MX5 NB Skidder:..

Budget Drifter

Drift Terrorists
So, I feel now is the time to start one of these threads. I haven't felt the need to do so for a while now, due to the fact my car is gay and un-interesting. But since I have done a couple of bits and bats to it, I thought I would share with you.

I bought a 1999 mk2 (nb) Mazda MX5. I had a rev4 mk2 MR2 before and couldn't keep up with the insurance because I'm a skint student, so I bought the 5 (MR2 group 16, MX5 group 13).

Never really thought about drifting much, and booked an oulton park drift day around 6 months ago, just out of interest. This resulted in muchos grins and being hooked to the sport of drifting.

Skidding it stock.

The first thing I chucked my money at was a couple of drift days. Then felt the need to get some proper bits done to the car. So I put the K&N cone of the MR2 on it, bought some RACELAND ebay coilovers cheapo, and the cheapest polybushes to shove on.
Whilst the wheels were off, i painted them matt black.

Next up was some £1 stud adapters from Wickes, that I used for bonnet spacers.

After this, I plucked up enough courage to go to a Buxton drift day (if you haven't been, get there asap, it's awesome) and skidded on proper tarmac instead of oulton park's slippy stuff.

This ended up with me qualifying for the British Open Drift Championships at Mallory Park in September 2010! One of THE most excited times of my life :D

So now I know I need to get better at skidding to do well at Mallory, i stripped the interior out:

Then got a lightweight bucket seat in (bride)

After all stripping and lighter aftermarket bits... the car now weighs 970kg with 85KG driver (MOT man) and half tank of fuel.

24th April saw my 23rd birthday, and my amazing girlfriend bought me a custom straight pipe back box. (LOUDEST I've heard. very BRAP BRAP!!)

So that's me. Ill keep this updated as and when I feel it needs it.

thanks a lot. It's a marmite thing...

Also it might have failed the MOT due to the possibility it will burn perdestrians if they walk into it

lol keep it away from drunk teenagers too, they might mistake it for a urinal :P

You have an amazing girlfriend indeed :O

She is indeed...

Yeah I am still a student, just handed in my thesis today, so looks like alcohol poisoning is on the horizon this weekend! The money that usually funds typical student's going out every night is what funds my skidding. I don't go out as much as a typical student...

ahhhhhh right awesome, Im in the same situation as you, kinda, i dont care what sacrifices I have to make, I wanna get out ther and skid! :D

haha if only that would make me enough money to fund myself, that would be bloody awesome hhaa, doubt it tho sadly :(
Keep up the good stuff tho mate!

nice seat next thing you should do is get rid of the bloody steering wheel in my book there horrible to drive with and even worse to drift with.

This is well cool. I couldn't drive with the standard wheel kept on hitting my knees. I student speced it right up with bits I aquired, got a impreza boss and the old wheel from my cousins rally car lol

Thanks for the nice comments. Wasn't expecting that.
I haven't got a problem with the wheel, whats so bad about it? I'd like an aftermarket one but funds don't allow :D

cage is the next thing indeed... only it's very very expensive.

Going out to take a vid of the exhaust now for that guy up top.

Steering wheels are about personal preference. If you're happy using that one then I say stick with it. No sense in changing things for no reason.

Rollcages are expensive, especially if you get something like a Hard Dog one, but I suppose you can't put a price on safety. Plus an added bonus is that it'll help stiffen the chassis and improve the handling slightly. I fyou get a bolt-in cage and install it yourself it keeps the cost down and isn't too much work.

Oh, if i were to go the cage route, it would be a CAGE, full cage :D

Also i do all the work myself anyways so fitting a cage or bar shouldn't be too hard.

Have you got a cage/bar? and did you notice a difference in stiffness/handling?

Cheers

cool, ill look into it then in the near future.

It's raining out, so the only exhaust clip i have is in car.

It's weird, the camera couldn't handle the noise so it quietened it down after first couple of seconds.

Ill get some out of car, and revving etc at a later date.
