Mx5 Bolt On Turbo

Cooool....well i know you dont need a modified mx5 to drift....mines great fun atm....but i just want a little more speed...and tbf...Turbo'in it seems like the best alternative.....and im also a little curious about how much the kits are.....There about £800 on Flea-gay..

but is it cheaper to buy the downpipe and manifold and buy a second hand turbo...drillin a hole in the sump and going for it that way rather than a cheap shitty 'break the first time you hit boost' kit??

Id rather spend that £800 on a proper DECENT second hand kit that will last than a kit offa ebay that'l last 3 months.....

i rekon it wouldnt be that hard to turbo it.. its the management side that would get expensive... unless you pikey it and have rising rate fpr and voltage clamp on the afm.... which i have (long story), but would rather not use....

Well keep me informed Taxi would snap your arm off for that price and saves me going on fleabay lol.

as someone else said management is key to all this, I picked up everything to fit the megasquirt in for under £200 and its now plug and play and I can swap back to the oem ecu at any time.

when I declared my turbo/engine swap the increase wasnt anything too dramatic although I was 22 at the time so might be a little more for you.

3 years reliable use on my turbo, including two seasons of BDC and loads of road miles. All on an AFPR and some retard (I'm refering to the ignition timing, not the driver, although...).

So the pikey way can work just fine. It's not rocket science.

mate sign up to a propa mx5 forum theres so much help they can give you on there loadsa people have turbo'd ones on the forum.
as for the ebay china chargers they call it are no use theyre a bag of wank so dont go near that.
look on flyin'miata and their turbo kits

It is alot of money.....so these things are just a simple bolt on and go or....???

most are just a bolt on application, but do it properly get the right set ups, injectors, manifold, cooling, wideband, intercooler, downpipe etc etc, alot of work goes into to it without frying your engine

if i were to do this i would personaly get the china turbo deal the billy basic one, and replace the turbo when it shits its self the miata turbo boys seem to not mind the china turbos too much. from what i have researched your better off going to bell engineering just for there manifolds/downpipes/exhausts as the manifolds very very rarely crack unlike most other manifolds or the turbo conversions and the downpipes and exhausts are ment to be a really good fit.

then from there i would home brew the rest
injectors from a 1.8 if not going to mental figs
afpr
something to control fuel
something to control boost
egay intercooler full kit from universal intercoolers is under £200 clamps/hoses incl

so breifly,,,, if i were to turbo a mx5 i would go with
this kit BEGI Shanghai-S Turbo System 1990-1993 BEGi

then the above bits to get the power up

or you could go with a greedy kit GREDDY | Mazda MX5 Turbo Kit Conversion GReddy from the uk and add bits to power up, 2nd hand greedy kits go for between £400-650

hope that may help you a little

lifted from miata turbo, as i can guess the next question lol, this is not my opinion as not looked into 200rwhp only looked at 200bhp fly

all a greddy kit needs to hit 200rwph is:

a new downpipe
a intercooler setup
removal of the FMU with a EMS unit
440-550cc injectors
2.5-3" exhuast
12psi

Taxi...
What year is your 5? the reason I ask is in the Mk1 there were 2 incarnations of the 1.6
the earlyer ones came out with 115bhp untill the released the 1.8 (think it was 1997?) when the de tuned the 1.6 to 90bhp giving the 120 bhp (could have been a little more... 125?) 1.8 a performance advantage!

So if you have an early one you will already be 25bhp up! also another option to look at is supercharging the 1.6 instead. the reason I say to look at this is because superchargers give more low & mid range torque meaning you won't have to rev the nuts off the engine as much, and with the way a super charger comes in smoothly the result is less stress on the drive train as you don't get a suddern surge of boost like with a turbo.

There are also some other advantages:
1: the awesome supercharger wine
2: they are fairly cheep to set up (Mini Cooper S: 1.6 engine supercharged 200 bhp)
3: 2nd hand ones on ebay: £160 ish

bad points:
A fair bit of fab work to get it fitted & working, but again, there are aftermarket bolt on kits for the 5 available ;)

Not sure matey, but I have seen a few supercharged ones at shows..... but I can't see it being to big a job to mount a Cooper S blower on the side of the 1.6 lump!
