Wouldn't put them on a touring though, tailgates aren't cheap for them...

Do you even need them for BDC or just a boot that can be opened from the outside??

Boot must be opened from outside I beleive, and only then when you have fuel cell/battery in there. I guess e36 probs does have battery in the back though.

It also has a handle to open from the outside too though so don't worry.

Just be aware how expensive and rare bmw touring tailgates are before you go drilling holes.
