First drift car

Hi everyone, new guy here from the UK.

Currently 18 but i'm going to be 19 soon, and i'm planning on getting my first car then, but i want to get a something rwd so i can turn it sideways.. Could anyone recommend me any ? Im really interested in a e30/36 but the insurance seems like it will be killer. My budget for the car will be about 1k.

Another thing, how does one get into car tuning etc ? is there any college courses i could take ? I study a specific kind of engineering so i know how engines work, thermodynamics, statics, etc, But i have no idea where to start with cars, i don't really have access to a workspace where i could work on one myself which is kind of a bummer.

cheers for any help.

Have a look in the projects and build threads section on here for inspiration. With your budget and insurance issues I'd go for an mx5. You don't need to do anything other than weld the diff and you'll be sliding.

As for educating yourself, just get stuck in. When I was 18 I couldn't change brake pads. Now I'm 23 and could confidently do an engine swap, cam belt etc. Just learn as you go along and don't be scared to get stuck in.

Tom.

alright thanks. Mx5's are all like 1.6/1.8 though, pretty much the same as the bmw's. Do you not think this will be an issue with insurers ?

Well you'll struggle to find a RWD with enough grunt to get sideways less than a 1.6.
I'm sure there are examples that people can come up with but I can't.

MX5's are really expensive to insure unfortunately, worth getting a quote, but Im 33, my fully declared as a track car caged C34 laurel costs me £400, 1.6 MX5 lowered, wheels declared was £420!!!!! Got it down to £360 in the end but that's a lot for an old codger like me. It's to do with the amount of them that have been crashed, they are deemed high risk cars. Older stuff is cheaper, A sierra would be cheap and cost about £10 to fix most things. You can still get them for £500 ish but not for long. Drifting has wanged up RWD insurance dude, quite a lot. I had a strange conversation with Adrian Flux while insuring a Micra, If I caged it and did an engine swap, the insurance would be cheaper than a stock car!!!! It seems the insurance has gone mental!! Good luck dude.

Everyones cottoning on to cheap drifters.

Just search for cars locally under £1,000 on GumTree, eBay etc and see what pops up.

Lot's of various Volvos, Vaux Omegas, BMW 3/5 series, Merc's, Sierra's, MX5's, bla bla. Do some research.

I drive a e46 318 and goes well enough in the wet with open diff and insurance with a years no claims at 20 years old was only like £800

i cant even find any e30 316 estates online. Cheapest insurance i can find right now for a 3 series 1.8 316i SE is at 3.5k a year. Monthly is 320 quid which i am considering because i work out of the country for a good 4-6 month a year, i mean i will be almost completely skint because of it, but its not that bad because i'm still living with my parents.

madness. if you're scottish based, i assume you want to drift at driftland?

if so, why not get a track-only car to use at driftland. I offer storage 2 miles from driftland for £25pcm and we do return transport to Driftland events for £25pcm too. Arrive at driftland and it's there for you. Finish the drift day, park it up and we do the rest.

that way you can afford a sensible daily, and a decent powered drift car that you don't have to risk driving to and from events.

Yes that's what he said. Get a sensible road car. Store your drift car near the track - avoiding the insurance rape. Lots of guys doing it at the track just now.

that sounds pretty good actually, i just checked the prices for it which aren't that bad, pretty sure i remember some track being around 100 quid or so per drift day. Im probably going to go for this if i can afford 2 cars and the insurance. See the storage, are you allowed to work on your car there ?

Actual madness. Could always go on your parents insurance for a year? Maybe that could drop the price.

personally i want a bmw. I'm still going to put a fair amount of research into both and decide in the near future which is better for me. Only problem i have with the mx5 is its size, i'm about 6ft4 so i may struggle with it. lol

Have you drifted both ? any pros/cons with either ?

Your better off just driving a shitty hatchback for the first year and your insurance should drop. It'll probably still be fairly expensive in your second year but you'll have more choice of cars to insure at a "reasonable" price. When I was 18 I paid over 2k for a shite 1.1 106 and in my second year I was paying 1500 for a 2.0 ford capri

Yeah I see your problem. I'm 6"2 and only just fit. But it's perfect ;) I personally haven't ever driven either of them actually. But I know that the Mx5 is a very reliable and brilliant car to learn in.

This could be of some help if your going the E30 route.
