Mx5 drift

Hey guys i will be attending a drift experience thing with learn to drift very soon and if all goes well i will be attempting to buy my first drift car. :)

Looking about the only thing i could afford to insure would be a MK1 MX5 on my parents policy as i would only be using it at weekends to go to drift events.

Being 17 insurance isn't particularly friendly to us 17 year old lads but my mates dad is thinking of selling his MX so i have asked for him to keep hold of it for me until this drift day.

My question is will it drift in stock form ( its the 1.6 ) and i want to know if it will drift because if i have to put the likes of a turbo on it it will shoot my insurance through the roof and mean i cant aford it as well as my daily beat up polo for getting to work and college.

Any suggestions or advice much appreciated guys.

it will drift yes. you do however really need a diff of some form, torsen lsd or a welder and lots of psi in the rear tyres

thanks initial j as long as it will drift ok stock may put a welder in it and possibly a set of springs

blackett that first one is what i was looking for need to remember to use that funny search function on here :P

also the fronting isnt a thing as at the min my dad doesn't have a car when i start using the polo as a daily so he will be using the mx5 for his jaunt to work and back during the week so appreciate the look out but i wont be fronting it officer blackett :)

thanks Stavros i cant see me being amazing ( well to begin with atleast )

really want a S14 but that is defiantly off the cards for the minute having got a quote for one on ebay an s13/14/15 will definatly have to wait until im about 21 and have a few years no claims under my belt

i think i will see how this drift day goes you never know i may be pro already ;)

but yeah i think i will just see how things go at the drift day and then see what happens in regards to money and what i can afford

coilovers help a lot as well if you can afford them

however try get a mk1 mx5 1.6 which iirc are around 115bhp

i took a mk2 1.6 round lydden hill on saturday with a wanky restricted 80 odd hp and it was seriously hard work! but do able... ish

thanks initial j yeah i will just get a set of cheapish coilovers if i can

i think my mates dad does have the 115 hp version as he is always saying that if u aren't careful at lights u can light the rears quite easy is there a way to defiantly tell if its the 115 version without taking it to the likes of a dyno

As long as it's earlier than 1994 or an Import it wont be the 90bhp one.

And both are slow anyhow.

You wont be able to blame lack of power for sucking ass for a long long time, trust me.

your confidence in me has totally gone then Stavros :P

yeah i know im gonna suck for ages but its all bout having fun im not in it for money or anything i just wanna have fun and develop my skills

No, my point is, don't worry about how much power you have, even the lowest amount you won't be able to make full use of drifting for a long time, and learning to will make you a fuck sight better than even a lot of people who compete but can't do shit unless they got a ton of power under their right foot.

ah i see your point now yeah i suppose it is better to learn with just enough power rather than have power like in formula drift of 800 horsepower thanks Stavros like i say i wanna do it for fun and if i get good maybe enter some comps but again i only wanna do it coz it is fun

Just have fun, and resist fannying about for more power, save money for drifting, tyres, suspension, seat, diff, lock, etc. You'll have more fun and be a lot better driver.

Standard apart from a set of rack spacers and coilovers. Mx5s are great cars to drift and soo rewarding when you get it right. I almost prefer it over my s13.

you've a lovely set of eyes :)

yeah i think this is defiantly the road i'm going down at the minute as i cant afford anything else but i would like a s13/14/15 in the future when ive a bit more money and insurance isn't a small fortune and im a bit more serious into drifting

Jalopnik and driftworks agree on one thing: the answer is always miata
They're great little cars, get one for yourself! I'll have one for sale shortly
