LSD for MX5

This whole thread makes me depressed.

Just ask a friend who knows about cars to find you the best possible one within your budget. Christ id do it for a fee.

There is absolutely bugger all that can go wrong with mx5s that cant be fixed for £100. Buying a second hand car from a dealer means almost nothing.

Basically I don't want to buy something and find it blows up after a week and I can't get my money back. If I've had it a few weeks and not found any problems then I'm happy to start modifying it and accept that they won't fix anything after that

MX5s don't break. That's why I buy them. I have never ever 'shopped around' with one, even though I buy cheap as fuck ones, as there's no fucking point. I find one that looks like it's worth buying with a long MOT, get there, and it is, so I buy it.

If an MX5 was to break in a week of getting it, it's the buyers fault for being a absolute fucking retard as they're so basic and bulletproof even the most ham fisted newcomer to cars would be able to tell if a car was a shagger or not.

The abuse I give MX5s in one year is prob more than they've had in a lifetime with most owners, and aside from blowing a diff on a 1.6, I've never once had a problem.

Hmm ok, I wasn't aware they were that reliable and robust that you could literally just buy anything that runs. Went to test drive that 1.8 Sport today, turns out it is a jap import. Is that going to be an issue at all? If I were to buy it do I have to do anything different other than just tell my insurance company (and they probably charge me more for no real reason) ?

I'm sorry haha and as for friends, I feel bad dragging them out miles to look at cars with me yet again (I took them to look at loads of Lotus Elise's with me not long ago). Plus most of them are at work during the week so I couldn't have taken them with me today.

lI think I've found that the mk2.5 "1.8i Sport" models all come with an LSD so I'm going to go look at one of them this afternoon.

I have a Mk2.5 Sport, it has a Torsen 'Super Fuji' LSD. Came with leather seats, (sell them for £300 and buy some bucket seats). Came with 16 inch alloys (sell them for £300 and buy some 15's the same as in Stav's pic - 15 inch Mazda lightweight wheels).

Buy one with coil overs if you can find one with them on. You can pick one up for £1800 on ebay if you keep an eye out. Watch out for ridiculously rusty sills and arches!

I paid £1000 for mine with rusty sills and arches. I have drifted the shit out of it and it still goes, a guy in a Jag crashed into me last Sat and the car still goes!

Top tip, don't buy a mint one for silly money unless you're silly (which I'm kinda getting the feeling you are!)

See my old Mk2 S thread here:

Yeah I guess "more money than sense" is a phrase I'm sure a lot of people use to describe me lol but I say fuck it, its my money, I've earned every penny of it myself so I'll spend it how I want :)

After looking at the mk2.5 MX5 today, I think I'm just not going to be happy with something old and low powered like that after already being spoilt by the E92 M3 I took to a drift day last year. So now I'm thinking about just selling my Elise and my daily driver (Seat Leon Cupra) and buying a BMW M235i, then I can use that as a daily driver and do drift days in it as well. Yes I know its extremely different to what I started out looking at (both in terms of price and handling/power) but I know myself well enough to realise that I won't be happy buying a knackered old MX5, even if it is only to smash up. Call me a snob, but if I can afford to buy something nicer then why not eh? Been meaning to replace my daily driver with something rear wheel drive for a while anyway

You sure? Do you realise the massive amount of mods/changes they had to do to them to even do the crappy drifting (and that was some of the best drifters in the world) on that recent BMW advert with them?

Can't remember totally, but I remember welded diffs and lots of electronic chopping to stop it ruining the fun, was more than just pulling a fuse.

Really? I know as standard they only have an open diff but a couple of months ago they brought out an LSD option for them. Maybe the advert was made before that? Surely with traction control off and an LSD there isn't much that can ruin it? I've seen plenty of video reviews where they've had them sideways. I'm sure its not a pro drift car no, but for what I want which is occasional drift day fun, I would have thought it must be ok?
Do you have a link to any articles/videos explaining what they changed on them to do that drift advert? I can't seem to find anything

Also a drift tutorial uses them so I would assume they're fairly adequate in standard form:

Stavros I'm guessing this is the video you were talking about?

One of the comments says "The BMW LSD option was not ready in time for when these cars were built. Instead the diffs were welded for this shoot."

From what I remember reading (from the people involved, not the 'official' word) there was big issues, more than just needing to weld the diffs.

I dunno, to me, esp as you say yourself you're not clued up at all, I'd be buying a car that's deffo suitable, rather than one likely to need work to become driftable.

Yeah and I completely agree with you, I want something that is definitely suitable but having seen lots of videos of real people drifting them (not just the adverts) including that Chris Harris drift tutorial where he uses this exact car, I can't see how they're not suitable. I'd love to find the article you read that explains the problems they had but I can't find any mention of it anywhere

It wasn't an article, it was the people involved directly talking about it 'privately'.

BTW, Chris Harris doing a few skids around a single corner on a video don't make it a good drift car. He didn't transition once, he didn't do anything really.

It might be, it might not be, but unless you're either seriously committed to sorting one out in to a proper drift car, OR you don't really give a fuck, wanna do a few little skids like in that video then forget all about it, you'd have to be mental starting with such an unknown quantity IMO.

Yeah fair point but I've seen him do plenty of drifting before so assumed he at least has some idea what he's on about (more than me anyway). Besides the point now anyway as I couldn't find any M235is for sale anywhere near me that I could actually get within the next few weeks... so I went and bought an E92 M3 today :) I'm going to use as my daily driver and also do the occasional drift day in it n just hope I don't wreck it too much. Picking it up on Wednesday and will take that to Oulton Park on the 10th. Problem solved :)

your going to learn to drift in a e92 m3?

i call troll!

no one can be that stupid surely?

you do realise you will hit stuff learning to drift? it will put large dents and smash parts of your very expensive car. Other peope might well hit you as well, they might be in £100 bmws and you wont be able to claim a penny back. You do realise the people in that video are probably profesional stunt drivers, and have being doing it for years. Theyre not just jumping in a car the first time and having a go.

They also have huge open runways usually. Drift tracks have walls, tyres, fences and all sorts of things to hit. Not huge open bits of space.

why not ask some actual people that drift, i.e us and listen to their advice. You seem to be picking a car because you saw a video of someone doing a weak slide in it and now think it would make an awesome drift car.

Your a cock that's all I can come up with. People have given you suggestions / direction / help and your just not listening.

Yes you've got more money than sense and it makes you come across like a dick

Seems to me every post/thread seems to be a thinly veiled 'look how well off I am' as not a jot of advice has been listened to.
