Nissan 200SX S13 SR20DET | Performance Road & Drift Project

Hello everyone !

My name is Octav (nickname XS - don't ask it's 12 years old so it stuck I guess) and while I've been reading the DW forum for a while I haven't really participated ... yet.

I'm warning you from the start that I shoud've been born a writer (a bad one at that), so some pacience when reading my posts is recommended. Or you can jump straight to the pics. I also want to apologize in advance for any mistakes I make, english is not my native tongue :)

Some of you might know the car since I bought it from MC Mate who already had a topic here. My goal is to participate in the 2011 Romanian Drift Championship and if I'm not a total tool at drifting hopefully the complete King of Europe Drift Series in 2012.

In regards to the car I have roughly 3 months to get it up to a decent competitive level so that the only weak link is the driver and I can only fault myself and my (lack of) skills if things don't go as planned. Because I live in a country where motor racing is not exactly well developed and we have no tracks and no practice areas I will also need to set the car up so that it can be driven around, it won't be a full-on 100% stripped down track car but a blend geared more towards competition though. At the level we're competing here in Romania and my skillset a full-on track car is not necessary this year in my opinion.

Okay, so let's start slow, historically and methodically since this is the first of my cars I'm actually writing about.

Me and my associate Emanuel got two BMWs for practice until we would be good enough to go japanese. We went the german way because jap cars are very rare and expensive here, parts are impossible to come by and as I mentioned earlier we have nowhere decent to practice legally so we would have to use crappy unused back-roads. That way when (inevitably) we'd crash them it wouldn't be a fortune a weeks to get them back on their feet. At least that was the plan. We still own the two cars of which we'll keep the E28 535i and sell the E36 325i (replaced by the Nissan). Emanuel will keep the E28, maybe do a V8 swap or twin turbo it (since we have most of the kit) but this is another story and another thread.

After doing a few training laps in the last championship round this november, it was clear that modding the E36 to be competitive would require tons of fabrication, a V8 swap and a lot of time which I don't have. I then decided to buy a RHD car from the UK, preferably one that already has a few mods so that I can have more money in the budget for the rest.

I narrowed it down to a S14 or a R33 GTS-t and after quite a bit of looking around I found a very decent S14 with good mods on it at a very decent price. I had my plane ticket already reserved when I found MC Mates S13 sale ad by sheer luck. It had the SR20DET swap which made me consider it (no CA for me thank you very much) and it brought back all the love I had for the 200sx S13 fastback shape when I was a kid. The price was right, it was registered and it had the wheel on the right side (for us) which makes it a whole lot safer on the road.

After about 36h of sleep depravation (it seems it's the only way I buy cars lately) I was on my way to Bucharest to see the car along with my buddy Emanuel. Long story short, it fit the bill just fine, the list of mods on it alone made it worth it and the fact that Razvan (MC Mate) was running in similar circles as myself and a very trustworthy character sealed the deal.

To the disappointment of the towing cables we had prepared the car made the 400km journey just fine, be it at ~60mph outer and 35mph inner city speeds. No ... we have no bloody highways.

A short description of what the state of the car was when I got it :

- straight and untouched chasis with no accident damage
- very little rust on the body (weird for a S13 of this age that was not very looked after in recent years), and with decently straight lines
- SR20DET Red Top engine in top condition, no smoke, no knocks or other weird noises
- gearbox in working order but it does whine a bit in a couple of gears.
- all the bushes were shot, especially the rear subframe bushes, the car couldn't put any power down unless handled with the utmost care. I didn't mind though since poly bushes would have to be used anyway (already ordered)
- the suspension is a custom job and while it might be ok for drifting on a smooth surface it's far from being a good setup. It's pretty much almose welded to be honest. The shocks have been hardened & shortened and the springs have been shortened and strengthened by re-heating (not sure how to explain this)
- the rest, technically in good nick, loses a little bit of oil from gearbox, steering rack and diff but nothing to worry about, the right headlight is a bit lazy so I can't use the sleepy eyes yet, from left blinker smashed, many interior trim pieces missing and other small stuff like this.

What's been done to it so far :

- properly screwed about half of the screws on the car which for some reason or another were loose (okay, I'm exagerating, about 1/4)
- put in a ton of missing screws (Razvan was really into saving weight I guess hehe j/k)
- aligned the front fenders and hood as much as it was possible (they were not original Nissan parts probably)
- filled it up with antifreeze instead of aqua vera so that my new little SR will not have a problem with the coming winter
- changed the clutch liquid (which was black as fuck) with DOT4 liqued and properly bled the system. (sometimes the clutch stuck to the floor, it seems fine now)
- fitted the rear subframe aluminum collars, it's now solid and able to put down power.
- temporarily painted black by us in the garage. Looks like crap but it wasn't ment to look nice because it's going to be redone anyway. I just needed the car to have the same color everywhere so that I can register it in my name.
- refitted most of the interior trims Razvan removed and completed the car as per stock with many borrowed parts from a mate so that it can pass inspection. I will keep the front of the interior because there's just not enough weight advantage in removing it related to the loss of comfort.

I'll continue in the next post. I have about 4 so please be pacient and don't reply untill I'm done so there's some continuity to this thread.

Cheers,
Octav

Now the car is waiting for the engine change approval (you don't want to deal with Romanian bureaucracy).

I've also got a pair of 17" training rims made by a company I never heard of from Ireland (STR RS-GT) but should fit me just fine since they were quite cheap and I'm planning on switching to 5x114.3 instead of 4 till the season starts anyway. Unfortunately though I didn't know the stock wheel nuts would be useless (won't fit) so I'm ordering 40 19mm thick nuts from the US. I will refurbish the wheels and paint them a dark desaturated gold so it goes well with the black color of the car.

The short-term plan is to make sure all my suspension and articulation is done properly, buy the electronics that will later allow me to squeeze more hp from the motor and small interior-exterior essentials. I don't know if I'll afford to reach my power goals till spring since as you all know it takes a bit of money to achieve reliable hp, but worst case scenario a 25% increase over the stock power figure should suffice. While I initially had no plans for an exterior, I think I will make a custom wide body kit for it because we've been meaning to get into the fabrication business for a while and it would be an interesting exercise/test. After the body kit it will all be covered in semi-matte black vinyl so that we can easily fix/replace it when it gets damaged.

As far as the motor goes, the final target is somewhere around 350 reliable rwhp with a quick spooling turbo like the GT2871R .64 on stock internals. If I'll break it I'll get a 2.2 - 2.4 stroker kit depending on the budget or go the RB way (mounted further back and lower) for that nice 6 pot sound and torque.

Here are a few pics with the work we've done so far after I got it (well, quite recently so not much work), then I will say a few words about the history, the mods the car currently has on and all the parts I've already ordered so far. After the financial situation improves a bit I will order the second batch of parts next month.

Sanded the thing down by hand, I promise you I will not do this again too soon. It's the sort of thing that sounds much better in the morning than in the evening when you can barely move.

A little bit of our E28 is visible in the back (within the whole ghetto looking surroundings) :

005.JPG

Took care of a few small bumps and scrapes, didn't do a great job but most of them are gone.

010.JPG

Suit up ! Ready for spray.

016.JPG

A bit upset it doesn't look that great. We weren't expecting it to with our total ~150 euro costs but it would've been nice if we were wrong. Hopefully after a nice deep polish it will be much smoother. The pain was shit, our compressor was shit and also leaked a bit of water vapor in the air and most importantly we had no serious experience as painters so ... that's that.

018.JPG

019.JPG

The front bumper was a test bed for a coat of clear. Unfortunately because of the crappy quality of the pain it reacted with the clar and voila, major 3d orange peel effect. At the time I though it would be cool to do the entire car like this. I then came to my senses in a few seconds ...

We started refitting the interior that was previously stripped out

027.JPG

Tried to clean up the engine bay a bit (at least to a common sense level, it was diiirty) but didn't think to take a before shot so I know I made a difference but I can't show it.

029.JPG

Outside, finally in the light. I can't wait to get rid of the fugly square bumper. Until then at least I need to find a blinker (tougher job than you'd think in Romania).

033.JPG

The only exterior "hint" this is not a car heading for the breakers yard.

034.JPG

Failed attempt to fit the 17" rims accompanied by a lot of swearing. You really can't do squat on the stock large sidewall 15s.

Since that day I was at the garrage with my daily driver (2009 Ford Mondeo) I though I'd shoot a few pics with the two main financial black holes in my life. One through depreciation the other though "investments" (as we all like to say to ourselves).

Now, because this is not just another S13 and it has a bit of a history (celebrity owner etc.) I thought it would be nice to quickly go through that history.

Masina a fost produsa in 1990 and sold in Switzerland. By the way it looks in older pictures I'd say the original owner took pretty good care of it. Then it was imported in Romania and that kind of changed.

It was imported in 1998 in our myrific country for the artist Mihaela Cernea from the well known (here) band Class by a friend of hers. I was fortunate enough to like their music so this is a very nice bonus for me.

In 1999 it was stolen from her and found by the police a week later with the engine busted (which was then repaired of course).

Things went well for Mihaela and she got the SUV she wanted back in 2001 so the Nissan changed hands again.

The subsequent two owners changed a few engines and stuck a lot of dough in it but at some point or another things went south and the car didn't receive the care it deserved.

In March 2009 it was purchased by Razvan (MC Mate) and in the time he owned it he tried to get the crappy CA18DET to work properly to no avail (and a lot of money spent) but eventually swapped in a proper SR20DET Red Top and hopefully this will change the "mechanical failure" rate of the car.

He also wanted to get the car ready for our national drift championship, he reinforced the entire front end and put quite a few performance parts on it. I was fortunate in this matter since all the money he spent is money I don't have to spend myself. He only used it for training in two events so all the parts he uprated are pretty much still new.

With this ocation I'd like to thank Razvan for all the help and advice he privided, he's a great guy you can count on.

Please check out his topic to view the past history and details about his mods :
http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-car-projects-builds/83149-s13-drift-project-romania.html

On the 8th of November 2010 it came into my possesion as the head weekend mistress. I can promise you it will stay with me for a loong time, I love the S13 fastback look to bits.

Although you shouldn't mix love with pleasure, I think I'm starting to fall in love with my little mistress. Enough so that she can squeeze me dry financially hehe.

To complete this quick history lesson, I need to attach a few pics :

Transformation done by Razvan in just 4 photos :

09.jpg

Older pics of the car and an article with Mihaela Cernea centered around her car (at the time) :

10.jpg

Si, of course, a funny clip in which the car is the "star". A friend of hers lures her into a gypsy infested post-apocalyptic location and they pretend to steal her car. I don't know what year it is but I'm guessing 'round 2000
icon_smile.gif
.

And a couple of old videos from her band (old but still sound nice, you might like them) :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x61OLW23ZtQ]YouTube - CLASS - NA NA NA (english subtitles)
.. you can find more if you like them through related and/or searches, they have quite a few videos

Now that we're through with the boring history lesson it's time to get to more serious stuff, the mods ...

Besides the above the following mods have been done :

- custom made stainless steel turbo-back exhaust (with no flexible link, I will install one since it's already losing exhaust gasses right before the turbo, not cool)
- electric fan in front of the radiator
- silocone hoses where possible
- battery relocated to the inside of the car instead of the rear seats.
- new slave clutch cylinder
- new Motul oil everywhere (engine, box, diff)
- custom made seat rails for the Recaro seat so that it's as mounted as low down as possible (as we all know S13 FB has limited head room especially for a larger person wearing a helmet)
- custom rebuilt (hardened) shocks for a teeth breaking ride
- H&R front springs
- custom modified rear springs (hardened, re-cured)
- welded open differential

Weight saving operations :

- removed rear seats
- removed most interior trim (of which I put back most of the front ones)
- completely removed any sound insulation
- removed rear wiper and water reservoir

I might be missing a few things but if that's the case they're not terribly important.

Next : The first batch of parts I've already ordered and waiting for.

Here is the Driftworks part of first batch of parts. Hopefully these will arrive in ~ a week.

Next comes the stuff I odered from the US, mostly electronics and small non-essential stuff that didn't have to be top quality.

So .. the electronics. I chose this path as oposed to off the shelf ECU maps mostly because I have a hobby in regards to how engines work and how to properly tune them. I've read my share of documentation and instead of going stand-alone from the begining (not enough confidence in my skills yet) I went half-way with a piggy back that will be fun as a hobby and still safe enough for me to tinker with. With the help of the profec, wideband sensor and a qualified engine tuner I know I hope we'll it set up nicely.

I know many will not agree with my choice on this matter which is why I explained it's mostly to fuel my hobby and help me get to be confident enough to tackle stand-alones like MS.

And a few more bits :
- Clear diamond headlights (cheepo solution untill I can fabricate some nice sleepy eye Hella projector ones)
- Fugly tail lights which I hope to customize to somewhat of a Uras look (semi-cheepo)
- Deep dish steering wheel (no name) that should keep me driving untill I can afford a nice Nardi Deep Corn.
- "F1 style" mirrors (bicycle technology hehe), not for the look obviously since they're fugly but to save a bit of weight over the stock electric mirrors.
- Two 20 wheel nut kits with a 19mm exterior diameter
- 2x four point harnesses with shoulder pads (Recaro)
- drift spin turn knob
- aluminum steering bushing

Unfortunately this is it for now, I obviously have a huge list of things (GT2871R, injectors, catch tank, oil cooler, tripple radiator w/2 fans, Z32 AFM or MAP Sensor from Greddy etc etc.) I need to get but I just ran dry on the money side of things so I need to wait a bit and regroup. I will not post any parts I didn't already order because anyone can make plans, it only matters what you do.

Thank you for bearing with me so far, I know I'm more anal than the germans when details are concerned.

I want to have a hybrid suspension/articulation geometry (R33/S14/S13) so as it stands now I will look for a R33 GTS-t from the UK so that I can swap everything I need (brakes, rear hubs, rear subframe, front lower arms etc etc.) I will keep you guys posted on that since it's not exactly crystal clear to me either.

@nissanr34cal Thanks man :)

These are not parts but since I'm starting out professionally and not a bit of childs play in the parking lot, I need to do it properly and start reading. Especially since I don't have the luxury of time or experimenting on the track at this point :

02-books.jpg

I also thought I would contribute with a chart I made when considering all the posibilities for my drift car project. I looked around for something like this for a while and no dice so I spent a few hours on it. I will add more cars and variables time permitting but hopefully it will help a few people out :

That's about it for now, I will update this topic as soon as some of the parts arrive and we start tinkering with the car.

All the best,
Octav

Not sure if this is fine or not, but from time to time I'll post some nice music vids by romanian bands (only those that I like and are in english of course).

Many of our artists really work their butts off but rarely get enough international recognition, so a bit of free advertising might be in order. As a former part-time DJ myself and amateur music maker (loong time ago) I can appreciate their work and I think many songs area worldwide material but haven't been heard of.

Here are today's four :

Morandi - Angels (2007) :

Tom Boxer & Anca Parghel ft. Fly Project (Anca Parghel - older lady - was a great romanian voice but sadly passed away recenly, may she rest in peace) :

Inna - Hot (2009) :

Play & Win - Only (2009) :

(You can also treat this as a way of me stalling till I get some stuff done to the car hehe).

Thank you !

My first DW order arrived yesterday, I'm quite happy/impressed with the quality of all parts except for the filler cap which is not exactly to my liking but it will do for now since it's not exactly an important issue.

To all you SR20DET experts, please give me a bit of advice on some performance related choices I need to make : http://www.driftworks.com/forum/technical/131303-another-sr20det-power-grades-help-thread.html

I'd really appreciate any sort of contribution, ideas etc.

Here's a few pics, might be useful for those that want to see how their products would look like before they order :

And here's a little "trailer" for a movie I'm hoping to make given I have enough editing time and footage. It was an occasion to see if I still remember anything from 8 years ago when I briefly worked in making TV Ads. Rusty as heck, that's for sure, but it was fun doing it.

Hello guys, I'm post some updates with what's been happening in the meantime, translated from my posts in the main Romanian tuning forum.

=========
22-12-2010
=========

I finally got the left signal sorted, it was driving me nuts seeing it broken up.

106.jpg

I also got a set of S13 facelift wheels with MS tyres and I'll find a few more winter tyres. As you well know the S13 has a really light rear so for snow practice these are mandatory along with quite a bit of weight over the rear end.

105.jpg

I also left the new replacement rubber "seals" (I don't remember the correct term in english) at the garage because the old ones are shot. These will be changed along with the Tein tie rods & ends whenever there's time. The rest of the suspension/articulation will be fitted in the spring because I don't want to screw them up in bad weather conditions especially since in winter hitting the car is a bit more likely.

107.jpg

We also rented an additional garage for our projects and we're not in the process of refurbishing it, there's quite a bit of work involved as you can see, but it should fit a 4 arm elevator and another car for some body or other simple work. There's also some pseudo storage/office space in the back where we can have a few cold ones after a hard days work.

Finance management is killing me, there's so many things to do till spring including getting a van and two car transport platform but hopefully we'll be able to get most of what we have planned done.

The master clutch cylinder just went, so no more practice for a little while until the new one arrives.

Cheers,
Octav
