1991 C33 Laurel Medalist Turbo

With winter hibernation taking place, I've been busy doing a few jobs and fixing a few broken bits that it came from Japan with.

As mentioned previously, the turbo manifold was cracked so I whipped it off for repair but upon closer inspection it was pretty much junk. Every weld was cracked and speaking to the local custom exhaust shop he said he could repair it, but a new one would be cheaper and better.

So insert a new Megan Racing item. Not sure how it’ll hold up but at 1/3 of the price of a Tomei one and with the Driftworks being out of production, I figured I’d give it one a go and if it lasts a couple of years then I haven’t lost anything. The gaskets looked cheap though so I ordered some decent ones from Conceptua Tuning along with new manifold to turbo nuts. The numbers on the turbo highlighted to it being a ball bearing one but it doesn’t move or sound like one so it can’t be. It looks to be in good condition though so that’ll stay for now. Its all back together and runs the same so its mission successful.

My local exhaust shop welded a flexi into the downpipe to try and prevent the pull on the turbo manifold. Exhaust is still a bunch of cobbled together bits from god knows what (probably a mix of R32 and S13 bits) but it does the job for now even though it does look and fit shit.

Fitted a solid steering bush from JDMgarage using a guide on here. Wasn’t too bad to do. No seized bolts but man flu at the time was a major factor in how long it took me to change it.

The bare boot inside was annoying me and even after I resprayed it black then cut some carpet to cover the floor, I still wasn’t happy but I managed to source an original set of boot trims from YAJ via Jesse Streeter. It just neatens the boot up, makes it nicer to put things in and protects all the loom etc for only a small sacrifice of a couple of centimetres of boot space. The boot carpet is still home made though. I didn’t get that with the parts.

I decided the 17” Work S2R’s or the 17” Manaray VR5’s weren’t going to cut it and I had to step up to 18’s. After searching and searching, looking on the Driftworks store and being ready to click buy on some 18x9.5 D9R’s, I saw these Weds Kranze ERM’s on JDMDistro which were cheaper and they just appealed to me. They are 18x8 ET20 and 18x9 ET25. They have some curbing which looks to be the result of careless parking because the rears are spotlessly clean. I'll tidy up for now and think about getting sorted properly another year. I know they aren’t to everyone’s tastes and are a bit blingy but I think the larger saloons suit something a bit more blingy than something sporty. They arrived in the UK on Monday and should be with me in the next week or so.

Now I just need tyres. Was thinking of getting another set of Toyo R1R’s like the Manarays came with but Camskill said there is no UK stock of 225/40/18 R1R’s until March next year and the Yoko AD08R is a better tyre anyway. Ill grab a pair of those for the front and the rear was on Yoko S Drives but I might sling some Toyo T1R’s on which are cheap and cheerful but still grippy.

Once the tyres on I’ll adjust the ride height. I've ran it conservatively high so far and caught the front bumper in a couple of places (including my driveway) but I might just try and be a bit more careful, plan my route better, stay away from bad car parks and try to get it a little bit lower. At least my front bumper is quick release with cable ties so I can remove it easily enough.

I also have a fascination with Advan SA3R’s (note the pics of my Volvo 240 on SA3R’s below at my mates wedding earlier this year) and needing some skid rims, I picked up this pair of 17x9’s off eBay which will be refurbished in some horrendous colour and used as skid rims. Two alone isn’t enough so I’ll have to find some other 17’s as well but these are a start.

More will happen when I have wheels and money...

I'm liking the direction you're going with this bro, keep it up! Wheels are sweet.

Thanks mate! I'm getting sick of working on it and really looking forward to getting out on the track in it. Keep telling myself to not rush things though because hastiness and cutting corners we will only bite me in the long run.

Weds look mega! Right up my street this.

Thanks! I'm going to have to get them refurbed. My attention to detail can't cope with them as they are and whilst they don't have tyres on, I may as well get the outer barrels freshened up properly.

Bee. Trying to hunt down the reason my speedo doesn't work (yes it's petty and doesn't stop skids but it does stop me getting speeding tickets). Its looking like I need am rb20det gearbox speed sensor to go to the C33 cable.

Hopefully once that's done, I'm about there....well other than wheels, tyres and a decent 4 wheel alignment.

Wheels have arrived. I'm looking forward to getting them on the car once they have been refurbished.

by any chance would you be able to help me find C33 parts? im in the US and it is very hard. also, does your right rear window work? my amplifier blew up and i cant indentify the relay inside to repair it. by any chance can you open yours and snap a pic so i can buy the small part i need to fix it instead of finding one over seas?

C33 parts aren't the easiest to find but not impossible. You have to go direct to Japan and look for stuff 90% of the time though and use Yahoo Auctions Japan. I go through Jesse Streeter to get what I need after I've found the parts I need on YAJ. Or use a bit of luck and see if a 4 door Skyline part fits.

Its also handy to join the "Laurel and Cefiro Info & Sales" page on Facebook.

Well I can’t believe I’ve owned this thing over a year. I originally bought it in December 2016 but it didn’t land until March 2017……and all I've really done is fix it.

Never had a working speedo so £75 later on a R32 GTST speedo cable and I'm hoping we now have one (I'm yet to test it).

Since I got the car, it’s had this weird Laminova alloy radiator in it with a huge bottom bit that’s not connected and a billion cable ties around it for no reason. It definitely doesn’t seem like it was originally for a Nissan but it worked fine and cooled the car really well. The rad cap kept hitting the slam panel when I tried to remove it. It was only a matter of time until something broke. This was only the 2nd time I removed the cap so it was definitely a shit setup.

I whipped the radiator down to Autocool in Scarborough, North Yorkshire who welded it back together for me. I also decided to be all scene and fit a new genuine Blitz radiator cap I got cheap from Japan since I lost the one it had on it (possibly left it at the radiator place and couldn’t be bothered to go back for it) but this time I massaged a small recess in the slam panel so the radiator cap now goes on and off without touching anything.

I can’t deal with a tatty interior on my cars and the Laurels was bugging my happiness greatly. The big hole where the passenger air vent should be was really annoying but they are really rare to find. Luckily I found a whole dashboard at an UpGarage and had it sent to Jesse Streeter who stripped it down, disposed of the main shell and sent everything onto me. It was an expensive way to do things but I now have a passenger air vent, the proper velour covered dash pads instead of vinyl wrapped ones and a nice new wooden dash panel since all the wood was flaking off mine. I did have to mill out the clock hole for my water temp gauge which was scary but I did a better job than Stevie Wonder did on the last one in Japan. Still not a fan of the white HKS temp gauge but its better than nothing.

My Weds have gone away for a refurb because the scuffed barrels were also eating away at my happiness also. They are being straightened where necessary, dismantled, barrels repaired, centres re-done in a nice sparkly silver because the chrome is showing its age and built up again. As soon as they are back I’ll get new tyres on them and adjust the ride height to suit.

I have no real idea on the condition of my SR other than that it has good compression, breathes a little bit and has an aftermarket headgasket on an otherwise standard motor (who does that!?). So I invested in some Tomei rocker stoppers from Japan with a new gasket from Conceptua Tuning. Never done any kind of engine work before so it was a scary task for me. Engine bay all back together and looking the best it ever has done in the time I’ve owned it.

For ages it has bugged me as to why the entire rollcage has been padded and what is it hiding. Having had to cut a piece of the padding to fit the air vent I found it was a lovely shiny black underneath the aged and tatty padding. I made the decision it was a bit overkill so removed the padding from the rear diagonals, centre up rights, roof bar and a section of the front bars. This left me with the visor bar padded, top of the side bars padded and the bottoms padded just to protect my helmet, head or legs from clanging them. The cage is a Saito Roll Cage which I deduced from the big ACHIEVE sticker wrote on the roof bar and doing some Googling.

Bought some more drift wheels. To go with the 17x9 Advan SA3R’s I picked up last year for £100 I managed to bag a pair of 17x8 Advan SA3R’s for £100 and a pair of R33 GTR wheels for £100 in the same week.

Still to do:
Fit my Weds Kranze ERM’s
Buy and fit new tyres
Adjust ride height
Full 4 wheel alignment
Grow some balls and do a skid

And in final news, I found a website called www.ajes.com where you can input your chassis number of your import car and it’ll tell you how many times it has been through the Japanese auction. For the $10 it cost I took the risk and found it had been through the auctions 4 times in its life. 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2016. The best thing was that I managed to get all 4 auction reports so I could see its condition and what its had done over the years (even though I cant read them) but the 2013, 2015 and 2016 auctions had pictures of the car so I could see how much its changed (or not as the case is) over the years.

And then I bought it in late 2016 from Royal Trading who bought it from auction so I had the report and pics from that already. It was really good to see how its changed over the years….and I hate the person who ruined the interior between 2013 and 2015.

Not long until Spring, not long until my wheels are back (I hope) and not long until I get to actually take this on track and see what its like.

The recent goings on……

Firstly the Laurel has 20mm extended studs in the front and it came from Japan with two 8mm spacers and a 4mm spacer on each side (sketchy as fuck) so I fitted some cheap 20mm slip on spacers (less sketchy but still bad). I finally managed to slam those out in favour of some standard from studs so I utilise some 20m hubcentric spacers instead.

Didn’t like the orange indicators so bought some clear ones from Russia. They are surprisingly good quality. Wouldn’t say 10/10 for fitment but a solid 8.5/10 which was better than I expected.

Sold my Manarays in anticipation for the Weds to be back from refurb in time for Easter weekend…..and they weren’t.

So I stole the SA3R’s off my Volvo 240 and proceeded to pack the car ready for Easter Monday drift day up at Teesside which would be the cars first outing this year, first outing since I changed the turbo manifold and first drift day….a day of firsts.

Got to Teesside OK in the torrential rain. Rear alignment still sketchy as fuck and meeting some snow on the way there proved to be a very brown pants moment. But I removed the kit to protect it from damage and hit the track.

Having only ever drifted my E36 328i before I was apprehensive but felt comfortable in the Laurel. Despite the pouring rain I wasn’t having any issues with understeer and was generally getting the feel of the car in the morning. The extra lock over a stock E36 felt great, it felt faster, initiated easier, didn’t require so much steering because I had the power to adjust it, a working handbrake to use if I needed (I don’t like over use of the handbrake in drifting, bad habits and all that) but it was nice to have it there and I was consistently starting to link turn one into turn two on National track which I’ve only ever managed a couple of times in my E36 beforehand.

Lunch time picture with the other lads I was with:

It was wetter than an otters pocket and no photographers turned up so I didn’t get any photos of the car but one lad from Project Thirteen did get a brief video of my best run (and final run as you’ll find out why in a moment)

Video here:

After this run my mate went gravel hunting in his E36 so I swapped to the West track. Down to the first corner, initiated and BOOM, the gearbox/clutch explodes. Much rattle, such noise. Game over.

Got recovered home and its now sat in my workshop waiting until I can get my new 2 post lift installed before I yank the gearbox out and see what has broken.

This means Ill be back in the E36 at the new Teesside day and that’s going to suck. I love my E36 but the Laurel has made me realise that a stock 328I with 50% polybushes, rack spacers and eBay coilovers is not the easiest thing to pilot and I need to invest some more money into it to make it more capable. Some HSD’s might be on the cards first to try and stop it leaning so bad in corners.

Awwww mannnnn - If you get all the bits together etc and fancy a hand for an evening or whatever swapping the clutch then im happy to help - although from what you've said, it sounds more like the gearbox has given up, not the clutch!

Thanks dude, really appreciate the offer!

I'm hurrying along and doing the research to get my 2 post lift converted to single phase from 3 phase (cheaper than buying a single phase lift) so as soon as thats in and working ill get the Laurel apart. Currently having the lift sat on a pallet in my workshop isnt helping my space situation so its the motivation I need at least to get it fitted.

I initially thought clutch but thinking about what its done and the noises it makes, myself and two mates agree with you. Sounds like the box has crapped itself. Just depends if I can get it rebuilt or if I need to find another box. Then whilst its in bits do I fit a new clutch and a lighter flywheel......

I wont know until I get it apart.

Mate I’m loving this car! Such a shame about the clutch/gearbox! With the ramp have you seen the 3 phase to single phase transformers? Seen them on eBay etc before if you’re struggling to convert it over. And finally where did you get the clear side repeaters from? I ordered ceffiro a31 Bumper And side indicators from Russia and the front bumpers fitted a treat but the wing ones were nowhere near and now I’m stuck with clear bumper and horrible orange wing repeaters

Thanks so much! The gearbox is extremely annoying but it crunched into 2nd anyway so I knew a rebuild would eventually be on the cards, I just expected it to last longer than half a day. Just one of those things to add to the list. I swear I spend more time fixing this than driving it..... Standard Nissan life really.

I got them from a guy with the username of appelya but he is also known as appleofthesin on Instagram. The indicators and one wing marker fit perfectly but the other marker is a bit rattly compared to the oem ones. Well enough to not be a worry of falling out though.

I've been speaking to a company about inverters today and what I need. It was miles cheaper to buy a 3 phase lift close to me and run it through an inverter than it was to try and find a single phase lift. Just at the stage of working out what I need and how to do it before I drill massive holes in my floor and end up with a lift that doesn't work because the parts haven't been ordered and less space than I have with it sat on a pallet.

cheapest option is probably just buy another 5 speed box, pick one up for £200 now a days if you look in the right places - and if its stuffed then send it back, guess its just the hassle - if you can afford then get yours rebuilt then you'll be good to go! SR boxe's are easy peasy to take in/out anyway

Tell me about it! I picked mine up in November and still haven’t even driven the thing! I feel for you with the box, I discovered the other day they left the standard rb20det box in there when they did the rb25det conversion so know it won’t last long and am looking out for a spare rb25 box ready for when mine goes bang

Ok cheers, I had a feeling you were going to say that’s where you got them from. I’ve seen them just didn’t fancy paying out over £100 for some indicator lenses haha I brought the complete bumper indicators, new for a a31 ceffiro for £20 and they fit perfectly, it’s just the wing repeaters that were a bit too small, I’ll find something that will fit the hole haha and with the bumper ones rattling are you sure it’s not the metal clip that they fix in to that’s rusted out? That’s what’s happened on mine, all 4 mounting points have rusted so bad that they’d disintegrated so just fitted some new ones and have no rattles at all now.

Anyway look forward to seeing your progress on this one

I've seen a couple of SR boxes about and they all have that 2nd gear crunch like mine did. Typical SR box I guess so if mine is saveable then I'll just get it rebuilt. If its garbage I'll get it rebuilt and know its good rather than fitting a second hand box, it letting go in a few months time and then doing the job twice.

Send me some pics of your car dude. Be interesting to see it :)

I didnt pay the £100 luckily. I had a sizeable eBay voucher I cashed in against them to make it less painful. Its the ones on the wing that rattle. Well its the drivers one, on the bumper itself they are screwed straight into the fibreglass and don't move at all.

The box is a pain but only the latest in a long list of things I've had the fix. On the plus side my R32 GTST speedo cable worked perfectly so for a few hours I had a working speedo. I discovered Teessides National Track in 2nd gear is exactly 1km long haha

Best bet really dude! And a nice fresh SR box will be smoooooooooth

I’ve kept putting off working on this since blowing the gearbox up saying “when my 2 post lift is fitted I’ll fix it”. Nearly 2 months later and it’s still not fitted so I’ve kept myself busy with other things.

First off I washed it because it got filthy being trailered back from Teesside. It probably doesn’t count as an update but with the effort it was to push it about the yard, I'm counting it.

Got my Kranze back from refurb. They need the lips re-polishing by hand but I just sealed them quickly and threw them on. The centre caps are also garbage but trying to find decent ones on YAJ is not easy. They are all as knackered as mine.

Found the front wheels didn’t fit because of my brake caliper spacing. I needed to run a 10mm spacer to clear the caliper but dingus here took out the extended studs and fitted standard ones a while back. With a 10mm spacer there wasn’t enough meat left on the stud for the nut. Reluctant to put the extended studs back in I dug out some 20mm hubcentric spacers I already had and re-rolled my arches to try and improve on the Japanese Stevie Wonders previous attempt. Didn’t go as well as I’d hoped but with them being crap to start with I couldn’t have made them look any worse. I also flattened back the lip on the inner arch which was close.

Bought a BMW E36 battery in boot cable from a mate and a battery box on eBay to do an in boot conversion. The tiny battery on it currently goes flat every 3 weeks so its time to fit a proper size battery on it. I also bought a Storm bulkhead inner wing protective thing for the loom I need to fit once I’ve routed the battery cable.

Then at 3am the other night, I had a realisation that in the time I’ve been saying I’ll get my lift fitted before I fix the Laurel, I could have fixed it. I’ve had to take a couple of “man up” pills to crack on removing the box on the floor. Not what I wanted to do but needs must.

I wasn’t sure what had broken at Teesside but it was very quickly confirmed when I drained the oil from the gearbox in preparation for removal.

This was the sump plug

EbcBEnr.jpg

And this was in the bottom of the bucket when I drained the oil out.

TGVcfTI.jpg

Luckily I picked up a good condition box last week in anticipation for my box being full of gravel. It wasn’t too bad to remove except every bolt was done up FT with an impact gun. There wasn’t bags of room but it wasn’t as tight as an S-body either. It did slide back without rotating it so I’m hoping it’ll slide back on the same. Currently both boxes are on the floor, everything is swapped over and its ready to install.

FswzsPj.jpg

I’ve got a Nismo gearbox mount on order from Japan which should be here within the week. Should really do the engine mounts too but that can wait until next month.

On the plus side I confirmed it has a Nismo clutch plate in it. I was going to fit a better clutch and flywheel but I’ll save that job for another day as I want to eventually switch over to a 350Z gearbox and rid myself of SR box woes forever.

qLQuGLO.jpg

Hoping to get the new box in this weekend and an MOT shortly after so I can start using it again!
