Drifting with open diff?

I learnt to "drift" in my 106 with some "trays" which i placed under the rear "wheels", i used a wide open space, a car park in "fact" at my local fast food establishment

You've just told an absolute beginner with 10K's worth of car to go an "learn" on a public roundabout when his car is patently not up to the job. Sure, you can go sideways in anything but if its got an open diff not with any real control ........ which is the point of drifting.

As for ripping your engine off the mounts, you sure you didnt blow the welds on your intake at the same time?

Granted, I see your point... I haven't told the fella to do anything though, I just told him what I did. He's a big boy no doubt, I'm sure he's capable of carrying out his own risk analysis...

And please do not patronize about what can and can't happen mechanically, been a mechanic for years... And I'm sure I'm not the only person to tare through a mount like this!?

Also, thanks for reiterating my point about not having any real control with an open diff...

Ripping the mounts off E36s when drifting is pretty normal, no idea why he tried to give you jip about that.

And E30s too, as I've found out since owning mine. Bastard things.

Breaking an engine mount is a bit different from ripping an engine off of both. And if thats "common" then Ive obviously not been involved enough with drifting over the last 12 years, I do apologise.

Oh sorry, being 'involved' in drifting for a long time makes you unquestionable now.

BMs don't tend to 'just' break and engine mount a bit, they rip well away from the mounts, so the engine's sitting about 6 inches away from where it should be, and you end up needing to ratchet strap the thing back in to vaguely the right place even to make it drive again.

He's not wrong in that comment, get over it.

Im not even going to bother .......... :D

Look, the guy has given shit advice and then got all shirty when someone has pointed that out, whether engine mounts ripping off of cars is common or not.

Youre usually the first person to tell people to get to a practice day rather than learn on the street so why arent you reiterating that bit? Could it be that Ive already said it and agreeing with me is not an option?

Because I'm not talking about anything else?

IMO fucking about with an open diff, and fucking about on the street when you can't do shit, is a waste of time, hence not talking about that in any way, as that's been covered.

I was replying to him when he said about you taking the piss out of him for saying about the engine being ripped off the mounts, and that surely he's not the only one who's experienced that.

And I said no, he's not the only one, it's common on BMs when drifted, as it is.

Not hard to grasp.

I dont want this to turn into an episode of hollyoaks (apart from the tits maybe) but he only said about danger to manifold, its hardly laying in to the guy lol.

I think I've been pretty reasonable to be fair, done my best not to get shirty! lol When someone's calling you out on something like that though, you'd be a mug not to defend your self a bit ey!?

And yea, I agree. It is properly shite advice, and the OP is free to take it or not... In my defense I was merely sharing my experiences, which is surely what forums like this are for, no?

In fact my advice would be not to listen to my shared experience cos it wasn't fun at all, I wrote off loads of cars and I lost my driving license or something ;)

And you can't tell me that I'm the only person on here who first went sideways streeto!? . .
