I'm gonna try keep this short and sweet but we all know that probably won't happen...
Friday - Practice
BDC - We headed down on the Friday morning and arrived about 1pm - got setup and headed for Drivers Briefing
Got out on track and had a good few hours practice - although not many laps due the way it the layout was you double backed so you couldn't send the cars with a 20 second gap unfortunately. Plus it was dry so it was nice and fast!
Got comfortable with the walls a few times
Then packed up and called it a day - went and met David and Katy for some tea and sleep!(Shout to David for letting us stay in his apartment for the weekend!)
Saturday - Pro-am
Woke up Saturday morning to rain - great... Wasn't looking forward to it much as my wipers currently didn't work - easy fix but wasn't able to fix at the track - so out came the Rain-x! Whilst I was in the briefing, David and Owen made up a little block of aluminium to stop my Hydro being pushed too far when I use my footbrake - This was a genius idea and worked amazingly! Top lads!
Straight into practice. Rain-X worked like a dream!
In the wet, the track is so sketchy, as you entered it was like ice, and then literally 50yards after you've entered it was really grippy! You had to be so careful with throttle/steering.
Qualifying came round and I managed a measly 57.33 on my first run and an even lower 52 on my second run, but it was a score on the board which some drivers didn't even manage to do!
I ended up qualifying in 19th place! This meant that I had gained my BDC License! I was so so happy!! Could not believe it, I came into this year thinking I would just use it to get my eye in and see what it's like, and now somehow I'm a BDC Pro-am driver!!
Anyway, after celebrating, my first battle was against Danny McGuire in his 600hp RB R34... Instantly pooing myself I warmed up and lined up - Lead run went well, although all I could hear with my passenger window down was his wastegate going mental behind me...Sounded like he was close
Chase run wasn't really anything to write home about, but Danny straightened infront of me when leading and also his line was off a few clips! None the less great driving. I took the win though! Mega happy! First ever BDC Event and I'm through to the Top 16 of the Pro-am BDC!
Next I was up against Ian Rutherford in his 450hp Supercharged V8 S13, Coming off a podium from the last round he was on fire! On his lead run I tried to stay close but he left me off the line, then as we got near to Clip 3, Ian spun!!
Going back around I knew I just had to put down a clean lead and I would win, and I tried my best but Ian was all over me..
But his chase run wasn't enough to make up for his spin on his lead run, I came away with the win!
Great 8 now and I was against Dominic Gates in a borrowed R34, again another drifter I have seen do really well recently so another daunting battle! Chasing first, and again I had no pace to keep up! No matter what I did I was just left for dust. Dominic put down a solid lead run!
Swapped around and Dominic's turn to chase! He was close but approaching Clip 3 he straightened behind me giving me a huge advantage and letting me through to the Top 4!!!
Getting this far in my first ever competitive round of the British Drift Championship was absolutely mind blowing! I couldn't believe it. I mean I think I only won most of the battles due to how slow my bloody car is lol...
My Top 4 battle was against Josh King in his 650hp E36, His car was FAST! Chasing first again, I actually kept up pretty well to my surprise!! The closest I had been all day!(I must have got a huge jump on him at the start line lol)
Then we switched round and he chased me. What a driver! He was all over my door and even left me a nice tyre mark on my wing/broke my indicator :@
He took the win and advanced on into the final! Well deserved!
My final battle was for 3rd/4th Place against the Scotman, William Hanna in his 550hp R33 - he is an all or nothing sort of guy and definately shows in his driving!
Chasing again it was another fast car! Although I managed to keep up a bit better and it was a really fun battle!
Swapped it round and I had no room for error, I put down a good lead line but all I could hear throughout the run was Willi's Wastegate going mental! I knew he was close!
Willi took the win, but I wasn't really bothered, I had shocked myself and pretty much everybody else watching me, it was insane!!
Getting to the Top 4 meant I was able to join the Pro's the next day, which after some discussion with Amy, we decided to do it for the crack, we both knew I had no chance but thought fuck it, might aswell whilst I can lol.
Sunday - Pro!!
Next day after staying at David's apartment again(thanks!) got the car ready and went out for some more practice - this time with the Pro's! NEVER thought I'd see this day!
It was another rainy day and I was grateful for ANY result at all - to stay in the Pro class you have to finish in the Top 4 that day - NO CHANCE
Qualifying came round pretty quickly... My second run was pretty intense! I thought this is my last chance to put on a show, so I did a nice flick entry and skimmed the wall with my bash bar perfectly! Apologies for the quality but I stole this from the livestream
This run scored me an 80.3 and I ended up qualifying 5th overall in the Pro Class against some of the best UK Drifters that I have looked upto for years including the likes of Phil Morrison and Oliver Evans etc!! How did I manage that in a basic street spec S13 that me and Amy built on our drive?? Unbelievable!!
After this, The Top 24 qualifiers had a Track Walk, so we all parked up on track and then all the spectators could come down and have a look at the cars etc - very odd experience but It was nice that alot of people came and spoke to me and asked about the car etc - alot were shocked that it was still on the standard turbo lol
Due to qualifying in the Top 8, I got a by run into the Top 16! I was gob-smacked but happy lol, actually had time to chill and watch a few battles.
My Top 16 battle was against Tom Murphy in a borrowed 400hp JZ PS13 - Due to qualifying higher I was leading first this time! I put down a decent lead line but Tom straightened behind me giving me the advantage
Chase run and I was surpised that I kept up with him on the straight and on initiation I was all over him!
Then we got to Clip 3 and I honestly have no idea what happened, but I managed to straighten up and drive straight into his passenger door! This pushed him off track giving him the advantage. Luckily there was no damage to either car(apart from a damaged ego on my part and the bent outer skin of his door). This was the end of my weekend.
I wasn't gutted at all, I only came here to qualify on the Saturday and gain my license for next year, but I had accomplished way more than I could of ever dreamed of!
Thanks
I know mention it alot, but I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for Amy. She is such an amazing woman, always supporting me and keeping my head in the game whilst also being the best spotter I could ask for! She's direct but also very good at giving tips on how to improve quickly! I couldn't ask for anything more from her, she is great!
Also all the support I get from my sponsor Kenda, they are great! They air-shipped 4 tyres straight to me within a week from Taiwan just for BDC! And I now have my supply for the rest of this year going into next year! I can't wait to see how much more grip I can get from the Kenda's!!
AB Auto-Works have been a great team that have helped me throughout the latter half of the year! Always happy to help and generally great guys that also drift themselves! If you're in the West Yorkshire area then give them a shout, they know what they're talking about!
Driven Racing Oil's for keeping my engine and drivetrain running silky smooth with no issues!
and all of my friends and family! The amount of support I had at BDC was amazing, so many people messaging me, my phone was going mental!
PS - Did somebody say BDC Round 5 @ Three Sisters? :O
