Line lock

A line lock if used with the brakes off will just stop the fluid pressure getting to the brake/s that the line its fitted to feeds, if you use it when the brake pedal is pressed then it will lock the pressure in.

For burnouts you have a line lock fitted to the brake line feeding the rear brakes, lock the line without the brakes pressed, so when you press the pedal it only pressurised the front brakes, leaving the rears free to spin and not burn out your brake friction material too.

The electric ones don't all work like that (although I guess some might) I've got one fitted and it's on the front brake likes so that to do a burnout you stamp on the brake pedal then hold the button for the line-lock and it keeps the pressure in the front lines when you take your foot off the brake pedal - you're then free to do the burnout without having to hit the brakes again.

However if you press the pedal while the lock is activated it's like a one-way valve - it only stops the pressure being released from the brakes, it'll still lets you apply it though.
