Mx5 Bolt On Turbo

Skid Bitch SKID!!!
Hwya guys.....been doing my fair share of searching but i cant find a bolt on turbo kit from anywhere.....

Just a couple of questions...

1) Do i have to lower the compression for the turbo......

2) How much am i looking at for the kit......

3) where do i get the kit from......

and

4) Will the insurance be ridiculus if i told them i want to bolt a turbo to her.........



If someone could shed some light on this that would be amazing! :D

Pretty sure you can swap over the turbo setup from the 1.6 Mazda 323 Turbo. Same engine I think, just with all the turbo gubbins.

the engines in the mk1 are as iv been told the same unit as the 323 4x4 turbo. they have under piston oil squirters which iv been told is ideal for forced induction.

to give you a idea when i was looking at turboing my mx5 it came in at just over £1k for home brew kit, i was looking at the following, iv prob forgot a few things but

ebay t3/4 manifold, strenghthened
escort rs tubo unit
HKS SSQV dump valve
LC-01 wide band o2 sensor
330cc supra injectors
Magacor 8.5mm HT leads
pikey spec straight through exhaust
de-cat pipe
K&N 57i air filter
Front mounted intercooler
mega squirt/emanage blue/link what ever suits your budget

should knock out 180bhp+ at around 6psi
 
My mrs has a hks conversion, its a topmount turbo atm its only running 5psi and has been for the last 5 years with no problems, lol on a std engine,

As far as im aware the std engine is the same as the 323 turbo. i also heard from other ppl running turbo setups that the std engine can handle 250bhp - thats what i been told.

hae a look on mx5nutz forum as theres a few guys on there running turbo/supercharged 5's

another thing i learnt is if its a 1.6 theres 2 engine types. one that has 4 slots in the crank pulley damper and one has 8 slots. the 8 slotted pulley engine is the one to have as it has a stronger crank, the 4 slot ones are notorious for having weak cranks apparently, hope this helps

dunno mate, I think she bought it like it, (had it when i met her)

I think it was a complete kit, it has a piggy back ecu on it thats pre mapped and cant be re mapped.

The oil feed is taken off from the oil pressure switch and it has a new dipstick tube with the oil return incorporated into it, it looks like a shit design if you ask me, id prefer to have a separate return welded onto the sump. IMO

the manifold is a cast iron one, that has cracked now but been welded up

Do bolt on kits but dont expect them to be cheap unless you buy from them 2nd hand.

Skipp123 has given you a great breakdown on what parts/injectors you can run.

Even if you build your own kit which can be done roughly about £500/600 that probably wont include your ECU that you will need then there's the mapping so expect another £500 for mapping and £300 for Megasquirt , then there's also wiring it up which costs.

Things like a couple sets of spark plugs for the tuning ,during and after.

having already played about with turbo'ing a non turbo production car I realised it costs alot more than I thought.

Also as Sturge says dont bother messing around the dipstick for a return just weld a return feed into your sump and run a line down to it much easier cost me £30.00 to do last time I took it to a welder.

No need to lower compression unless your running INSANE amounts of boost but its between 6-10 psi on a stock engine (exc Injectors etc)

Im going down the SC route and have picked up

Megasquirt1 V3
76 PIN ECU PLUG (Fits Mazda mx5 ECU harness)
Supercharger Mounts to fit Eaton M45 (BMW Mini Supercharger)
BOV (from previous Build)
Extra Throttle Body
Throttle Body mouting kit
Pulley Kit
Bypass Valve (M45)

Its still a long way off but thats cost roughly £400 ish which in my eyes is pretty good Im trying to keep the whole build including mapping under £800 quid which at the moment looks very promising as I already have a mate who has quoted me for the mapping.

But as a tip get on the MX5 forums there's loads;

I use these as its got the US forum which is great for seeing what people are doing to there's and the tuning parts available.

I use MX5 Nutz to see whats happening in our UK mx5 scene which was my decideing factor to go SC instead of turbo again.

Cheers buddy....i might be able to help you out on that eaton m45 dilema.....I know a few techys that work for BMW and ive been told by a few of them that when someone buys a normal bmw mini cooper and want the works package fitted....the Eatons get litrally 'chucked away'

I was gunna eaton my old Polo GT with the G40 bottom end.....

I can propbly get you one for about £100!!!! BRAND NEW!!!!!
 
Ask your insurance what it will go upto before you buy anything. IIRC you couldn't afford insurance on a 328, so insuring a turbo MX5 is out of your budget also. Dont even think about not telling your insurance of any Mods, it will invalidate your insurance and you will be done for driving with no insurance. Which is a minimum 6 points, and will rape you for the next 5 years on insurance.
 
oh yeh....everything will be done cosure.....im not one of them dodgy types that insure 1.3 starlets as a n/a 1.3 corrolla lol

Do you think the insurance will sky rocket??
 
Turbo: I bought a Greddy kit secondhand for £500. The turbo has been fitted to my MX5 for about three years now, with standard engine internals and no problems. As I only run 6psi of boost I didn't need to remap and just retarded the ignition and put an AFPR on to look after fueling. I guess I have around 155bhp, which is enough to drift most places.

Insurance: Adding the turbo made almost no difference at all to my insurance, but I had already declared the welded diff, cage, coil-overs, carbon body panels and a load of other stuff.
 
Im 19 tho.....it would probly make a huge difference to my insurance wouldnt it?

Get quotes from your insurance company - no one on DriftWorks can tell you what your insurance will be.

If it'll cost you a load of money then don't do it. You don't need a turbo to drift an MX5.
 
i find a modified car is cheaper for me to insure at the min than a std version of the same car! not always been like that tho, (i just turned 22 too)
