Your thoughts on forums

Hi,
I'm researching forums for a writing project at the moment. Specifically based around cars but would like some thoughts in general too.
I covered the Japspeed Impreza theft a short wile back & was in touch with Team Japspeed; they gave special mention to this forum for the effort put in by forum users to aid the effort to find the car.

That's the good side, yet I know as well that some other sites appear to have many uptight individuals who seem to live on their chosen forum & wait like birds of prey, for any comment to appear where they can rip the poor poster to shreds.
I read with interest the posts re' the Impreza - it was (almost!) exciting reading a near live report of where this car might be. That's the good side. So what're the bad experiences anyone has had as well as good?
Tell me what you think!

one thing you can write about is the explosion of lifestylers on driftworks, fucking place is full of twats posting the most juvenile pointless threads, like the recent "fisting" thread, we could do with more people with better technical knowledge(there are some allready) and more informative threads, rather than show us your wags, and shit.

Its a forum, with freinds, theres differant sections. Its not all about technical help it has to be fun too.

I think it has the correct proprtions of help aswell as fun, there some twats but its a forum certainly one of the best ive been on

the more lifestylers, kroozers, and spotty x box players on a forum will allways lead to it becoming a site where the more serious drivers, car builders etc will shy away from because it all descends into juvenile chitty chat, first posters with 101 pics of their "project", and other tat, fisting, wags, pics of me n me mates on the piss etc etc etc, im not saying driftworks is all like that, but in the long time ive been on here, its got a lot more childish, and full of people who post up like crazy for a few weeks and then when their bored you never see them again, yes there are different sections and i like a lot of stuff thats funny, but it gets tiring when you get chumps with shitbox rx7s that come on here with my new project thread, then within 2 weeks its a for sale thread, cos i took it to bits and dont know how to put it back together.

The bigger a forum gets, you obviously get more extremes in regards to morons posting shit, and cliqueiness as well, those who "have been there since the start" and don't want the exclusivity taken away from it.

But at the same time, a huge forum like this one has so much knowledge floating about, I'm not sure there's many things that haven't been covered before and with a bit of digging, you can probably find the answer to pretty much any related question.

I agree now you've put it like that  I can definatly see where your coming from and agree

Forums are a serious business.

+1 on Lightning being bad for society.

The other bad side of forums hmmm... people that get addicted to it, try to live a 2nd life promoting themselves in a life style with possessions and sharing experiances which they don't actually own, replying to topics in an mundane, almost chat room fashion, trying to gain social leverage to elevate themselves to a position where their "opinion" is unassailable, aggressive idiots.

....there's allot more than just Lighting that's bad on teh intarwebz fawrums.

The bad side is scammers having a big ole target to aim at. Anything else is down to the individual users, if they are weird in real life they will be weird on here too.

The problem with forums is the same problem with the internet. However, it's also the reason people use the internet and you'll never entirely get around that. It's anonymity (this that the right word). People can remain anonymous which means they can troll, speak there mind and act like general retards with hardly any consequences. This leads to the other issues like scam sales etc.

On the plus side, it convenience and interest. There is tonnes of information on this and other forums regarding our motors, drifting information and videos etc. It's a lot easier to come here and do a search to find the information your looking for. Then if you don't find the information, you can ask the question and receive and answer from many people in the know. For me, my mechanical skills are lacking but i'm not an idiot. In the last, 6-8 months ive done more jobs to my car than i ever would have, and a lot of it is thanks to the information found on this forum. Also, like I say its interest, here i find information on things i am interested in. Youtube videos, pics, upcoming events and meets. All awesome and convenient.

The next side of it is friendship, you can make many community and online friends. Then come round to events you put names to faces, it just makes everything better :D

Thats my thoughts anyway :D

Imagine trying to find half the car stuff you use on a forum from say a library. Internet / forums has done loads for spreading knowledge.

Yes you have the retards but they are everywhere.

Might be worth pointing out also that there were a massive amount of cockends in that Japspeed thread who posted up redherring sightings just for fun. Among with the influx of other cocks you'll always get as communities get bigger.

Also you can apparently go to jail now for being mean on the internet.
Sam had better watch his back.

Yes, this is an interesting aspect now. The recent convictions of the riot-friendly dudes on Facebook being a good example. Plus schools now recognise the problem of online bullying.

Agreed, you have to take what you read with a pinch of salt. My feeling was that Japspeed appreciated the high profile this forum (& others) gave the theft - making it more difficult for the thieves to er, 'process' their spoils.
