So, now i'm getting more and more into skidding the MX5, I thought I needed more steering angle to hold more impressive skids :thumb-up:
I bought these:
Steering angle spacers | Hardware | Driftworks
They are 3mm wide, and fit fine on an MX5.
So this is what I did:
(BTW, I take no responsibility for damage to your cars, or injury due to this modification. Use your head, and only do this is you understand the risks involved)
First jack up the front end of the car.
I use a block of wood on the front sub-frame bit. Because my car is lower than stock, i need to raise it a tad on the ramps to fit the jack under.
Then get your axle stands in. What i do here is drop the car onto the axle stands and pump the jack a little so the jack takes a small percentage of the weight of the car. (not too much
)
You will need to remove the under tray. This is held on by numerous 10mm nuts that are simple to find.
Then identify your steering rack.
Undo the clip at the little end of the rack (wheel end) and slide that out of the way. Then take of the large clip at the fat end. Then slide the dust cover out of the way.
This reveals this:
Once you are here, you need to peel back the 'locking' tab that wraps around the inner tie rod.
Once this is done, get a big ass spanner and undo the inner tie rod.
Once all the way out, you can now take off the tab you peeled back and put on your spacer.
Once you have done this, put a decent amount of high strength locktite, or I used hardcore bearing stuff.
Then nip it back up.
Now you need to compensate for the spacers on the tie rod end near the wheel. The spacers used in this thread are 3mm, however the tab taken off is around 1mm. So 4mm needs to be pulled in.
I made a mark using the spacer as a template, un-did the locking nut, and wound it in to this mark. Then wind the rod into the tie rod end until the locking nut hits the rod end... Then nip it up.
And that's it. Load more angle for skidding for dirt cheap.
Voila...
