E36 328i turbo?

you need to speak to gunni hes the man when it comes to charging zimma lumps so im told

You need a stand alone to run that, or at least something to pull back the timing and add in some fuel, but that will only work at fairly low boost!

Its not as straight forward as they make it out to be, they are supplying a universal intercooler and kit, its not e36 specific, so that will all have to be modded.

I'm aware of that mate, and I don't think my car will take a stand alone ecu due to the vanos.... (though I could be wrong)

I was told that my standard ecu would have to be chiped and maped at a cost of around £1000...... ouch!

Thats cool, just making sure, as some people think that those ebay kits are complete, as they advertise.

I'd recommend compiling the parts together yourself, rather than buying one of those kits, at least that way you know exactly what your buying.

I did look into this, apparently it is possible to use megasquirt, you just need to set the range of the vanos. As long as you initiate the vanos at the correct rpm and stop it, it should be fine.

Lol, what a wank kit, basically a BMW manifold (may only work on LHD, most do) and a load of universal stuff that universally dont fit, even the pipes arent for a BM.

Not like its cheap either. Best off buying a manifold and cobbling the rest together yourself.

ok, how about this....
I know the 2.5 lump is fairly strong but what's the ally block of the 2.8 like when turbo'd?

handle 350-400 ponies?

Was thinking about this myself a while back, small bits of info on that thread

http://www.driftworks.com/forum/technical/106991-e36-325i-turbo-info.html

To be honest, these days im thinking 1jz would be a much better option for a reliable, tuneable base engine, seems like it would be the same sort of hassle to put that in as it would to convert/properly set up a turbo lump?? I dont no shit though :D Would just be easier to get the numbers up, 350-400bhp... No worries

Them kits are for left hand drive only, will take alot of moding to work.

As for turboing a 328 u will need to uprade engine internals. 2.5 non vanos would be a better start and you can get upto 400hp on stock internals. the hardest thing is getting the manifold for a rhd car. i have seen one of the lhd manifolds modded to fit tho.

If u can weld you can make up a manifold urself and pick up the other bits yourself, might even work out cheaper for you.

And yes Gunni on e30zone is your man to ask, plus there is a thread on there somework about turboing m50/m52's.

I seriously considered slapping a turbo on my 325, doing it DIY with second hand parts if needs be didn't work out too expensive apart from the management. Even buying the management second hand it'll still need to be mapped etc etc. I worked it out at roughly 1.5K to complete. I decided to sell it and buy a R33!

i'v been reading good results of the 2.5 but never hear anything on the 2.8. its not just vanos that would put me off the 2.8 engine for the turbo conversion its also nikasil issues.
as msc said you would be better speaking to gunni (who mapped phil's ae86 vems ecu) he would be better to advise on everything you would need and weather it is worth doing with your engine

Thanks for all the info!

The thing is, there are soooooo many r33's, you dont often see big power bimmers....

do all the 2.8's have the nakasil issue or just certain years?

it was a recall years ago alot have ausill(spelling) but theres still alot with nikasill ive broke lots of 328i zimmas that suffered knackerd blocks alot of people run nikasil without having issues and will cry about this conversation i personally feel its like driving a time bomb but thats just my opinion:thumbs: if gunni shows his face he will advise you on whats best to do as ive never done one and can only comment on my expeirence of breaking beemers

Bugger! I better check mine... If it is the nikasil lump then I'll try and source an M50 without vanos :D
