Oh dear, what have I done?

:D :D :D what a bastid of a job so far.. I tried to do all the difficult bits of insulation removal today, so after work this week all I've got left to do is passenger footwell, driver footwell, driver seat area, and one rear arch, then out comes the petrol and plenty plenty scrubing, then the sanding, priming and painting..

Mat, whats the yellow stuff that appears to overlap panel joins? did you get rid of it?

Need a rollcage ASAP, anyone know of any good but cheapish cages for 14's other than the Cusco Saftey 21? I'm going to see how much one is to import, but it's pretty damn heavy..

Also, does anyone have a good cheap contact for sheet carbon fibre? I need to replace the door cards to fit the cage..

Im not mat but i didnt get rid of that yellow stuff.. a) its fecking rock hard and b) im sure its there for a reason, perhaps on chassis joins or something.. Its all inside the AE86 and the Continental GT. In some places on my 86 i hit it with a chisel and a bit of it did come off, but i didnt intentionally remove any if i could help it... Then i use petrol and some of that scotch brite is it? Wire wool type stuff that you clean dishes with? I didnt bother sanding, i just use a layer of Hammerite Straight to Metal in Black (rust proof stuff, spray or paint) and then used aerosol plastikote matt black, thats really nice and easy to get a good finish with. Seems to stick well also, takes knocks etc. If S14 is anything like AE86 youre in for a treat when you do the passenger and driver footwell.. Oh yes.. It was about 2cm's thick on the 86! Thankfully it was old and welded on the old black one so it ripped out nicely but i think S14 might be hard work cus its newer.

Im going to be stripping the rest of my new 86 over my holidays, gotta take the cage back out tho... Should be fun. :( I'll be masking off all my windows and doing all the inside in that hammerite/plasticote combo. I think i'll keep the door cards in, but i know its insanely loud without rear seats...

All i can think for Roll Cage is Glen but it wouldnt really be fast delivery unless you paid outa your behind :(

Have fun!

What you have done is ruined your chances of taking home the lovely women of Birmingham :p

Why not just get a cage done over here? Would probably work out easier. I would be tempted to get an FIA approved one, because if you dont and then someone in a couple of years has that reg for competing then thats going to be a bitch!

I know, I think it lost a bit of the lady appeal with the stickers anyway :D cant afford a £1200 weld in and loads of time off the road, a bolt in will do for now, and I can sell it when I need the FIA :)

Paz yellow stuff will stay, I pressume it doesn't react when painted then?

I got no reactions on mine and the cars at work have it painted over no worries.. Should be fine :)

right then mother biathches :D ok so the yellow stuff. its basically sealant and stops moisture getting in the car. (you really think you car is held together with yellow goo? haha) anyway, remove it, its horrid stuff, the best way is to get a brand new super sharp chisel and scrape it off. wont take too long but it is a pain in the ass. S14 floor pan is double skinned, all the strength is in the outer skin (sills, etc...) so dont worry about loosing strength. water will seep in though, so im going over all my joins with nice black silicone sealant.

to clean the surfaces, use white spirit, but... make sure you get off as many bits of the deadening left. a nice brittle scouring pad will do the job and also scotches the surfaces enough to take paint nicely. Primer it with spray filler if you want a super sexy finish. i used regular high build primer, which does the job well too. plasticote matt black is great. i used 5 cans of halfords own matt black large size arosols, but then i did the boot a bumper and wing mirrors too. maybe 3 cans will do for you.

footwells are the worst part to do :( good luck! haha

finally, you can also remove a hell of a lot of nuts/bolts plastic clips etc... which will save even more wieght. phil, seriously, wait till the works done and wiegh how much you have taken out! its crackers :D haha did you see how i had re-wired my rear looms? you can get rid of most of the gay brackets and wanky plastic clips, they do rattle a lot if you dont. basically, take time to make sure everything is bolted down real nice for the best results.

I would reccomend a panel to separate the boot and cockpit, this is something im intending to do and will keep noise levels in the car down. also, the metal is quite comfy if you sit in it :D haha so i was going to get some stick on foam panels and make some kind of seat thing for bitc... i mean additional passengers.

oh also, im up for getting a cage too maybe depending on cost, but, having spent time working with brett doing F1 carbon gear... DO NOT GET CARBON DOOR CARDS, if you do stack it and split the carbon it basically turns into evil needle splinter type crap that REALLY hurts and also WILL go septic if it stays in your skin. also, for some reason, carbon will not work its way out of your skin and you will have lots of black marks like tattoo ink. seriously, i still have carbon in my hands now. urgh.

anyway, love and i hope that helps?

 dude, how long did that take you?

Spent about 5-6 hours so far, but thats with removing the interior etc aswell..

BTW 4 bags of ice from iceland help the job along well nicely :)

Mat i think I'm going to keep the yellow stuff, it's not heavy and paint will stick to it so no probs.. Word up on the CF door panel tip, I didn't think about that.. Maybe I'll just leave it open and have a little switch panel out of carbon..

water will seep in though

Eep. Glad i left it in my 86's then. Water = Rot :( And i found petrol did the job in half the time of white spirit and got you considerably higher, also in half the time (leave doors shut to be overcome by fumes faster.. erm...lol).

yeah water is bad...

BTW I am trying to keep every little bit I take out, so I can weigh it all to measure the difference..

I have also just been out in the car, and jesus, it's incredibly different  it corners on rails, and feels twice as fast in a straight line, I can't beleive I didn't do this before. it does hurt the ears a little though :D

Phil,

I have been speaking to a guy in Belgium who does carbon work and one off stuff, and seems to do it quite cheap.
If you like I could ask about making s14a door cards and other stuff??

Haha

I remember that job it sucked I used a hair dryer to heat up the tar stuff and tried to peel it off in one each piece at a time. I used real good de-greaser to get rid of all of the sticky stuff only thing was the paint reacted with it and the bodyshop had to paint the inside of my car again.

:) Taking the plunge eh Phil? I'm SO tempted to start stripping the damn car down but I need to find a little daily drive first... good luck and report back with how it goes.

hehe, this is still going to be my daily drive for as long as I can deal with it :D

Jay, I can't remember the last time I had so much fun :( lol :D

Morf cheers dude, but Mats right, in an accident, massivesplinters of carbon might not be a good thing :D

how long ago did i tell you it made a HUGE difference...

maybe you'll belive me about the handbrake thing now too? you know im ghetto man, i stripped mine cus its cheaper than buying the go faster bits. your brakes will suddenly improve and your handbrake will start working too... your gonna love it :D xxx

actually I forgot to mention, the brakes were bloody awesome on the test drive, better than they ever were

Mat I said I'd never have stickers, now I've got them (I actually said never unless they were my own, so thats okay ;)) I also said I didn't need to strip it, but I'm biting the bullet, and doing it properly now.. why not ay :D

dude, if you need any help with the wires or anything just gimmie a shout. dont move the airbag unit tho. afaik if you disconnect it or feck with it, then it does strange things to the car a buggers the ecu...? can anyone confirm this?

which wires? I know theres plenty.. did you reroute them or something?

airbag cu, that's gotta go, I do recall something about it being connected with the ecu, I've got a power FC it'd better not fuck with that..

Airbags do fuck with ECU's.

A mate of mine had a small accident in his company car and the airbag went off. The ECU had a fit, and shed loads of lights came on the dash.

If you are going to take it out have someone professionally do it. People that install them have to have an explosives license, so this isn't something you should mess about with. Pay the money and play it safe imo!
