Evening all, after a visit to the pod this weekend this drifting malarky has got me going again .............so ...........any issues with an MX5 as a first car to play in ?

Iv driven one before and know how tail happy they are, but isnt there any issues with them being soft tops ?

Are full cages required to drift em or whats the idea ?

Thanks in advance all.

most tracks want you to have the soft to up
and if yours is anything like mine i couldnt see out of the back haha
hardtop is the way to go

and as for roll cage one of those roll hoops behind the rear seats is fine!

im breaking my mx5 atm and all the parts needed are on ebayy :D

Unless you drifting a loop the loop you'll do well to roll one when drifting.

The only issue I see is it gives 90% of people some lame disease where they think they need to turbo theirs just so they can drift it.

Get one, weld the diff, cheapy ebay coilovers, drivers bucket seat, drive it like a lunatic, and once you used to it you'll be smoking 3rd in the dry even in a standard engine one.

And make sure you punch yourself in the head at any time you think "this thing isn't powerful enough to drift", which might hurt, but will save you loads of money, loads of time, and mean you can spend it out there drifting and getting good rather than doing some wank build thread about your half arsed turbo conversion like most others do.

My thoughts too tbh, but you know what "Elf & Safety" numpties can be like!!

From my experience of driving one before it felt like when you used to drive the McDonalds car park in your front wheel drive car with McDonalds trays under the back wheels!!

Do they Drift ok ish without the welded diff ? Reason being it will more than likely be a road legal car and driven to events as i dont have a good track record with car trailers, and methinks a welded diff on the road may be an issue.

If it has a open diff then they dont fucking drift at all. There wank with a open diff. I know as ive got one and havent had chance to weld the diff yet. Dont know about the lsd ones.

Just weld the diff. Why would be a welded diff be a problem on the road?

This exactly.
Welded diff will be fine on the road, I've been running one since Feb and not once has it stepped out on me unexpectedly. If anything you need to push it HARDER to get it to break, and then it'll stay out easy enough.

Thankyou for that valuable input, i had assumed they would be a liability on the road with a welded diff.

Cheers, good to see both sides of the fence one after another.

hilarious !

If your MX5 feels like you have trays under the rear wheels you need new tyres and alignment done.

You can also get a torsen diff from a 1.8 MX5, but you are looking at £250-£300 for one. .

Never driven with trays under the back wheels, but if your MX5 drives like that something is wrong.

And welded diffs on dailys are fine unless your gay. My MX5 had it, as have about 10 other dailys ive had, inc my current Skyline.

I have two 5's one completely standard and one turbo (don't hurt me lol) the standard one is hard to drift but the turbo has an lsd and its easy peasy to get out. Have fun and be safe out there :-)

i have a 1.6na and slammed on hsd's steps out easy peasy in the wet and i have an open diff atm. it is harder in the dry however but 2nd gear clutch kicking does get it to swing but doesnt stay out all that well. im looking to invest in a welded diff and mine is used as a daily :)

having had several Na mx5s and now having turbo one i think these are definatly driftable to do it on the right scale tho i think the following are definatly a must

a good diff
extra lock
Turbo power
Hydro hand brake

SORTED !! :)

happy sliding
