub £1000 - project
£2000 - still a project
£3000-£4000 - Goldylocks car, absolutely mint no rust

and thats what im after, gonna do things right this time unlike the cappuccino...dont want to see a inch of rust.

heres an example of what id be buying

Triumph Spitfire 1500 with Overdrive For Sale (1980) on Car And Classic UK [C631635]
