The best engine for drifting

hi all from georgia :) i'm interest what engine is best for drifting?
turbo engines or atmospheric???
how much minimum hp should have engine to drift???
and what is the cheapest engin which can learn drifting??


p.s i'm going to swap red top sr20det into e30 in the near future what you think about?? will it normal drift car?? :)

There are plenty of people who drift fine with about 110bhp, any more is just a bonus.
Big capacity N/A is ideal, but turbo is fine if specced well.
Engines are engines, can use whatever.
 
ive seen 1400cc volvos smoke in the dry just depends what level of commitment you have.

how much hp cat take from them without changing inside parts(cams,pistons,and etc)???
 
If money are no object I would like a straight 6 with 9000rpm limiter. It's not what engine is the best, its how much money you would put to have silly high compression, light weight internals, individual throttle bodies and so on and so on....

you ar right :) but i'm interest which engin cat take enough power for drift for little money this's what i mean in "best engine" :)
 
Drifting is a balance between grip, power and weight.
There isn't a "Best" engine and reliability is all down to how well it's maintained.


If your thinking about swapping an SR into an E30 you should probably check out "projectwerx.com" because said modification wont make you drift any better.

That being said,

SR's are pretty bullet proof, as are RB20's - but neither are as reliable as the standard engine in your E30. Neither will make you drift any better either.

For little money considering you have an E30 I'd have to say the BMW 3.5 Straight 6. Very straight forward to throw in an E30 and 220bhp iirc but with a nice bit of torque. Plus their easily cheap to buy when you find one.
In a stripped e30 with a welded diff and half about suspension that would be more than enough to kick off with and probably cost a quarter of the price of an SR conversion (unless your very handy with the fabrication) and an eigth of the hassle.

if you are said that all angine can drive wheel,you can also sad that all rwd car can drift,but the drift cars differ from each other.isn't it???

anything rear wheel drive will drift after a few basic modifications.... I drift a pick up of all things with a Non turbo 2.0 pushing about 115bhp, if I can get that to drift well, anything will!! lol

Dude, the car doesnt make the driver.:no: If you cant drift for shit then no ammount of power will help you.
4 cyl cars will most of the time drive differently to 6 cyl as will rotaries and v8's. its all a learning curve.

to put things into context i went from a nissan s13 with a 4 cyl ca18det and a est 250bhp with some bought apex coilovers to an old ropey toyota celica supra with a 6 cyl n/a 5mge which prob puts out 160 bhp on a good day.

im by no means a serious drift lord one bit, fact im still very much learning but the s13 was soo easy due to the swish suspension, decent tyres and diff. Granted, it had more power, but that didnt make me a better driver, in fact , it made me worse cos i could just mask bad driving skill with just tyre smoke.

learning how to drive a car with less power well is harder but (in my eyes) more rewarding. Hence why theres people with 120 bhp ae86's driving the shit outta them. Ie paz,
suspension / tyre choice / locking diff and stiffening the chassis is definatly the first things you should be concentrating on before worrying about what engines gunna make you look better than you are.
That, seat time, And just just knowing the car...
