Though after nearly 5 years with the same lovely car and nearly completed i felt the urge to get something new and dare to try build something myself. Something Ive been dreaming about. So I sold the old driftcar during december and picked up a new chassi in uk a week later.

The new car is a Lexus is220d. d as in will be drifting. Or d as in diesel, however a very inefficient one. But behold the engine will be changed with the one from the soarer along with gearbox and other necessary items.

Goal is to keep some of the existing electronic equipments like EPS (Electronic assisted power steering). Which will require some can-bus hacking.

So the car is pretty new and have electrically assisted power steering(EPS). I want to keep the old setup. No hydraulics means no oily mess. This means I will have to try hack the communication between the power steering module and the cars ecu to find the codes. To do that I bought a can-bus sniffer kit developed by spark fun.



 
Very interested in this, I've got a Mark X as a daily which uses the same chassis

Interested to see what you use for suspension
 
Thanks and I didn't know that they shared platform nice to hear. I'd like to see a pic to.
My plans for front end suspension is to make my own setup. Shorten knuckle and maybe rebuild the lower arms.

Tried the can-bus shield in my Volvo S60 today. Couldn't pick up any signals from the ecu since the project example I'm using is made for a simulator and don't recognize the codes of the car. Though it's a really nice base to build the software on and I will just have to do some adjustments of the code to get the can bus feed in my monitor.

there's a lot of pro ecu being developed to be supporting the new kind of cars since the old ones can't really control all the parts of a car today. Though it will involve a lot of hacking I think xD.

I tried accessing the Volvo with no luck. It's an older protocol of canbus I think. And I read somewhere that if you want access through the obd then you need to send a signal every 5 seconds to keep the canbus open. So with that in mind I just tried to connect it to my girlfriends vauxhall instead and it worked :)
 
Summer is getting closer every day !
Before the engine can leave the chassi to give room for the 1jz the canbus codes have to be sniffed! A few hour left of work this week and then hopefully a lot of updates this weekend!

I'd draw the line at anthing more than rudimentary soldering and the bare bones of mapping. I'd be finding a fluid powered rack to make fit. Fair shout for having a got mate.
 
Today we successfully connected to the Lexus canbus system. 1337 rpm Eliiite!!!

Actually its not super complicated, and if you own a late car model then the protocol for the canbus is pretty universal which means it will work with the same thing on a lot of cars. But it was nice to prove because now I can continue writing and testing on the daily car and then test it on the Lexus.
Also the 1jz got stripped of its auxiliaries. it needs a little bit more of stripping but it's almost there. I'm stripping it to make the test fit and mockup of the engine mounts.

Hopefully I can start change place of the engines soon.
 
Probably but it will be more complex since the original ecu needs to know that the engine is alive in order to feed the relevant signals to the steering part. As well as speedo etc. I wanna get the codes so I can control it directly from my after market ecu
