diff lock switch

guys, the diff i was thinking of is the eaton e locker, people rarely have had problems with it, look it up. electromagnet mechanism to fully lock diff

Im still running a stock nissan LSD. It surprises a lot of people when i tell them. I just drive around it. Its not shimmed and my cars showing 125k on the clock. Works fine.

I wouldnt put a welder anywhere near my car. If it was an out and out track only drift car then maybe, but if i needed an upgrade id be ordering a 1.5 way with a softer lockup both ways.

The idea of a lockable diff is great but a slipper does the job fine. Tony N is right too, the audi 80 had a switchable centre and rear diff.

Does anyone know how a spool diff works? I know quite well how various other diffs work such as ATB's and Viscous but have no idea about spool diffs. I presume they have some sort of spool system inside and only lock under full load or constant pressure? If so would they not be usable? Im sure the V8 supercars use them, thats why they slide around so much.

a spool diff is solid so just the same as a welded diff. Its just machined in one piece with no moving parts.

And yes it is used in many race cars.

I'm exactly the same as you mate. Never had a problem with a VLSD. Tried a welder and it was shit so went back to the viscous one. Been fine since and I don't get any of the horrid handling issues but then mine isnt a dedicated drift car. It's used for literally everything.

whoa defending the viscous diff, deep....

i found it the worst thing in the world.

went from a Nismo Pro GT 2way to a normal diff as above, would often just spin 1 wheel and leave me standing like a cock.

the standard diff is also useless in my mates 380bhp s14a, cant put the power down at all. just a nice spinning sound from 1 side of the car.

maybe the diff was shot to shit as it was a tempory measure, but i couldnt wait to get back to my fun, grippy, silent 2way diff.

yeah the stock viscous in my old s14a was a pile of crap, almost as bad as a open diff so I welded it so I had something to drift. But the viscous on the z32 is holding up really well. Even using 255 and 265 18's and also when I used the super sticky Federal RSR's at silverstone.

I think it would be an expensive idea to develop and when the mojority of people can't/don't want to afford a proper 2 way, it'll bve aimed at a very small market.

I used to work on drag cars and it's something already employed among street/strip drivers. You can find switch lock diffs in pneumatic and electric that drop into the rear end housing. They aren't as expensive as you'd think either.

Not sure how easy they'd be to find that slide into rear end housing for anything JDM. Might have to use the rear end housing from a newer mustang or camaro that way you could keep the IRS but straight axles kill it drifting
