Carbon fiber starter kit

To make a things like bonnets, would you not need a few layers of fabric? I'd be quite interested in having a go too!

The way I would make a bonnet (haven't done one yet) would be like this;

top skin
2 layers 2x2 twill carbon
2 layers uni directional
and a final layer of carbon

Then to give it extra strength and be able to insert the rear hinges I would copy the underside frame and make that out of fg

Frame
Black gel coat
3 or 4 layers of 300gsm fiberglass matting

once they are both made and the threaded inserts for hinges have been fitted, I would bond the 2 halves together

Roughly that would all weight about 7-8kg

If you were going for ultimate weight reduction and not bothered about being able to use original hinges you could forget about the underside and just use bonnet pins front and back.

Pretty much all west systems epoxies and sp epoxies are of a 5:1 ratio, all the health and safety aspects are outlined in the manual you get with the kit :)
Hmmm, not entirely true is it ;)

I know for a fact that SP Ampreg 22 is 28:100 and Ampreg 26 is 33:100.

West 105/106 is a general purpose epoxy, not a laminating resin. Yeah you could use it, and for small stuff it'd probably be fine, but its not what I'd use. We used that at college as it was regarded as "the mickey mouse epoxy".

And for something like a bonnet, I would use a lightweight core like Nomex and reduce the layers of matt, as matt adds weight. Plus it'd be stronger

Well I stand corrected:p

Dont forget this is a starter kit for the beginner, its a good basis to start learning from.

As I said, for the job in hand, it will be fine, but I wouldn't want to use it for anything bigger :)

Its also much safer than the SP Ampreg's. Although it will still fuck your skin right up.

Cheers mate. Just keep me on the list of those interested and I'll get stuff from you as soon as everything else is running.
