Edited: E36 4 pot, sort of low budget. Possible actual skids soon.

Hello,

First off this isn't some ground breaking stuff, I will lay down my story as it unfolds so if this is not your thing then you may wanna find something more interesting. If you fancy a read then grab a cuppa or a beer and read on my friends.

I have dabbled in E36's and an MX5 for a while and did some questionable things I won't mention on here ;). Fast forward and I got to pick up this absolute pile of crap. All for £200. It had no brakes, no M.O.T and smelt like a abandoned drug den but it was a start, so what did I get for that wholesome sum of £200 ? See below.
13408853_1710093115908034_1605725563_n_zpsheufepol.jpg

Not sure what happened but obviously my potato wasn't functioning that well. You get the Idea.
13597729_1758435987733660_465085104_n_zpsn95nxcfc.jpg

It was horrible. However it was clean(ish), rust free(ish) and did not overheat. One issue - It's a 1.8i, yup this baby has all of 115bhp - 20 odd years ago, great start.:wack:

Decided I will stick with the 4 banger as in my mind man foot and speed can cure all. I am also a firm believer in starting off with low power and progressing my skill before I worry about horsepower. It's RWD, it will do. Fast forward a while and I saved up some cash. Then I went out and got the following.

14276435_1641534109470264_2077084078_n_zpsarhpt7ij.jpg

Yes, they're cheap, yes they are crap but they will do the job.:)

I figure if I sort the chassis out I can drop in a bigger engine at a later date. Least the rest of the car will be up to some form of standard and a good base for a much needed heart transplant. Service bits were also bought but I wont bore you with pics of them. New filters throughout, fresh oil, coolant etc.

So got the parts fitted, some of the bolts put up a fight but I got her low. Now...... I know I have some wheels somewhere.
14334421_590323111155268_1529644864_n_zpsfth4hxjg.jpg

Some old ACS Reps from a previous 36. Bolted them on to see what they looked like, also painted the front bumper, mirrors and grills black because sceneshit yo ! :smokin:

14449288_543882565811212_4417216324535582720_n_zpsnd8idxss.jpg

o_ODrag stance - I did not realise the top mounts also lower the car and had set the coil overs at a height I ran my other E36 with stock top mounts on, adjustment needed but it will do for now. Set the Camber plates on max just to see how they looked. Much adjustment required and I knew it couldn't stay like that but always fun to play about.

So with the lows sorted, a service done to the engine, it was time to look at the brakes. Shock horror the rear lines were shot. Pretty sure "they all do that sir" couldn't be more correct. So I need to redo the lines. I always wanted a car with a Hydro. Plan formulated I came up with the following.
14733268_720440688107514_2737687333577949184_n_zpsw07p41hu.jpg

14718159_663007233859022_2391707325380427776_n_zpsxumjjblh.jpg

So I bolted up the Hydro, ran the lines and ripped out all the old lines from the underside from midway back. Tidied up some wires, removed the airbag sensor and secured all these down, used grommets etc. Followed some MSA type guidelines for fixing spaces. It is in no way pretty but it is functional. I also stripped the rear. Left the sound deadening as basically I couldn't be assed to battle with it. I can revise the set up and remove it at a later date. I left all the creature comforts up front. I plan to hit up some static shows etc as a few mates are into that sort of thing and long journeys to those and skid days in relative comfort would be nice. :euge:

So browsing the bay of E and this popped up. It was local, cheap and clean enough.
15535502_1855155388062320_6302276006166134784_n_zpspc0hkkru.jpg

So I have a seat, what else do I need ? Well obviously my first port of call was mounting the thing. Had a few discussions with friends within the drift community and they all suggested the Driftworks:dw: side mounts. I wanted something strong and that would bolt in easily. I also received feedback these are offset so centre the seat as best as possible. I feel safer with these holding the seat down over some others - Thanks for the Haribo lads.:D

15534892_1222180417848302_3444424893624483840_n_zpsbkxqeeq1.jpg

Okay cool, that fits. My fat ass just snugs in and the position is bang on. E36's bolt the seat belt clip to the seat mount as stock. I didn't fancy making up any sort of frame or bolting it to somewhere it shouldn't be so made my way online for the following.
15876686_1715259385400525_8818554674668896256_n_zpsj3zqncbc.jpg

So this took a few days to arrive and then I looked at getting it bolted up. Looked online and asked a few Friends and came up with a solution.
14624395_689302481254353_4257783526440566784_n_zpskm16nb4l.jpg

Pic above was from when I first mounted it but upon talking to some reputable people and getting a  I came up with a better solution. I will be honest, it's touching on that 45° angle going to the rear but for now it is the only solution I have. Original seat was stanky and sagging. I will revise it at a later date but I have been assured it should not pose any issues (unfortunately no pics)

Surprise, surprise the Ebay Hydro Cylinder was a piece of crap, I had however planned for this so had one of these ready to swap in.
14727564_202551806856601_4466455186826592256_n_zps6wghy7wl.jpg

Got that fitted and had a play, being a 318i it uses drums on the rear, did this set up as inline (Master to hydro and out to the rear brakes) Drums lock up a treat ! :D I should now be able to do some Hydro type things. I know in reality I will barely touch it as they scrub off speed and it is not the best habit to start relying on them however the whole set up was cheap enough and it provided an easy solution (and excuse) to route the line to the rear internally.

To me Drifting is about having fun, meeting people and improving both myself and the car as and when I see fit. I know some will see the bucket/harness as a potential danger due to no cage in event of a roll over but it provides me with great support and I don't have to worry about keeping myself in the seat, besides the events I plan to do - I would have to be REALLY unlucky to ever roll it. Looking back I could of done some things different but I am so far happy with it :D

Updates to come shortly. May of exceeded the 10,000 character limit on my first attempt

Thanks for reading

Welcome Marcus. Looks like a good way to get started with having fun

Thank you ! I have always had a bit of fun with RWD stuff but this is my first more serious build. although minimal to some of the stuff on here. I have a load more to come and will keep this updated :D

So I decided I didn't like the ACS wheels  and they needed tyres anyway. I always liked E34 BBS and a friend of mine picked some up cheap for his car, thought they looked nice so I went on the hunt. Turns out he must of got lucky because Drift Tax means people wanted silly money for them and I know I will run out of non existing talent and did not fancy smashing expensive (to me anyway) wheels. I realise I could of kept stock rims, been a man and gone skidding  but I wanted to build a half decent looking E36. Too many bashed up ones about, so a browse online, a trip "oop north" and these appeared.

Jaguar XJS Lattice wheels. Similar look to the E34 and a similar spec. They came with jag spec balloon tyres (stupidwide/fuckingballoon/15). I recognise this car has low power so went for some "Hifly" budget as all hell tyres. Cheap, disposable and at 165 wide silly low contact patch. That should help combat the lack of power (or so I thought) :p

Got the tyres mounted up and had a play with the headlights. I am not completely useless so friends come and go when repairs, mods and much needed hangouts are required, did some stuff.

So most of the bits fitted. Time for an M.O.T. So did it pass ? Of course it didn't , mind you it did not require that much. Some bulbs (sure I checked those before  ...... meh) and it required a new front LCA. By this point I wasn't in the mood for more mods/work so just went with a set of Lemforders and got the garage to fit, the result? PASSED :cool::cool:. After a good few months of spannering, tweaking and hunting out bargains I had a road legal (sort of drift) car. Result.

So I drove it about for a bit, figured a few weeks in use would bring up any niggles, nothing much happened and I did some stuff. Which resulted in other stuff. To my surprise and delight it skids with relative ease, even in the dry. The hydro does come in handy as I have to go balls out fast, yank the wand and man foot it around bouncing off the limiter. :D that resulted in some of this.

Good Effort ! Got a bit carried away with some skids, Ended up with a delam and kept going and then, well yeah. By this point I liked the way it looked and I liked the way it drove. I get bored easy though and I cannot ever pass up a bargain so these found their way to me.

For all the wheel haters, hate away these are 15" REPS, yes replica wheels but again I did not fancy destroying a set of expensive genuine contours. Besides I believe genuine are only 17" and I have a soft spot for low E36's on 15's. These will do for what I want and accommodate a 195/50 tyre very well, sit better on the car and in my opinion look better.

After I had completed some skids and shenanigans (I won't call it drifting as it wasn't) I felt the car could use more grip so the 195 tyres should offer me some improvement. It is all a bit "see how it goes" with this car, I trial and error, pick and choose what I feel best suits me and my driving style. That and I like changing things up, so how do these sit ?
Contours%20on_zpsmjzydy5a.png

They sit better than the jag rims. I had some Hub spacers sitting about from a while back and some wheel spacers so threw them on the front. Ended up maxing out the camber mounts as far positive as they would go. Looks to have given me a wider front track and has still kept a healthy degree of negative camber.

I won't pretend I know what I am doing when it comes to set up. I do what I think is right, drive the car then make adjustments to suit. I am sure a full on alignment would work wonders and is definitely something I will look into for future. For now it's mostly where I think it should be and isn't posing any issues.

It still needs a few things, most important is a welded diff. Believe me that is top priority but life has a funny way of interrupting my fun so for now it is what it is.

That about wraps it up for now, will definitely get the diff welded soon, get out to some legitimate drift days and continue to progress the car and myself as a driver. I have tried to keep the post tidy, hope it didn't bore you all. First ever build type thread so feedback welcome. I know I have probably missed some bits.

Updates to come when I man up and do some skid days.

Thanks for reading and if you see me about at any events, feel free to come say hi

Update: So nothing has changed with the car. Tested out the wider track/camber that I set up and it feels really good. Went out with some good buddies and did some stuff, which resulted in the below.

So that is 2 sets of tyres dead ! I still need to fit my rear camber arms that I bought ages ago. Diff is being dropped out soon and off to be welded. Will fit the camber arms then. I also have some lock spacers for the steering rack to fit so will do them and then get it 4 wheel aligned. All requires money though which I don't have (damn you bills) however soon it will get done and I can get to some events :)

As of right now it is off the road till these works are completed, I don't see the point in keeping it Taxed/insured so it's off to the barn till I can complete the final bits. Will probably add some spacers up front too. Thinking 25mm should do the trick. Then it will be where I want it. After that I can just spend my days skidding it, breaking it, fixing it. I do however have a E36 coupe (the green one) which is going to get built up. Unsure as to do a full on build for drifty goodness or turn it into a track car as Snetterton is only up the road :P

Anyway, that's all for now. Will update as and when stuff happens.

Enjoying this thread mate. This is what it's all about for me. Dicking about with cheap cars and enjoying them. Spot on so far.

Thanks man - I am actually dropping the diff out tomorrow, maybe fit my rack spacers and more lows. Also camber arms :) Will be out for some Skids Swaffham way but only watching. Will update this after tomorrows progress.

Nice one man. What ratio diff are you running? I've got a 323i with a 2.93 at the moment, the 3.15 felt a bit more eager in my 325i. Think I've found a 3.07 to weld though which should be a good compromise.

This has a 3.45 in it which I think is a pretty standard Small case ratio. Only a little 1.8 so has whatever came with from the factory. Seem to rip about alright. Wouldn't say it's much slower than my mates 318is - although I'm certain that isn't running right at the moment. Update to come on this although no real progress haha. I was felling lazy.

UPDATE:

So Its off the road at the moment. Been doing some deals on parts I don't need and managed to nab these off a friend.

F*cking HOO RAH !
After a set of these for ages and my mate cut me a deal at £60.00. These sit so well on untouched Arches and I am happy with the result. I may space the fronts out 25mm for a wider track but for now they can sit as is. Took the rear spring adjusters out and got her sitting level. Personally I am not a fan of rake and I can still get a jack under the thing so repairs/servicing/mods are that bit easier as I don't have to piss about with blocks etc to jack it up. I also avoid scrub on full lock under load which is good.

While practising some entries in Mexico I ended up with a funny feeling through the car. Nursed her home and had a look and I had ripped out both engine mounts. I always try replace worn out/broken bits with bits of the same or better quality (or at least newer). A quick chat with some mates and a search on the ole interwebs and I picked up something to sort it out.
17949906_10154932158721293_1083083184_o_zpss6bjvyex.jpg

God I love getting in parts, like a mini Christmas.
17967993_10154932158491293_246346929_o_zpsukfyz7rg.jpg

Anyway what I ordered were 2 x Febi E34 mounts. Same fitting as the E36 ones and solid rubber so definitely an upgrade over the stock E36 Hydraulic units. Spent a while bolting these in - was a bit of a pig as the engine had shifted about 2 inches to the right over the mounts. Had to use a jack on the gearbox to lift it and man handle it back to where it should be. I don't have any pics of it fitted but cant see much anyway. I'm sure you all know what engine mounts look like. Will see what they feel like when the car is back on the road.

I also had some rack spacers laying about. Thought I would have a go at fitting them.
17902787_10154932157916293_1215729372_o_zpsx459vyl2.jpg

Got the boot off and got the rack spacer on. Then went to adjust the rod ends to cancel out the Toe out they had given me. Tried for ages to get the track rod end to move but it just wasn't happening. As they are old and shit I will just order 2 new ones. Least then I know the front end has been overhauled a bit.

Had to see what sort of lock i was going to get so put it back together and checked the results.

Ignore the rust hole - Rust is lighter than carbon fibre don't you know ;)
17968733_10154932159876293_1577022557_o_zps3bdafei4.jpg

Not bad ! I don't have a before shot but they definitely give some extra lock and being 4mm they shouldn't bust the rack seals, time will tell. It all needs setting up right with the toe adjusted but so far I am happy with the results. I don't need mega lock so these should just give enough to save me from spins.

That about wraps it up for now. I need new inner/outer track rods which I'll order up next pay day. Then I can look at dropping that diff out. I will be installing new boots to the rack and thread lock the inner tie rods to avoid any issues moving forward :) I also need to install camber arms and get the diff welded, then the car will be about where I want it. Not a major drift build by any means and pretty standard stuff for an E36 but some choice mods to help me along the way.

Will update when more happens.

Thanks for reading.

looking good bud how does the 4 pot skids? and are they e34 bbs alloys?

Cheers man - to be honest I have only done some 3rd gear entries and 2nd gear slips but seems to skid okay. Basically my process is come in at top of 3rd, yank the wand, downshift to second, nail the throttle and apply steering input. I just have to use momentum rather than relying on outright power. Once you get it to come out it does stay out. Yes they are E34 BBS. Pretty common on the drift scene but I love them.

UPDATE:

So, a few things happened but not much on my own car ! :(

Anyway I thought I would throw up what I have been doing. I found I kept hitting my arm on the arm rest on the door - that was annoying so the door cards had to go. I look for replacements but people either wanted silly prices for some flat ally or supply was short and would mean a long wait. I like to think I am a practical fellow and in keeping with keeping costs down decided to make my own.

So I bought some 3.2mm Hardboard, got some Fabric off a friend and got busy with the glue. Results below.

18471028_120332000772417182_1452974515_n_zpsg1kg9weg.jpg

18470845_120332000763328085_2145490173_n_zpsywzxhend.jpg

Not perfect but not bad. I managed to retain the OEM Speaker, door pull and trim so it looks okay, still need to clean up the exposed metal bits. I also need to sort out some handles as door pulls. Unsure as to a cheap Ebay tow strap in yellow to match the seat/Harness or some slimline ally grab handles. Will sort it out soon.

That about sums it up for now. I did do some work to a mates car which I may throw up here to keep things interesting. Picked up more work so working most of the time now ! Still - more money for car parts :D
