Wider wheels on mx5??

Was considering getting some nice deep dish wheels for my mx5 and maybe rolling the arches. For looks more than anything else.
The only thing holding me back is the way the car handles now, it feels great, just enough slip from the back, but easy to correct. Well balanced.
My concern is throwing a load of money at the car to make it feel worse, anybody had experience with this?

I can tell you from experience, that fitting something like 8's all round and a proper tyre (195/55/15) will make the car handle 10x better than what you have at the moment. Standard wheels are tiny and great for sticking on the back to kill.

I notice Mint that you suggest 195/55/15s. I tried MiM wheels 15 x 7 et13 with 195/50/15s on my MK1 eunos with relatively low coilovers and it simply ground out on the front inner wheel arch. Is binning off the wheel arch to allow the wheels to fit a done thing?

If your going to fit aftermarket wheels that are distant from the OEM sizes then yes, you will need to adjust your wings to fit. Thats a given mate.
I personally used to run 60 profiles on 14's and 55's on 15's iirc. My car was low aswell and yes it scraped.

OP, Increasing the width and tyre will increase grip.

14x8.5 et-33 iirc.

These were 14's, 8" up front and 8.5 on the rear iirc. 60 profile tyres.

These were 15's. 8 + 8.5" wide, 195/50/15 I think... Or 55? Dam cant recall now..

Not slammed by any American standards, but it was low enough. My mate danny is lower than I was, and hes running 9's on the front.

Sacking off the front inner arches is a must if you're running a car low. Some cars you can get away with just trimming them but on my 5 I just ripped them out as I was in a rush and tired after fitting the coilovers.
I'm running 195/50/15 ET25 7J mim's similar to what you had and theres plenty of room in there after binning the arches. Planning adding 25mm spacers to fill out the arches a bit more and give A arm clearance.

That purple car looks great. I think I'd have to drive a lowered stiffend 5 to get a feel for it , see if its worth the bother. love that look though. this is worth a butchers if you've not seen it before, kind of the direction I'd like to take my 5

I have a set of mim 15x7 with 195/50/15 and my arches havent been touches, im lowered aswell no issues. it all depends on what offset you get and how low you are, personnaly mx5 look rubbish with nice wheel but monster truck high, i dont mean slam it onto chassis rails, lower it first then wheels in my experiance

Agreed. Low, on wide wheels with a fat can is the best look. I've recently bought my mx-5 and it's got new tyres and springs on so i'm reluctant to blow a load of money just yet. Exhaust is looking a bit ropey so that'll be my first mod
