They do have cut outs in the pistons because its a 'GE' head, but this is only clearance for the valves when its timed up and revving highly!
Just picture this, when the belt broke some of the valves were still open but the crank and pistons were still moving in a non-syncronised movement with the valve train!(unless the clutch was dipped extremely quickly)! The only thing that could happen is for the pistons to ram the valves back up into the head! Usually bending or snapping the valve and if your really unlucky, fookin up a valve guide too!
