Saturday
We went to bed around 3am.. and woke at 6am..
loaded up and headed to the track:
On route we decided to 'clear the cars throat' and give it a brief bust o speed.. apparently My driverside sideskirt was not happy with the situation and broke off for a rest at the side of the motorway!
Thank you Jack for stopping and retrieving it for me!
Morning:
I still had to fit some of the pipework to relocate the induction kit properly and sort a ton of other niggly issues.. I still had NO tyres on rims due to earlier fails.. so had to wait for tyre guy to turn up..Big thank you to
team green (bart/matt C/ mike C and Alan) who sorted the pipework issue while i was doing tyres, getting changed etc..
note the fire extingiusher clamp:
the culmination of all that was i was late into first practice and only managed a total of 2 laps. My first lap i basicly drove as i wanted to see how the car felt with its new grip etc.. a few clutch kick corner exits etc was about all. 2nd lap was pure grip fail.. the handbrake
REFUSED to lock using the technique i did with the s14 and the new-found extra grip and the grippy FC chassis did not help one bit!
came off the session very disheartened.
Matt carter then borrowed the car for the pros first session. did quite well and was fun to watch.. however apon returning it turned out he had managed to get a puncture in one of the R888's!
more flapping ensued.
Alan came to rescue lending me his Federal 595SS's to use on the front.. spacers needed swapping and other faffing about meant once again I was late to second session and AGAIN, only 2 laps. A bit better, but still grip racing most of it.
Yet more 'flikstRR flapping' and at point of giving up.
Afternoon Qualifying
At this point i have to thank
Mike ceffy and Jord. Jordan for his input between final practice and qualifying.. and Mike for calmin me down, not taking hte piss at all and suggesting a new way to enter the first corner now that i had a fail handbreak..
both of u.. and frankly some closed eyes, foot-to-floor speed and a 'fuk it all or nothing shouting' culimnated in the most SATISFYING 3 laps of my 'FC drift life'
it just 'worked'..
it wasnt perfect by any means
.. i just went for the clips best i could.. trying to keep the speed. and just get a clean exit from the course. Regardless of if I got top 8 or not... those laps were SO MUCH FUN.. it was enough to make all the crap from the morning dissapear. I also got a cool reaction from the other semi-pros on the hill watching it when i returned.
Bad-ass! Thank you all for your positive feedback.
Top 8!
I couldn't believe it when i was told i qualified 5th. (i think lol) I was so chuffed i dont think i even remeber where it was.. i just heard my name lol.
I went out with the same attitude i did my quals with.. just have fun, go balls out and see what happens..
UNFORTUNATELY.. i managed to do practice fine.. although not as good as my quals.. i was confident. So I thought screw it... I'll try even faster!..
I did it.. i held it.. i linked it.. right up to the last corner.. where I
managaed to hit 5th!! instead of 3rd.
was sooooo gutted.. thought I'd thrown it away.. so i was cursing a bit.. and thought right ill repeat that but focus on that last shift..
same again.. flat out.. held it.. linked it.. got to last corner. LOOKED AT THE SHIFTER..
then managed to hit 1st..
Matt Carter had warned me the box felt sloppy and i needed to fix it... but i had not had an issue at all till then. I was GUTTED. thrown it all away.. and so dissapointed..
I parked up and began to whine to the others in a comedy fashion how i had won 8th place.. till wayne stole it from me with a spinu set.. so i figured 7th was mine.
I couldnt believe it when i was called to podium!
i was practicaly speachless.. which in itself is an achievement! lol
chuffed to fuggin bits. A massive thank you to all involved both behind the scenes, sponsors, friends and team green. An even bigger thank you to Alex my fiancee for helping me in everyway..
its only a 3rd place, but to me its a victory after the speed this car was built. and the effort, time, blood, sweat and money put into it.
hopefully the first of many podiums.
