I thought I’d start a thread for my new project so I can try and keep a track of my progress and also ask some probably stupid questions along the way.
I've been doing drift days in my 1996 BMW E36 328i Coupe for a year now but I've always wanted something Jap. I bought this 1991 Nissan Laurel Medalist Turbo in late December from Japan as a Christmas present and collected it from Newcastle dock at the beginning of the month. Part of the appeal was that the RB20DET and auto box have been replaced by a red top SR20DET and manual box from a 180SX. I know its not to everyone’s taste but I liked the idea of it and it ticked every other box on my “want” list.
I could tell from the photos it wasn’t mint, it’s had a life and its done skids but that’s what I like about it. Its not mint but its useable and full of that “JDM charm”.
Here is the spec I can figure out so far:
Exterior:
Final Konnexion kit
Kouki Rear Lights
Manaray 17x8 and 17x9 wheels
Brakes:
S14 brakes
EBC red stuff front pads & Project Mu rear pads
Unknown handbrake conversion with the usual drift button
5 stud conversion
Interior:
Full C33 bolt in cage
JDM spec single Bride Seat
Greddy water temp gauge (doesn’t work)
Nardi Steering wheel
The worst stereo I’ve ever seen
Engine & Drivetrain:
Red top SR20DET
Aftermarket headgasket (according to the auction sheet)
S14 Turbo (according to the auction sheet)
HKS Actuator
Tubular Manifold & Aftermarket turbo elbow
Full Exhaust System
Blitz pod filter
Front Mount Intercooler
HKS Remote oil filter & oil cooler
Stock ECU
Stock Injectors
Stock MAF
Unknown upgrade fuel pump
Blitz Dual SBC Boost controller
Alloy radiator
Mechanical LSD (works well but clunks like mad so it must be super tight)
Reinforced Clutch (according to the auction sheet)
Suspension:
D-Max coilovers
Loads of aftermarket arms & bushings (haven’t figured out what its got yet)
Solid subframe bushes
My first issue is that on collection the boost controller was turned off so to be careful I drove it home on the stock boost as I didn’t want to wreck it. Since then I've played a bit and the boost controller was set to 1.03 bar. The ECU is stock inside with no labels on the outside either. The injectors are grey which I’m sure are the stock 180SX ones and it’s on a stock MAF but it has an upgraded fuel pump. YAY! I'm not sure how its managing to fuel itself correctly with this extra boost so for now I’ve turned the boost controller down to 0.8 bar until I can find some decent injectors, a Z32 maf and get it booked in for a Nistune upgrade.
The auction photos:
The ship it came in on:
Some pics of it leaving the ship:
The first time I saw it in person at the port:
First wash:
Removed about 11,000 metres of Japanese spec stereo wiring that didn’t go anywhere.
I had to swap the steering wheel for my Nardi since the original wood rim was cracked so badly it had started to flex, the yellow carbon fibre was ripped off the dash immediately, I’ve started to waxoil it, removed the awful Jap spec radio which hardly worked and the HID’s which didn’t work, changed the spark plugs, made a boot carpet, wired in a rear foglight, fixed the brake lights, fixed the indicators, made a new gear lever boot, re-wrapped the handbrake with some tape that wasn’t rancid, fitted a gearknob that wasn’t red, change the handbrake button to a silver one from a red one, refitted the rear seat correctly, removed the fake wood stickers off the dashboard, straightened the exhaust tip out and generally investigated what I’ve bought.
