Bizarre diff happenings

It's still not scrubbing, so I'm still unsure as to what is going on there.

Think yourself lucky, one of my neighbours is trying to get me arrested for having an "unroadworthy" vehicle because I wake them up when I get home from work...they scrub away merrily and make the subframe clonk...nice...stupid idiot neighbour, nobody else even notices me get home, I try to be quiet. It's got nothing to do with the roadworthyness of my vehicle anyway, she just doesn't like that I work on my car and come home late etc, she goes out of her way to be a pain and try to get me in trouble. Grrr.

Ahh what it would be like to not have scrubbage... :(

Yep, back to front clutch. Bizarre. I need to sort it in a bit. Any suggestions?

Ben, I'm happy it isn't scrubbing, just confused as to why. Also, don't want something else to break while at D1, as it spoils the day and wastes dosh. If it breaks, I'd rather it go soon, so I can sort it.

Try a different a different pair of tyres on it and see what happens? The tyres might have just scrubbed enough so it's not really noticable, what tyres/tread depth/size are they?

I had P6000s on the back and they seemed to quieten down a bit once they got a bit scrubbed, hardly made any noise at all.

I was going to change them-great minds etc.....

It hasn't just quietened down, the sound has gone completely, along with the skippingness. I will jack it up today and check it is still locked.

There's a very easy way to tell if it's locked, dump the clutch and check the trails. :p

Actually you wouldn't even have to check the trails, it'd be blindingly obvious if it wasn't locked.

Could imagine it now.

"sorry about that officer, just testing my welded diff, dont suppose you could see through the smoke whether there was one line or two?"

lol...that's slightly paranoid.

Anyway, I didn't mean to do a big fckoff burnout, just dump the clutch. If one wheel spins up and you just go in a straight line, it's broken, if the car squirms side to side and has ridiculous traction spinning both up, it's locked.

Another alternative is one wheel on grass, one on tarmac.

I know, was only joking. Like you said should be pretty obvious.would have thought the difference between a locked and open diff would be pretty noticeable. Weird it doesnt scrub thou.

Found the problem!

When I jacked it up to check it again, I found the weld must have come apart because it spun with one wheel on the deck. That's good news in a way because it means my drifting is getting better as I've been using an open diff for a while.

The bad bit is that I've got to take it off and weld it all up PROPERLY now.

Not sure how it's been welded initially, but from what I've read, you want to fill the valleys of the cogs with weld as well rather than just try and weld them onto each other as this means the cogs have nowhere to move even if they do break free....
helpful?

Yes, mate it is.

I forgot to post up, but it got welded properly by the metalsmith at work. He gave it LOADS and filled up the whole diff gear case with weld. I can't see that little fella coming apart.

I'm fitting it tomorrow morning when I get my roll cage fitted. I'll change the oil regularly to see if any bits come off, weld wise.

Well, it's back on and full chirpage has been restored

The cage is coming along nicely too- got the main rollbar done and will continue after work this week.

Yes mate, with an Engineer officer from work. He's got some bar left over from making his own off roader from scratch. He's got a CAD program and an awesome pipe bending tool, which doesn't crease the bar as it shapes it.

We'll be continuing tomorrow after work. Apart from the main loop, it is going to have a diagonal and bars going to the wheel arches and one across the rear struts. Not sure if we'll go for the fronts too, or stay with just the rear.

Obviously won't be FIA approved, but it will be solid and I just want a bit of extra protection, just in case.
