Aston Coffee Table

Maybe he thought an offer of 40% of the asking price wasn't serious. Still, now you've got all sarcastic I'm sure he'll reconsider.

And you're complaining about his manners?

Have you not heard of bartering.
There was no starting amount for it on this thread (£200 was on a previous thread) and earlier in the thread he insinuates that he would take £100 - and open to all offers.

It doesn't hurt to say no if he wanted more for it.

Certainly - Barter is a method of exchange by which goods or services are directly exchanged for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money. Says so on wikipedia and everything.

I think you mean haggling, but I'm English so I don't do it.

Touché

However barter is a synonym of haggle, so the context of my statement was pointedly obvious

I didn't realise that being 'English' means you have an inherent inability to barter or haggle. I suppose what you mean by 'English' is brought into question by how you define the term

Clearly the context of your use of "barter" was obvious, or else I wouldn't have been able to infer that you meant "haggle".

Synonyms are words that mean the same, barter and haggle are excellent examples of what a synonym isn't, as they are clearly defined as different things. One is system of exchange without money, one a process of negotiation over price. You can certainly haggle while bartering, but bartering over a cash value is meaningless.

The classical English cultural reserve which limits haggling ability is commonly accepted. There is even a current series of television advertisements which makes use of the the English's inability to haggle as it's main selling point, delivered using a fat Iranian gentleman.

I suppose what you mean by 'English' is brought into question by how you define the term

That's quite the anacoluthia. Actually what I mean by "English" is defined by the definition, not brought in to question by it. Naturally I mean "English" in a narrow and whimsical "being mocked by other nations for being shite at haggling" sense.

So, is this helping you buy the table or not, do you think?

The definition that you choose will define the meaning of the term you have chosen. The term 'English' can create many varied connotations. Which connotations you chose will define the meaning of the word. Each person will give different meanings to such terms. Without context you leave the reader to make an assumption upon which values you have associated it with.

I appreciate that on a basic level a synonym is a word that has the same meaning, however a synonym can be used to define a word that serves as a figurative substitute for another. So it is in fact a valid synonym, a little tenuous, but given you were able to infer my meaning you ramify the shared meaning to negotiate.

So, is this helping you buy the table or not, do you think?

No. Caged has refused my offer. Good luck to him and nissan nutter. Who ever buys it will have cool piece of automotive art.

Capatain Muppet, if you want to continue this session of banter I think we should contain it to PMs so people still inerested in the table can look at the thread without pages of posts not pertinent to the sale.

Sorry for the delay in reply, but I missed your earlier post as I was using my mobile phone browser to look at Driftworks and I missed your post whilst being dragged round the local shopping centre by the other half looking for clothes.

Yes, definitions define. I'm not really sure what your point is with the first sentence. Connotations are infered by the reader, or are an emtional response based on past experiences, and I'm really not responsible for what goes on inside your head. How you feel about the word "English" really has nothing to do with me. I'm assuming you have an emotional response to it beyond the faint embarrassment at coming from such a rubbish* country that I feel.

The context of my use of the word "English" was that we're shit at haggling. My implication was that the English are shit at haggling. The fact that this fucking table** is still for sale seems to back this up.

Oh, if you mean your use of words is vague then yes, I agree.

No PMs thanks, without an audience of my peers I really can't tell which one of us is the most pointlessly pedantic. Plus it's not really banter is it? Banter should be more fun than this. This is more like marking English*** coursework over the internet.

No problem, I was out stealing cars and fucking bitches.

* apart from some truly world class engineering.
** I mentioned the table, so this totally counts as an on topic post.
*** here I mean English as in the language.
