Just bought a standard low mileage (36'000) s14a and i'm not sure what oil to run the engine on. I haven't been able to find much information and my local garage doesn't seem to know either for some reason. If anyone could help that would be great. It's the SR20DET engine.

Cheers.

Hello
Whaler

I cant till you for sure wot oil but can help some?
iv got a ca1.8det and the factor oil for it is 10w40 but thats not to say yours is? if you go to your local part supplier, ie where you would get your timing belt- bearings etc from they will be able to till you wot the factor oil is if you give them the number plate for the car.
getting back to my factor oil at 10w40, this will be fine for my car! but if you have mods or want better oil temp in my case you would go for 10w60 the only part that will change when it comes to temp the oil can take is the 40to60 part, with me using 60 instead of 40 that oil will take 45 degrees more heat before the oil breaks down and dose bad things to the inside of your engine, im not saying for you to use 10w60 on your car as i dont know wot the factor oil is for your car, i take it, it is 2.0L and mine is 1.8L so there could be a difference? i dont know and would never speculate wot it could or would be.
the 10w part of the oil grade is the thickness of the oil.
hope this helps :)

5w40 is recommended off the top of my head, 10w40 is cheaper.

If money isn't an issue, may as well go for Mobil1 5w40.

As above. 5w40 is what ive always run, and if you know youll be doing an oil swap within a matter of days/2 weeks tops, the halfords cheap stuff is good enough and dirt cheap with a trade card.

If its 5w40 that tills me that the veins in the engine of the sr20 are alot finer and if that is the case id go for 5w60 for the reasons iv already said about on last post, IMO when it comes to oil get the best make you can, you will only safe about £10-20 depending where you buy it,with getting cheap oil it can take a long time or a short time for cheap oil to bite you in the ass, depending on how you drive or how old the engine is, for an extra £10-20 its not worth it!
hope this helps :)
