Porsche 944

As most of you will have probably realised, I sold my lovely mazda :( with the intention of buying a 200SX. What I’ve found is that most S13s are either modified beyond my tastes, or falling to pieces. Sure the odd minter may spring up every few months but at the moment I’m driving a massively gay Vauxhall Corsa diesel, which certainly doesn’t drift, and frankly I’m missing being able to powerslide on my way to work every morning. Missing it a lot.

So I turned my thoughts to alternatives to the S13, which isn’t bad because if I’m honest I really don’t like the S13 that much anyway, it’s simply a means to an end. I know there are millions of beemers out there but all of the BMWs I’ve driven (admittedly this is only two) have been more or less rubbish and slow, and boaty, and just not to my tastes at all.

*ping* went the light bulb in my head. How about a Porsche 944? Lots of power on tap, they’re available in abundance, cost naff all really for a high miler. But there’s a little thought in my head, which is asking why aren’t people using these cars to drift already? Do they break easily? Are cheap ones generally falling apart? Or are they simply not Japanese enough for most people’s tastes?

i would say it is down to price of parts for em mate, you are going to break things, thats a definate, you are then going to have to pay for Porsche parts, which i would amagine are not cheap even second hand.

I had the same thought myself a little while back tbh.

The s13 thing is a means to an end for most i would say as they are cheap as chips, and massivley supported by the tuning industry and parts are (relatively) cheap.

would make a interesting difference to all the s bodies though:thumbs:

Probably cos if something goes wrong you'll pay 'Porsche' prices to get it sorted!

Could be wrong though.

Actually I imagine the insurance and fuel costs would be fairly terrifying too as a daily prospect. A friend had a 928 auto and had it serviced at a Porker stealership. Over £600 for a full service!!

To be honest, I have a feeling that I'll end up just getting another Eunos Roadster. For my budget, it seems around the best prospect for a daily driver/drift car, being more or less indestructable and with plenty of parts support.

you should get a good un for that value, i sold my mint mk1 5, lightweight special with 50k on the clock bbs wheels all the trimmings etc etc for £2995:cry:

will keep a eye out for you..

Hmm, I wouldn;t recommend a 944 for drifty fun.

My brother had one, and he said the mechanical grip was astounding. He could out corner me in my old GT4 CS  (mainly due to 4WD inital iundersteer, but still fecking quick through the bends)

Pkus, parts are hideous expensive, and alot are dealer only :( A brake overhaul ended up costing him £800. It had an oil leak that couldn't be fixed. The PAS system whined and leaked no matter how it overhauled or what you did to it.

As a track/grip car, I'd say go for it, but not as a drifter.

Just mu opinion though

ive had a few shit box porsches, 924's and a 944 turbo the 924s were wank when i got them so they dont count but the 944 t was ok it was nice to drive day to day but as it was a high miler that hadent been that well looked after when driven hard it fell to bits, i did one track day in it and dam near killed it! i think the turbos had 225bhp standard and the 944 had 175bhp and 200ish if you can find a cheep s2 3.0, so not huge amounts of power with the transaxle slung out over the rear end, the handbreak on the right handside cant be too benificial for drift either, fun but expencive to keep running,

you could look around for a ex 924 cup car they might be a bit better for drift?

and dont even concider a 928, very cool but will bankrupt you.

It's RWD so it's all possible

I had one on standard suspension and it was so amazing on the backroads it was unreal. Even with crap tyres it would grip like fuck. Great cars. Fit a hydraulic wand in the middle instead of on the right, get an LSD and just drift it. I find the steering to be a bit vague but I didn't have a look underneath it or change anything the whole time I had it. Most porkers have awesome suspension setup that's fully adjustable so you should be able to play with it some.

Superb video.

So I’m guessing the consensus is that they’re great cars for blatting about in, would probably make reasonably good drift cars, but although the initial purchase price is low, the maintenance costs are horrendous and they’re far from bulletproof.

So as a track day weapon they’re reasonable, but as a daily driver they would be teh suck and give my bank account the hardest raping since I decided that 2k p/a was a reasonable amount to pay to insure a Peugeot 106 Rallye. I’ll strike that one off the list then I think.

Kinda tempted by an FC RX-7 but I think, like the porker, the cost of running one as a daily driver is going to hurt a lot.

I wonder if any car manufacturer is going to cotton on and release a back to basics FR car with a decent tuneable engine that doesn’t cost much to run and is built from reasonably cheap (but not crappy) parts. We can only hope, eh.

Any other thoughts on decent drift cars which are reasonably tidy, don’t cost too much to buy/run/insure, and are going to be up to the task of taking the punishment of me basically thrashing the crap out of it every single day? Oh, and more powerful and practical than an MX-5…

I wouldn't mind an S14, I'd certainly prefer one to an S13, but they obviously have thier own drawbacks. I didn't think that £2500 would get a decent one, I thought that was pretty much bottom of the barrell territory?

as long as it's been regularly serviced and you can see proof of that, you're generally good with an S14. They change hands for all kinds of money, but I would expect to get quite a nice one for £2500 myself with a bit of looking, waiting and if neccessary haggling :p

If I hold out with the diseasal for a couple of months I can easily put together 3k. This seems like the sensible path but what to do in the meantime? Not drift? Not even drive fast? I was making progress late at night recently, and felt like i was really pushing the little Corsa, felt like I was apexing the corners well, taking it to the limits of its grip. I looked at the speedo and I was taking roundabouts at a measly 45mph. That's just not satisfactory.

if I had £2500 in cash I would do but at the moment I've technically got £2000 and a Corsa, so I'm hoping to be in a position to just buy a car outright then sell the Corsa afterwards. And, I dunno, maybe use the cash from the Corsa to buy a PS3 or something.
