The Classic Ford magazine/Chizfab Scandinavian style Capri drift project

Ade B

Classic Ford drifter
My Capri has been with me for about 5 or 6 years now. It's went from being a 30k a year daily driver to more recently a tempremental drifter.....
Probably not the best thing to learn in as I am quite attached to the car, but making a Capri live up to it's sideways reputation is something I've always wanted to do, so may as well give it a go!

It started off as a painfully underpowered 1600 (which lasted a month!) and since then nearly every single component has been replaced or uprated many times... and all on a tight budget.

The current and longest serving engine is.....
Home built 150 BHP 2.0 Pinto....
DIY ported head
RL21 cam (314 degrees duration!)
Fully lightened and balanced bottom end
Lumenition
38 DGAS (hopefully trying to get some sidedraughts though).

Also got a Chizfab welded diff, mondeo/S2 RST brakes, 13x8/13x7 Revos, Coilovers on the front, 2" lowering blocks at the rear, custom stainless exhaust.

This year with the help of Chizfab it's going to be getting more mods to transform it into the Capri that every Capri wants to be.....ie one that can hold proper slides!
This and my progress (and hopefully there will be some!) as a drifter will be documented in articles in Classic Ford magazine...

At one point it managed to be passed of as a fairly bufty car, Fast & Modified feature 2005!

Too much streeto/open diff combo led to far too much of this....

So a welder and plenty trips to Crail is the current state of afairs.

I just need lots more seat time and the car needs it's chassis mods to make everything more composed and predictable.... on the list is....

Axle 5 link kit
Rear coilovers and stiffer front coilover springs
Power Steering/extra lock/faster rack
Adjustable top mounts and TCAs
Hydro Handbrake
Cage
15" rims
Twin 45s or 48s, possibly an engine swap
Some bodywork tartings once I've grown out of crashing
Chizfab & Trampdrift stickers

cool looking car, always wanted one but too young and i live in a dirty area of plymouth so it would be nicked within about 3 minutes of being left unattended like my last ford

love the 1st 2 pic's :smokin::smokin:

good luck with it :D been following it in cf

Quite frustrating being a photographer wanting to document my own drifting.... have to keep handing a camera to whoever is about when I'm out!
Will be a lot more about it in the next issue of CF :D

One of the good things about old Fords though is that you can immobilise them by removing vital parts that make it work fairly easily, lol

heres a quick pic of mine

Looks like a good project, you should start a thread for it...... ;)

I love Capris - my parents had a couple when I was growing up and my Mum has a partially restored 2.8 inj. I'd love to get one and use it for skidding but they command good money these days so not really into the realms of tramp drifting :smash:

I know, a decent boggo 4 cylinder is a grand now, and V6s £2000+ so def not true Trampdrift material. I am constantly tempted to get any one of the countless cars that are cheaper and so much better out the box, but I will persevere with the Capri!

It'll teach me better, it's different & cool, and there's going to be lots of material for me to use in the mag by going down this route.... :D

you sure ade i swear i heard you say rens bm was soo much easier lol :D:D

power steering ftw:D

K

It was SO much easier to get sideways, and to control when sideways..... but required a totally different driving style that I wasn't used to. That's why I ended up going backwards lots when trying to catch a second slide

A bit of a culture shock having a tight chassis and steering that self centres, lol

Another day of spinning out and crashing at Crail, with the occasional very hairy randomly linked up skids now and again.... just to give you an idea of how much hard work the Capri is watch this session from yesterday.....

YouTube - Capri at Crail March 09, Classic Ford magazine's drift car

Who needs a gym? Tiny lock, heavy slow manual steering & no axle location will give you a better workout anyday :D

Also bought wheels from a Capri person today...... his car made me cry, mine used to look like this......

Sure mine will be that minty again one day. First of all need to learn to drift & have Chizfab to make my car not crap....
Next stop crashing, get more power, THEN get tarty :wack:
