My first rwd and first attempts into drifting were with a 95 316i 1.6 and in the wet with an open diff it was still possible to get the back end out. as soon as you weld the diff it makes a world of difference. looking into the specifications the 1.8/9 options really dont offer much more in terms of power due to the extra weight and the economy is much worse. i had a load of fun in my 316 and only had to get rid of it because of the anti roll bar falling off the chassis.
