Burton Baron Snowboard

Well the girlfriend is off to do a season this year and i'm going out to see her quite a few times and want to get good in the park, unfortunately this is no good for the board I have at the moment.

Its a Burton Baron Board the very last they made before they switched the name to the Custom and Custom X.

When I bought it 3 years ago it was around £500 and the new customs are around the £600 mark.

The board is in pretty good nick, its got the odd mark from the pain in the arse skiers shoving there poles on your board in the que's for the lifts and on the base theres only 1 deep cut from what can only be a rock or something, but it has been filled in.

The board is in need of a service which I can do or can leave up to the buyer (as some people prefer certain wax etc)

I'm looking for around £180 for the board on its own. The bindings on there are Burton Cartel's which I would prefer to keep but if someone wants them as they go with the board very well indeed I may sell for the right price above £350 (new cartels are £200)

This board is 164 long and the wide version so good for the bigger person. It is f**king rapid on the piste keep up with the best of the skiers no problems (as long as you've got the balls :D). Its very good off piste due to its wide set up.

Also all the stickers can come off as I know they wont be to every ones tastes.

Cheers Chaps, I've been offered some money on gixerjunkies forum but its a bit too low so its still up for grabs.

Its a class board, the red wax stamp in the middle of the board is actually raised aswell not just a picture, just to let you know.

I think its so much nicer than the current Customs X designs, but thats just me.

Who ever gets it will be mucho happy, if anyone has got park-ish boards who might want to part ex I might be interested if its what im after.

Simon-goes-sideways, sounds like your a bit of a boarder, have you ridden any of this years boards ? Im looking at the K2 Park or Dark star, DC PBJ (cos it so darn cheap), DC MLF, Ride DH, Lib Tech skate Banana, erm think thats it. Im going to hemel snow dome to try a few out on the 14th Dec any board that anyone would recommend me trying ???

hey, yeah Ive been riding for 6 years now and heavily into freestyle for the last 3 yrs.

Im very good friends with the people at Conspiracy in St Albans, and the only board I have ridden this year is the latest Rome Artifact, which is a super soft board ideal for snowdomes and jibbing. My actual board is a 2007 Ride Society which I use for everything.

From the boards youve listed........the Parkstar is a high end freestyle/park board with rocker or flat camber (which is all the rage this year)....the Darkstar is a great all round 'all mountain' board.

The DC boards this year dont have any particular great technology involved, they are all good for the price points and can be used pretty much 'all mountain'.

Lib Tech Skate Banana i would stay away from, its pretty much the No1 bandwagon board, and its not cheap either, near £500.........it is also the number 1 returned board due to customers either not liking it, or having issues with it.

I'm at the Hemel Snow Dome 2 - 3 times a month, next time will be this friday for the Morrow Freestyle Jam.

As for other boards to consider, you should look at the Ride DH for a great all round freestyle board (in addition to the ones above)..........the brand new Yes range is pretty sick, but the boards a bit on the heavy side and its their first year.

The choice is truly endless, you should speak to a few snowboard shops to get some opinions as well.

THe only problem with the Parkstar is they dont do a wide version I believe which I need with size 12 boots :( The Darkstar do the wide so think that the one i'll try out.

Yeah loads of boards coming out with this rocker crap on it, i'll see what its like when I try them out. The Skate Banana I've been told to be wary of seems like alot of hype for nothing.

The guys at my local snow and rock are pretty cool so chat to them got a local shop called Ocean Sports who help out a bit but there not a clued up as the snow and rock guys.

Yeah the list is never ending, its so annoying as well cos I always think the crappest boards have some of the best designs, I'm loving the DC graphics thats why i think i'm drawn to them (and the price) might give the MLF a good go though, a least its got a sintered base unlike the PBJ.

If you think of anything let me know.

Cheers Elliott

I just had a quick chat with my mate Leah, she works at Conspiracy and is a real snowboard geek !!......all I told her was your previous board and that you want to get something freestyle oriented, she straight out mentions Ride DH (which comes in a wide) and the K2 Darkstar, again comes in wide...both in the lengths you will need.

Out those 2, i would go for the DH (the wide version is called the Dose i think). My board, the Society is a level up on the DH, but needs to be ridden more aggresively.

Best thing to do is to demo the boards and see what you like best

I can honestly say, having spent over 560 days on the hill in the last 5 years, that the only freestyle board I would recommend to anyone any more is the Never Summer Evo - R. Rocker Camber technology will change your life and means that you don't have to suffer any loss of performance elsewhere. Plus, unlike everyone else's rocker'd boards, the small cambered section means it doesn't feel like a wet sponge changing edge on the piste when you're not jibbing around like a monkey. The Evo is the normal version (still 25.5 at the waist for the 161) and the Revolver - R is the wide version (which is what I ride as a park board now). It is, quite simply, sick as fuck.

I'm a colossal snowboard geek myself and have now been on pretty much everything worth talking about this year and have been massively unimpressed with most of the new offerings. That said, if you like the way your Burton rides (which I personally don't, but then I ride super aggressively) then you'll also get on with the Ride DH, any of the Rome wides and the Rossignol boards (which are actually very good). I'd stay away from Battaleon like the plague as most places still struggle to service the triple base layout properly and it's a complete arse to service yourself.

If you want to go much shorter than you did before I'd also recommend importing a Unity Origin as they can be got in short, wide, super stiff configurations that allow you to go mental in the park on big kickers even with a short board. For reference I rode the 160 Origin as my allrounder (I'm 6ft1) for ages and landed kickers badly on that which friends snapped Custom X's on.

Any advice you want on kit drop me a PM

Cheers for the info Sea Squirrel, This Never Summer Evo - R, will it be ok for all round riding aswel or is it an out and out park board ?

Im 6ft 5 and around 80-85kg so guessing I'd have to look at the 161 versions.

Im just looking for prices as want around £300 board, thinking I'll probably get rid of the bindings and boots now as well so looking for new ones of those aswel (dam it LoL)

Ha ha. To be fair mate, if you're that big then anything park specific is pretty much out of the question. Especially if you want to keep around £300. The problem is that the whole snowboard industry is geared around small guys who jib and big guys who freeride. Getting something that's a crossover's actually very difficult. The reality is that the Baron was Burton's attempt at an allmountain freestyle board for big riders. If you genuinely get on well with it then I'd say just ride it in the park and be done with it or you're going to have to look at a two board quiver or a serious hike up in price. The problem is that cheaper boards don't have the stiffness required for taller/bigger guys to land things in the park without snapping them. I rode a brand new freestyle board earlier this year that I'd been given to review. 161 wide, stiffest freestyle board the company made. Second run down I got to the bottom of the slope, went in to a tail ride and then tried to extend that into an olly 180 and as I loaded the tail to spring the whole board snapped in half.

If you want a twin tip board that can do anything then I'd recommend the Revolver-R in 161 flavour. That said, riding a board that short at your height/weight means that when pushing really hard on the piste you'll get wash out on your carves. Anything smaller than a 163 for me and I can't carve heelside at speed without the nose washing out.

If you don't mind it being directional freestyle board then the Never Summer Legacy - R in either 163 or 166 will do you nicely. The 163 will have less rotating mass for freestyle so will spin more easily but won't be such a good allrounder. The 166 with have a higher rotating mass but will be more stable in everything you do. It's still a nice light board so you'd probably be ok. If the prices on those are too high then I'd have a look at the Nitro Team (which can be got in either standard camber or 'gullwing' reverse camber) or the Unity Pride Wide in either 160 or 165. I rode a Pride 165 wide as my allmountain freestyle board for a season and loved it. Even at the end of 100 days on the hill it was still stiffer than everything brand new in the shop. Nitro produced some shit boards for 2-3 seasons due to their constant aim to get everything lighter and lighter but the build quality's come right up again recently so they're worth a look now.

To be honest dude, my genuine recommendation would be to use the Baron until you're at a point where you feel it's holding you back. Unless you've done a whole season with it under your feet it won't be tired yet and you're going to be using it in EXACTLY the way Burton designed it to be used. Once you've spent some time in the park with it you'll know which way you want to go. ie: shorter board for easier rotations and slope style, stiffer board for bigger air/pipe, rail specific board etc. Or you can go for another allrounder that'll do it all (as I've suggested above).

My personal money (if I had to spend it on a board again) would go on the Never Summer Revolver - R in 166 flavour and I'd just suck up the fact it's more expensive against the fact it comes with a brilliant warranty and rides like a dream. As you're lighter than me you could probably rep the 163 to good effect due to the design of the board and not feel like you're missing out.

Ok cool, cheers for that info.

I do like the look of the Summer Revolver I might see if I can stretch to that amount, maybe if I keep my bindings and boots this year, although my boots are pretty fecked.

£465 seem like the going price on that board, do you know/can u get it any cheaper ?

I can't this year I'm afraid dude. The problem is that importing them into the UK is much more expensive this year because all of the boards for this season were ordered in March when the rate of exchange was shocking. Have a chat with the guys at Surface 2 Air sports in Hythe (not the other shops, specifically the Hythe store) and ask for Ian. Tell him you're interested in a Never Summer Legacy R and that I sent you (Ben). See if he can do you a deal. It might be that he can only do a discount on a board and binding/boots package but it's worth a chat.

Another thought I've just had is that the Signal boards are pretty good. You could probably enjoy yourself a lot on the Signal OG 163 wide. It's similar to the Unity Pride although not quite as stiff. I think last years may have been better although they do some wicked boards. As do Option

Cheers, I'll give them a shout tomro or monday and have a chat with them. Think I'll try out the K2 Darkstar, DC MLF, Ride DH though in December and see what there like, then go from there.

Is there anyway I can get hold of a Never board to demo ?

I don't know whether they're doing any demos this year. Get on to their website and fire them an email. I think you'll find the dc and Ride boards pretty flimsy for someone your size dude. The Darkstar's not bad but it's more of an allmountain board than a freestyle board for big people. Even less appropriate for you than your current board.

What do you reckon to the Parkstar then ? They just dont do a wide version thats why I was saying Darkstar as they do a wide version.
Its a pain as all the board you've said arent sold in snow and rock do you think they'll be able to buy them in or would they have already bought all there stocks months back ?

Kit - yes its a lovely board not too in your face like many of the board designs now.

Snow and Rock should have the Signal's in. I know they had them in last season.

The Parkstar will be too soft for you to get anything useful from. Give me a bit and I'll have a look at the Snow and Rock website, see what they're stocking.

Edit: They've got the Nitro Team series in. Talk so them and see if they can get the wide version. That's the best of what they're stocking at the moment. I'll see if I can find any companies that are stocking anything seriously good this year cheap.

Cheers Ben, I rang Ian and Surface 2 Air today, nice guy, chatted to him for a while and he said they've open a new shop up about 2 miles from my house so gonna pop down on Friday to chat with the guys down there, they said they'd part ex my board which Im guessing they'll offer my fuck all for but i'll take it just to see.

Ok well I'll try a Nitro Team board out when I go to hemel, What about the Parkstar ?? Is that any better or just as soft ? and could i get away with out it being wide ?

Nope, you're going to need it to be a wide for sure. Plus it'll handle rails and jumps better as a wide.

I'd forgotten they'd opened a store in Brighton... what a twat! Yeah, Ian's good, really knows his stuff. Plus they aren't too bad on part ex's.

The Team's much stiffer than a lot of the other stuff so you'd probably get on with it ok. When are you going to Hemel?
